- A "by request" follow up to "Troubleshooting a Stuck Singer 66". In this episode, we disassemble the linkages for the oscillating hook. I also show you how to deal with older model 66's that don't have timing marks and gauges on the needle bar bushing. The machine we use as an example is a Red Eye 66 from 1917!

Bob, thank you. Your step by step tag-along-with-me video gave me the confidence to tackle a restoration on a 1912 66-1 treadle. I’m not done yet, and sometimes locating “the right tool for the job” takes a few days (because this gal has never done anything like this before) but there is a deep satisfaction in saving something that was made to last forever.

I have that exact ratchet screwdriver but in canada it was sold at canadian tire , it was expensive but worth every penny , just got my 66 from 1919 and your helping me rebuild it , thank you very much Bob , your doing great work showing us these procedures.....and most of all thank you for doing it for free , everyone wants to be paid for thier knowledge , but your like me , love to help people , no better pay then appreciation 👍👍👍👍👍 thank you
Recently got one late german 66 (very rare in my region. They are all pre WWI export only with luxury cabinets or WWII trophies) but with old upper tension disks (which is very good because I don't like tensioner with numbers dial).
Thanks Bob. Watched this this morning, and glad I did! I would have missed the felt wiper on the bobbin lift! Refurbished a 1960s 66 that was rusted solid, spent all day cleaning and oiling, wire wheel and buffing pads! It was a boat anchor, now a sewing machine, thanks in part to your videos. I did have to go online and get help with reassembling the top tensioner! The main shoulder bolt that runs the hook was frozen. Heat and a small hammer w a block of wood! Broke the spool pin, had to re tap and rethread. It had a broken foot lever I welded a bit of metal on to it and refashioned (sanded and shaped) it, polished and reinstalled! I plan on painting it OD green, and giving it an army motif, as the paint is too gone! Then I have 6 more to work on!
Thank you so much for posting this video, Bob. My husband just rescued an amputated 66 treadle and this poor old lady has been so unloved that she was completely locked up and is so dirty. I've had her in her spa tub soaking in oil for a week and am now barely able to get her apart. I am now needing to disassemble all these parts and been trying to figure out how. I guess with all my searching, UA-cam realized I desperately needed to watch your video. 🤔🙄😉😁🤣🤣🤣🥰😍

Thank you for this video and for the tool supply list on your website. I've picked up a Singer Red Eye on ebay and found after loading it into my treadle base that the timing is off and top thread not catching. Your clear tutorial is helping me disassemble and correct the timing, but I need to make sure I have the proper tools first! Thanks a bunch!
Thanks so much for taking the time to make these videos. I wouldn't have attempted to remove parts, clean, and replace them without your help. I know the machine still sews if I don't go to all the effort but it sure looks good afterwards.

@@BobFowlerWorkshop Have you ever removed the needle bar hole plug on a 66? I'd really like to clean and shine it up but I only found one mention of it when I searched.
@@darlenemcclenny3909 Yes! There are a couple of ways to remove it, the easiest (and best IMO) is do drive it out (downward) with an appropriate sized wooden dowel. I seem to recall it's something like 5/16" or 3/8", but I don't have one handy at the moment...

This was so good i was have a bad problem where myne was not hooking the thread and pulling it over the bop and couldn't fioger it out and this video helped me fix it and its sewing again thanks you so much you earned a sub =]

Here we go again! I set my timing yesterday, and it was fine. Im trying to reset it, the hook wont stay in place - no matter how much I tighten the set screw.

Than you Bob for a great video and info, much appreciated. Unfortunately, for me, I didn't get to look at this before I started my restoration of a 66k machine. I have taken it apart, as your video shows, but didn't set the timing before removing the needle and hook assembly. So now I have to figure out how to re-set the timing so it all works. Any help would be great. Thanks.

How can you mess up the timing when there is literally marks you just line up.....
The back end of the hook was about a 16th of an inch beyond all of the hook

Out of curiosity, why are you removing the main shaft? They generally don't need to come out...
Is it possible to completely remove the shuttle in this type of machine? I recently purchased one just like this (1920 lotus 66) and it hasn’t been cleaned in decades.

just got me an old 66 1915 timing was off, this video helped, by the way the right side of the pitman arm the screw is missing, do you know where i can get one? looks like the previous owner might have tried to time it.... thanks bob

Hello. I appreciate the video!! I have a question about the feed dog. I tried to do timing and set hook. But I don’t seem to have done it correctly. The feed dogs don’t pull the material / paper towel I have placed under the presser foot when moving the balance wheel. Not sure if the feed dogs need to be done a certain way? Thanks in advance
The place to start looking is the feed dog height. You'll need to have the needle plate installed on the machine to do this correctly, but take the needle off to prevent stabbing yourself (ask me how I know). Loosen the screw that holds the feed dog in place just enough so you can slide the feed dog up and down. Turn the handwheel so that the feed dogs are up and at the mid point of their travel from front to back. Now you can slide the feed dogs up on the screw until approximately 80% of the height of the teeth are above the needle plate, then tighten the screw. That should take care of the problem. Hope this helps.

Removing the bobbin carrier, ive heard even touching the screw to take it out can damage the machine. Is that only true of the newer models you dont have to remove it, or is there something to break if I mess something up. I don't get why people are freaking out over that screw you remove without a second thought.
Just did it, removed the bobbin carrier and feed dogs, cleaned out so much shmoo. It was really gross. Found the machine in a dumpster 6 months ago thankfully not seized and been trying to find videos how to do maintainance. Thank you so much. These videos are the most in depth I have found anywhere.
Yeah, I don't know why all the fuss about "the screw". There are quite a few "never do that" things you'll see on forums and Facebook that are just plain ridiculous. Sure, some things will require a bit more knowledge to put right if you mess with them, but that's part of the learning process (hook timing and thread clearance come to mind).
Is this the same for the 201K?
No, the 201 series are a rotary hook, whereas the 66 is an oscillating hook. I plan on a 201 hook area tear down video soon.
Oh ok, I already pulled a lot of it apart today, but that video mught come in handy when I put her back together. My horizontal hook drive shft wont move and my needle bar won't move, I've got movement in every other part now. I'll have to figure out how to get them unstuck or ill have to use the hammer method, oh no.
