The directors branch doesn't like commercial films. They snubbed Denis Villaneuve. So it makes sense to snubb Gerwig.
I suppose that makes sense. They do seem to be a bit stingy when it comes to handing out noms for films that performed super well at the box office (Nolan noneithstanding). Just look at James Cameron and Joe Kosinski last year! - Tanner
@@backlotbanter Yep, Dune, Avatar 2, Top Gun, Black Panther, all the way back to Inception. there's a pretty glaring trend of commercial films getting best picture but missing best director. I think its because the director's branch of the academy is very international, now more than ever. That's why you've seen people like Triet, Glazer, Ostlund, Hamaguchi, Vinterberg, Joon-Ho, Pawlikowski, all get nominated in the past 6 years. And the international film community, specifically the directors, aren't as receptive to commercial films.
Annette Bening gave a better performance in Nyad than Margot Robbie in Barbie.

I don't understand the America Ferrera nomination? How could they overlook Sandra Huller ,Julianne Moore and Rosamund Pike ? And if the Academy wanted to nominate a comedic performance why not Rachel McAdams? The Academy misses again!
Sadly Rachel’s performance didn’t seem to materialize at any awards bodies except for some local Critcs groups. Small movie releases early in the year will do that, I suppose… - Tanner

Where did the NYAD noms come from? Their decision to nominate anything Maestro seems like a self-parody. I'm really disappointed about the omissions of Charles Melton and Zac Efron. However, I'm pleased that Christopher Nolan is receiving recognition.
Totally agree with all of that! Nolan is just gonna steamroll to the end of the season, so plenty of recognition for him and the entire Oppenheimer team. - Tanner
