Jeff, thank you so much for this and your other videos. I lived in Lawrence Road (no 132) as a student back in the 80s. I'm writing about those days now (most likely not for publication!) and your tours of the city are so appreciated. Very happy to have found the channel.
Hello Jeff, My father had a Grocery Shop on Lawrence Road since 1975 - 1995. In 1975 it was called Mace Groceries, I remember as I was only 8 years old, there used to be a Health Shop opposite our Fathers Shop which was number 15 Lawrence Road., I remember a Chip shop next door by the name of Tams, A shop that used to sell Hats too, and a bargain store by the name of Bells. There used to be a pub by the name of Salisburys Pub. And a Hair dresses and a betting shop on the same block as our old Shop. We lived above 15 Lawrence Road. My dad was from Yemen and my Mother. We were 9 children in our family, we were all born in Warrington in the -early- mid-late 70s.- I remember the Church building on the next block, there used to be a Musical band Annual Parade that used to march through Lawrence road with vibrant costumes and uniformed scouts, and military and police parades. I remember this very well in the year 1980-1984. I was only 8 years old at that time. I also remember a Queens Jubilee parade marching through Lawrence road in 1982.
I live on Arundel Avenue Off Smith down Road. I was born in the Princess Park Area. Today I'm A Member Of The Frontline Church. I Love Our City. Thankyou Jeff1photo for your taking the time to share ! .
Hi Jeff, Justa quick one, The Park was as you say ccalled the mystry & every year they had the Wavertree flower show held there, with a variety of fairground entertainment , a great day for the families to spend there every year .
Couldn’t get past 7:30 just looks so awful. God only knows what the original residents would make of it now. I thought what’s happened to Garston village was bad enough but this is on next level 😢 Well done for documenting these places. So important.
The Road now looks like Gramby St. No mention of the Police station as you walked past it, the wall next to the Lune Laundry is the railways lines, no park behind that part untill you got passed Avondale, You also ommitted the telephone exchange opposit the barracks, also the girls school my sister went to, The salisbury was a Greenhalls pub and very lush inside, The Church on the corner Salisbury Rd, was where the Orange lodge did their practice and would always be seen marching along the streets, Also Salibury Rd & Cranborne was the route of Billy Smarts Circus when it came to Sefton Park, They used to arrive by train to Picton Rd Sidings opposite Cambridge St which we called the Coal yard.
Thanks for all the info, I didn't know about the plans for the M62. Neither did I know about the places I omitted, so thank you for filling in the missing points of interest. Much appreciated.
@@Jeff1photo Do you remember Salisbury rd when it became a bus route when the Wavertree Rd/Picton rd railway bridge was rebuilt into concrete, Traffic was diverted along Tunnel Rd and down Smithdown and left into Salisbury Rd, In the early days of the divertion a young girl around 5 years old got run over by a bus next to the letter box on the cross road. The letterbox was an obstuction but was never moved. Also George Harrison lived just around the corner from there in Cecil St, It was his granddads house, his cousin still lives in that st and the same junction also features on a Channel 4 advert of kids playing football.
When I filmed Wavertree Road it was my first visit since the 1980s. The shops were still there, so it had been a few years. I don't remember the bridge work, but I do remember a young child making the news for being run over in Salisbury Road a couple of years ago. 2020 or 21 maybe?
Just a few comments , I spent a few weeks at Lawrence rd school after the war but no mention of how it looks today, also the Salisbury pub I think its been turned into flats, this was my early upbringing , my Family were all born in & around Alderson rd, this was very close to my heart. Regards
Thanks for the comment. I missed the school as you say and looking at it now there's a couple of old photos of it as it was. Oh well maybe another trip to include it.
I live around here and was told by local who has been raising money for this refurbishment past 10 years, along with government funding. it will become a mosque for the Muslim community and community centre, the building is privately owned by a Bangladeshi man. nice too see investment and building being restored
anytime hun, I myself walk past this church daily basis and witnessed its decomposing and vast litter and fly tipping within its grounds. I noticed contractors clearing the site from outside first and they are now inside the building, scaffolding been erected.it has taken years off hard work to get this project of the ground and funding from the Muslim community and government. will be beautiful building once again wants all exterior restoration is complete. Inside is endless space including basement. will also be used as functions venue which is fab way off funding its future upkeeping and maintenance.
I wish someone would have the authority to plant some trees. Not a shred of green anywhere. I’m sorry but that’s a very ugly road. No wonder people become depressed in those environments.
@@Jeff1photo take up a few paving flags every 20 meters. Plant trees in a nice long row like in other European cities. Problem is people are so moronic and like living like we see in the video they’d probably snap the trees down in a matter of a few weeks. It’s happened many times sadly. Also the council want zero maintenance. A councillor once told me trees are too much bother to maintain so we avoid planting them.
It helps with traffic flow. This is a very busy road. If everyone parked on the road correctly, it would actually cause more problems for the cars and other vehicles trying to pass through it.

The Lune gets a mention in the Liverpool Lullaby, sung by Cilla.

One year, must have been early 70s there was an air show there. Or am I dreaming? I remember going to it anyway.

So important.
It started raining near the end, got soaked walking back to my car. Looked even worse in the rain.
@@Jeff1photo - lucky your car was still there.
Asda car park on Smithdown 👍

the building he asked about was the orange lodge meeting hall
Thanks for posting - I don't know this area so was interesting for me to see.

That's good news, something the community can use is much better than more student flats. Thanks for telling us.

IT WAS THE BOUNDRY OF THE RAILWAY NOT THE PARK AS YOU MENTIOND
Yes, true, someone else said the same.
I wish someone would have the authority to plant some trees. Not a shred of green anywhere. I’m sorry but that’s a very ugly road. No wonder people become depressed in those environments.
Where would you plant a tree?
“Not a shred of green anywhere.” - wrong. Walk down any back entry in that area and they are infested with the dreaded Buddleia.

Why park on the pavement.
