I am a practicing Buddhist Christian. I find the two to be very complementary but also enhancing in my relationship with God and God's body. I have gained wonderful new insights into the Kingdom of God through meditation. The Buddhist concepts of No-self, impermanence, and interconnectedness have provided great liberation for me as I walk with God. Jesus's teachings have become enlighted as I read them in a new lens of my practice. The dualities that plagued my faith most of my life no longer imprison me. Christianity made me want to be a better person, but as the Apostle Paul says- What I want to do I don't do and what I end up doing is not what I want to do. Practicing Buddhism has facilitated a greater ability to be congruent and given me a path of "how" to follow Christ, not just a desire. I would have probably walked away from my Christian faith had I not found Buddhism.

buddhism has helped me, and i love christ. yet some of their teachings haven't easily connected for me. some christians say "god is 'everywhere' ". buddhists say "wisdom/love/the dharma (god) 'is' everything ". it's only recently that i may be getting a sense of their connection, the two perspectives. thing is, i likely new age perspectives, the "even greater works" christ is quoted as speaking of.

@@holarc I fled from Christianity to embrace Buddhism, and even became a Buddhist monk in a Tibetan Tradition for 12 years. Amazingly, I found that the more I practiced and studied Dharma, especially teachings on emptiness and the non-dual mind and the heart of compassion, the more I was drawn back to Jesus! I recognized Jesus as the perfect "Buddhist", and eventually realized that the wisdom and compassion i was working to develop in meditation were mine for the asking just by allowing His presence to dwell within me. I have not gone back to church, but I have a much richer relationship with Jesus now.
As many have said here in the comments, once you begin to learn how to step out of the non-dual mind, the better you understand the teachings.
Christianity IS and always will be a relationship and NOT a set of doctrines!
I understand your struggle with trying to bring together the western and eastern teachings. Just remember that God is bigger than any explanation about Him, and is outside of the non-dual mind. He contains many paradoxes that look like contradictions to us, including the paradox of transcending the universe while being immanent within it at the same time!
God dwells in time with us, while living outside of time.
Let love be your guide. Buddhism taught me Wisdom and Compassion, and both of these minds are one in Christ.

Coming from a many generations Christian family of both sides. Studied, pracriced, believed with all my strength dedication and zeal. Preached on the streets, in church, in bible collage as a dean. Just so you may understand who is speaking here. I have always considered all other religions as filthy demonic disease and the works of satan and not to be looked or touched. After 20 years in ministry things that accumulated in me started to crack my shell. Biblical contradictions, hypocrisy, immorality, division, lack of love, wretched personalities and lives, collapsing marriages and a list goes on. The church is a mess and disgrace in the light if Jesus. It took Papa a few years to deconstruct the mess of doctrines and dogmas taught be man made religion. About two months ago I was strong and brave enough to be led to look into those other "evil" works of the devil. Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism and to my shock and awe I find my beloved Daddy God, my loving Papa in them in all only in a different form and cultural setting and language. This is glorious and so much how I always knew Him deep inside but the prison walls of dogmas forced me to ignore. I also agree that Buddhism or Taoism is actually more advanced and scientific than Christianity. Simply because they remained focused on the majors and kept developing them. They even have a system for body health incorporated into spiritual principles like quigong, taichi, meditation or joga. Me, the once Christian superior warrior now feeling humbled and realised that I was the one deceived by an evil religion. Not Jesus but religion that followed after. Christianity must reset itself of will be no more as it's seen already. God is love and love has no retribution, punishment, torment, as a false god of modern day's organised Christianity has. Yes its good news to All mankind indeed.

The issue that I take with modern Christianity is that it invokes separation - in this case, Buddhism and Christianity - where it isn't called for. Modern Christianity also teaches nothing about the mind and how to properly manage it - and that the mind is ultimately not who you are. Buddha taught all of these things and with uncanny precision, as Fr. Rohr alludes to.

