    Should you do your room checks before locking your door? That’s what I would do in case (god forbid) someone needs to access my room. Then lock the door once you’ve checked everywherr

    Good video. However, your room check is woefully inadequate! Here's what I do when I check-in. I sniff for cigarette smoke. If I smell it, I immediately go back and ask for a non-smoking room. Yeah, I know rooms and properties are supposed to be non-smoking. But, do you really want the $150 and up "cleaning fee" for someone else's smoking? Likewise look for cigarette burns in furniture and bedding. (You would be amazed at how many cigarette burns I've seen in beds!) Next thing is take time-stamped photos of the condition and operation of the furnishings of the room. I stayed at a hotel in Ohio which apparently had a scam going of claiming guests stole the microwave from the room. When I checked-in I took my photos. The microwave listed on the website wasn't there. A couple of hours after I checked-out the next morning, I got a phone call from the "manager" of the place telling me that they were adding $500 to my charge because of the microwave I "stole". I did a 180 back to the town where I'd stayed. Instead of the hotel, I went to the police station. I showed them the photos I took at check-in. A couple of days later, while on the road west, I got a call back from the police. Seems their investigation found that I wasn't the only one. And, a couple of arrests had been made. Needless to say, that "charge" didn't appear on my bill. Next, pickup the handset of the phone and verify that there's a dial tone and that you can call out. If it doesn't work get another room. It's not worth your time trying to fix it. Next, besides using the hotel bar and deadbolt on the room door, put a folded-up piece of paper in the door jamb on the hinge side of your door when you close it. That way, if someone even tries opening your door in the middle of the ight, you'll know it. About a year and a half ago, I was in Fallon, NV and got up at 3 AM. (I'm a guy. And, I was 63 years old at the time. No other explanation needed, right? LOL!) and found that not only was the piece of paper on the floor, but the hotel bar was pushed-back. (I'd forgotten to set the deadbolt. Never again!) After I'd competed what I needed to, I was torn between calling the police or the front desk. In a rare moment of forgiveness (Dealing with my ex-wife and the manner of her leaving me has left me with a extreme reluctance to ever forgive again...), I decided to call the front desk. A very contrite front desk clerk answered. His first words? "I knew you'd call. I'm very sorry about the attempted entry to your room. You room was accidentally assigned to another guest. When the key I gave them wouldn't open the door, they complained and I used my master key to verify that the door wasn't defective. I've already notified the manager to expect you to be wanting to see her later in the morning." Needless to say, the manager was extremely apologetic. And, I was "comped" for what happened. Rule of thumb: Never Trust. And, forgive even less. Good video overall. Probably a lot of people let their guard down when they travel.

    My neighbor was "stewardess" for TWA back in the day.....(yes i know flight attendant is the appropriate word now, but when she was doing that job back then, she was called a stewardess so I'm sticking to that).....Anyhow, she shared a story about finding a dead body under the bed in her hotel room upon arrival, the hotel was never quite able to explain how housekeeping could've missed it considering it was starting to smell and this room was always blocked for cabin crew and had heavy turnover. So when you said look behind shower curtain, look into closet and check under the bed.....you're absolutely right!!

    Glad to c u back in the air. When u mentioned about securing the deadbolt it reminded me of one of my many trips to Mexico City. I was dead asleep and about 3 AM apparently they assigned my room to another guest. The bellhop tried to open the door which caused me to rocket awake. With my pulse racing, I managed to decipher that the bellhop was telling the guest that they must have assigned the wrong room. It happened so fast I’m not sure if I was scared, stunned or confused or maybe all three. So ur tips for checking a room when checking in were spot on. Stay health and God Bless.

  • @davebones6120
    @davebones6120 3 роки тому

    You should also check the exits. Where is the nearest exit? Where does it leave you if you need to use it? Where would you go if you had to leave the premises? I had a very scary experience in Louisville. The fire alarm went off and there was smoke in the hallway. I went to the stairs from my fifth floor room and down the six stories of steps. (But I was on the fifth floor). Unbeknownst to the hotel was built on a hill and the exit dumped out down the hill. That last flight of stairs was very scary because I didn't know where I was.
    Luckily, I made it out and got around to my rental car in the front. Also know where you keys or other valuables are in case you have to grab them in the middle of the night.

    I have been all over the world and spent countless nights in hotel and motel rooms. I always check to make sure the windows and balcony doors are locked. I find them unlocked all the time. And I mean all the time. The last time I traveled was in January and both nights I found the window unlocked. And both rooms were ground level. I also do the rattle test when I leave my room. That means rattling the door handle and making sure the door is both latched and locked. A number of times I have found the door to not be secured after letting it close on its own. I also turn up the temperature of the refrigerator to its coldest setting immediately upon arrival, if I'm using it. Invariably staff set it to the warmest setting, probably at management direction, to conserve energy. And I always check to make sure the alarm clock is turned off. I learned that lesson very early on when I was rudely awakened earlier than I had planned on. I have an internal alarm, so I rarely ever use an alarm to wake up, so I need to make sure it's off before I go to bed.

    I think the reason they do those hotel checks is because a flight attendant most likly got hurt by a stranger hiding in a hotel room!

    Congratulations on your inaugural trip back.👍❤🛫 I can't resist asking you what you would do if you opened the shower curtain or the closet door and a big guy hopped out? Honestly, I would probably pee in my pants!😱🤣. I assume that you are prepared to either attack him, assume a defensive stance or run out of the room screaming. Would love to hear your answer on this question Julia. Take care and enjoy your week.

      We’ve been taught some techniques in training if we ever encounter an intruder so I would use those and kick it into high gear and do everything in my power to get them OUT of my room! Hopefully this will never happen though! 😳 thank you John as always for watching!

    Hi Julia!
    I have a couple questions.
    1. How often do you go to PDX cause it’s the best airport in my book.
    2. What’s the longest flight you have done?

    • @JettingJulia
      @JettingJulia  3 роки тому

      Hi! I honestly don’t go through PDX too often but would love a long layover there & longest flight I have done is dfw-nrt it was 13 hours!
