I heard this song last year live in Hamburg and he played it right. And as somebody said, if you listen to it very closely, you can actually hear the double bass right...pro shot is just enhanced. Also I think there is problem with compression on his kick, because I saw him use left leg and it didnt make sound sometimes...like his trigger setting was weak.
No, there shouldn’t been any addition of instrument or vocals in the post processing of a live video. This is exactly why with live videos during the 80’s each song was the best version from a whole 6 or 12 month tour.
Sorry to destroy your illusion but overdubbing was totally a thing back then... even the Beatles did that on live albums and even recorded full tracks afterwards which then were mixed with ambient noise from concerts. The Doors declared on their 1970 live album "Absolutely Live" (lol!) that they AREN'T using overdubs because it was already industry standard.
These guys got to rest and recupe during Covid. Lars may have decided to hone his drumming. Saw an interview where he describes his current diet that is ultra healthy. No more Lars getting smashed all the time.
I think this is a problem with how media is consumed these days. You were lucky to get a live VHS/DVD of your favourite band back in the day, now its every other day or week were there will be live footage released. As someone has already mentioned, the best takes would be compiled from the whole tour and then cut with pro shot footage from 2 performances. Everyone is a critic too these days and a certain level of perfection has been made to be expected (which i wholeheartedly dislike!) Everything has to be on the grid otherwise its ''Rubbish''...Ultimatley the over processing takes the energy and vibe away Excellent video man, and completely agree! \m/
I'm fine with it tbh. Saw them in August 2023 and Leper sounded amazing live. Sounds amazing in the UA-cam videos as well even if they are doctored up a bit
Ya, I'll be the 1st to know when the Dr up a vid from Foxborough, Mass. I was listening and watching. I've never heard him pull off a perfect double bass pattern. Not hating on him, just saying.
Metallica have been in a maintenance program for many years now. Modern tech will keep them going for some years to come, even more if they go down the avatar route like KISS.
I'm absolutely aware there's no rock/pop act these days who don't "polish" in post. The word "fake" is not correct since he still plays the part, but he starts with an accented first note, or he flams it. Kicks are not even and the downbeat is accented. Post they use kick sample and quantize every bar. The same is done in the studio. Is it good or bad? It goes both ways. From business perspective I'd say that's the better way to represent artists image among fans. My personal (non business) oppinion - no, I'd preffer to represent myself for who I am, that's why I record my covers as stereo track, no postproduction, so everyone who hires me knows exactly what he is paying for. But in the end I'm just nobody, so my concept is wrong ;)
Good call! It‘s a spicy topic that can be discussed until the end of mankind. They use triggers/samples heavily also live these days but they crank it up a notch in post in comparison to live. Yes you're right, as a professional drummer myself, I use to play for Byzantine, and we did many polyrhythms in our songs. And even with me they were NEVER perfect, and the drummer who took my place in the band. Used lots of post processing to make it more precise. I don't like doing that, personally.

I do, too. But I've seen Metallica live like 9 times in the last 5 years. Some nights he is more on than others, but as a fellow musician of well over thirty years, I've been pretty impressed with their performances. Yes, they clean up in post, but they are not terrible live. They may not be as tight as they once were but they still have plenty of magic moments throughout their live show. They are not peak, but on their worst night they are still better than most. They still play/sing every bar for 2 hours. Most major modern acts don't even try.