    • @talkandedit8714
      @talkandedit8714 2 роки тому +1

The sad thing is, Christianity did teach at one point about the mind and how to properly manage it including how to approach Reality, at least when it was still young and before it became heavily institutionalized.
Aside from Judaism, Stoicism was a heavy influence and it's like the western equivalent to Taoism/Budhism. You'd think it might be heresy since the early stoics technically sorta have a God they call "Logos" (but not really a God, more like a higher force of being that emanates across the universe, mostly translating to Reason, Order and Logic) but Saint John, literally Jesus's Favorite apostle used that exact stoic concept to describe Him which by the way, I think should get him into a lot of trouble if we are really being that strict with not using outside sources.
Just really think about it, you'd think academic Christians would be against studying philosophers like Plato and Marcus Aurelius' because they are pagans who never knew Jesus and yet we literally have Saints like Saint Augustine of Hippo and Saint Thomas Aquinas borrowing from them or at the very least using their theory and concepts to explain Christian concepts (and that's not even mentioning the Academic Institutions that the church built). If anything, most Christians in their early days up including the council of Nicaea were a lot more practical and scientific than what a lot of people today realize.
Then for some reason and I don't know why, probably because they got big, they started obsessing over the details and the text of the doctrine. Today we have a mixture of toxic hippie feel good nonsense and dogmatic conservatism, it's a mess. I almost completely lost faith if I had not used the lenses of different philosophies and religions to understand what the heck I was even practicing.

I understand what Father Richard Rohr is saying from my own experiences and understanding of Buddhism. I learned Buddhist Philosophy in the University and have went to a Vipassana meditation. I also learned the wisdom of Buddha from the writings of the Poli Canon.
Yea, I don't get into the Metaphysics or Epistemology of Buddhism. Buddha did not required that nor did he answered those type of questions when he was asked. You are right about that, Father Rohr. I don't know much about Buddhism as a religion and have no interest. The Philosophy and Practice does make me a better Christian. This is true.
I have observed what Father Rohr have said about some Christians arguing and debating each other for decades. I have noticed Christians who practice Buddhism are more loving and more compassionate as Jesus asked us to be. I can see how important it is to be compassionate towards the people God ask us to help: widows, poor, homeless, orphans, sick, afflicted, etc....

Pray for discernment. Buddhism is false because it fails to recognize the true nature of God and the fallen nature of man. Only by uniting ourselves to the redemption of man accomplished by Christ's sacrifice on the cross will we be "enlightened." This is the exact reason Christ gave us the Mass, the only form of worship God desires. It connects us to that redemption spiritually and physically. Buddha's eightfold path won't even come close. We must be focused on God and not ourselves. That's the deception we must avoid. Best wishes.

If Jesus is who He said He is then Christianity isn't a religion, it's just the truth. A huge difference in the 2 belief systems is that Sidartha Gautama (the original Buddah) did not claim to be sinless. He tried to the best of his ability to reach that state. It was never claimed that Jesus 'reached' that state, but that He always 'was' in it, His references to being God are not claims made by Sidartha. Essentially they are not actually saying the same things at all. Again, if Jesus is who He said He is, then Sidartha, who sought truth would believe in Jesus as well. It really isn't a versus type of thing. I very much like 'zen'. I very much like 'aspects' of many things . I claim to know what I know because of Jesus, if he's not who He says He is then no one should believe in Him, but if He is ..... (you can probably tell by my capital 'h's what 'I' believe.)

    My family was buddhist.
    I'm protestant Christian.
I was appalled a few days back on the absense( not lack of sympathy) in our Bible study group leaders response towards animals killed.
I have recently turned vegetarian ( except I still eat fish). I tried to show the brutal heart wrenching videos of Mammals enduring generations of suffering for our selfish taste buds.
I was appalled by our Bible study group leaders arrogant response that they are his food. And ask how about the suffering of the animals, should we ignore it. His answer made me realize there is no love in his heart. He said yes ignore it.
I know there are Christians out there that God gave a good heart seeking for answer. I pray that the church leaders will teach the right teachings that there are many commandments in the Bible that show we longer need meat.
The answer is within the Bible.
Wrong leaders teaching the wrong interpretation of verses that is creating the problem
    God's Original plan
    Genesis 1:29
And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. tYou shall have them for food.
Bec of the flood and with no Vegetation
    We were allowed to eat.
If the vegetation is back. Then there is no need to eat meat.
In case if emergencies like famine calamities. Meat can be eaten.
    GOD Does not change.
It's only these heavy meat eating leaders that want to interpret it that the permission to eat was never taken back.
    Psalms 40:6
Sacrifice and offering you did not desire- but my ears you have opened - burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.
Proverbs 27:23: "Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds."
    God loves His Animals.
    Proverbs 23:20
Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat
Micah 6:8 is a verse commonly cited to compel people to act in times of injustice: “Do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God.”
    Isaiah 1 11
    The multitude of your sacrifices-
what are they to me?” says the Lord.
“I have more than enough of burnt offerings,
    of rams and the fat of fattened animals;
    I have no pleasure
in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
    Hosea 6:6-7 ESV
For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
Animals are for farm work not food
    Deuteronomy 22:10
Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together.
Pairing animals of different sizes and strength will put a strain on the smaller animal or both.
Contrast that to the condition of modern day animals farming that the calf is taken away after birth. Pigs caged for 4 yrs to give birth again ang again in confined cages.
    Psalm 104 14
    He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;
( plants for food for men)

It should be noted that the Buddhists also believe in "anatman" a Sanskrit word meaning "non self", which essentially means there is nothing permanent about us, as corporeal beings (including a soul). This might be a departure from Christianity if you believe in an immutable (unchanging) soul. Great thing about Buddhism is that you can examine its tenets and if you disagree based on the evidence decide not to believe that tenet (or admit it is unknowable). I like the parable I read in a book by the Thai Therevada Buddhist monk Buddhadasa Bhikku (he reinstated forest monasteries in Thailand). A bunch of Religious leaders are led into a dark room, inside of which is an elephant (representing the whole and ultimately unknowable truth). They are asked to touch the truth and describe it. Anybody holding the tail will believe it is long and skinny and with a tuft of hair at the end. The people holding ears will say "the truth is large and smooth and flat". Those at the rear end may believe the truth is wrinkly and HUGE. If we flick the light switch on all the wise leaders come out of the dark and bathed in the light of TRUTH realise "Christ! Buddha! Allah!....we've all been grasping at the same thing?".

I’m not sure I see how Buddhism and Christianity can be equated quite as easily as some suggest. Surely they are paths which are built upon entirely different premises? They have entirely different approaches when answering the basic question, ‘Why is there suffering?’. Christianity is built upon the notion that we suffer because of sin, because a loving God imposed suffering upon humanity as a result of disobedience. Buddhism is built upon the notion that we suffer because of ignorance, because we do not see the world as it really is. Ignorance and sin are not the same thing albeit they may often overlap. Christians need a sacrifice to be redeemed whereas Buddhists plunge deep into the nature of the human mind is in order to overcome ignorance. These ‘solutions’ are not the same. Of course Christians can cherry-pick some of the techniques of Buddhism but that is all.

Instead, we have shown the depth of our ignorance and the shallowness of our understanding. We show how superficially we assess and judge words. Instead of going beyond our own prejudice, we allow it to dictate our limited view. Everything said is wrong because words can only point, never reveal.
In the words of the Christian mystic, Meister Eckhart, when we can let go of all our ideas and concepts, drop all our childish, naive thoughts, we enter into the Silence. Then, when we learn unknowing, maybe, just maybe, we approach that which is beyond approaching.

That's wrong. Christianity is all about Jesus not ourselves. The reason you thought it's about "being good enough" is because you were taught works salvation and not the true gospel of the grace of God. The Bible flatout tells us we're not good enough thus God made a way for us to be reconciled to Him by receiving the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Going to heaven is so easy it does not require anything of us except faith in Jesus as our only means of salvation. Forget Buddhist nonsense and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

One is moral, in buddhism, as a MEANS to an end.
Moksha, or relaese is the goal.
In Christianity love of thy neighbor is an end in itself. In other words the individual is AFFIRMED in Christianity.

Early Buddhism..Theraveda is about moksha..not coming back.

I was chatting to a fellow member of our sangha here in Taiwan, and he mentioned how difficult it was to undo the damage caused by western missionaries when Taiwanese fall into one of their churches, and then return to the sangha. We have to “undo” so much baggage: homophobia, misogyny, hell-obsessions, sex-guilt, and a deeply cruel mindset of “us” and “them”. Forgive me sir, but nothing good comes out of your religion - except, perhaps, as a stark contrast that allows us to better see the beauty of the Dhamma.

Until finding out Buddhism (I knew nothing about it; I thought Buddha was a god) I was only going through life suffering everyday and telling myself that one day I would find rest in Heaven. I was litteraly waiting to die, waiting for the pain to end. Buddhism, as well as Hinduism and Taoism, taught me how to let go, how to recieve God’s salvation while still alive. “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done!” And I began to love myself and everybody else, as Jesus told us to do. I finally understood the true nature of God, that He is not a person or an entity, but the very existence in it’s pure form. God is everywhere and at all times, God _is_ place and time, and we are born out of His love, out of His will and Consciousness. You know, the Holy Trinity is much like the Hindu gods, more of them, each with their own attributes, but one in essence. Just so, we humans are smaller Gods, each of us endowed with the power of love and awareness, and if we all did our part, all suffering would disappear and only pure bliss in unity would remain forever, for that is the only reality beyond these illusions. Even quantum physics back up my words. It just is right, it is true and that’s it.
