  • This is part of my series on various dark sky sites for star gazing. I'll start with Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah. It's an International Dark Sky Park and a Bortle 2. It's about a three and a half hour drive from Salt Lake City, UT. The park has two campgrounds you can stay in or you can rent a Yurt. Or you can stay at a hotel in nearby Moab, UT but the park closes at 10:00 pm. So you can't get much star gazing done in summer time when it doesn't get dark until 9:30 pm. Watch and see how I rate this park as a dark sky site for star gazing. I'm sorry about the dirt on my camera sensor. My video camera card was full and I had to switch to a different camera that had been sitting in the dusty car all week. Sorry.

    Hi Tsula, glad you had a great trip and some wonderful night skies to enjoy. The Milky way looked breathtaking. What a fantastic location, just to see so much land with no light at night mist be an astronomers dream! Thanks for sharing🌙✨

      Thank you, Linda. Everything looks better under dark skies and it's a big bonus to go to such beautiful places and not have any obstructions.

    Dead Horse is our most favorite place to visit. Never been able to observe there but the scenery is beautiful.

      It's a beautiful park and a great place to star gaze. I was so pleased that they went to the effort to get dark sky site designation.

    Hello Tsula, ur last videos were great and this aswell. I like ur intro alot, astronomy with passion and heart :) Glad the seeing was good, that shot of the milky way is really cool with that angle and all. Also im glad that u got the equivalent of one the the stolen items as a gift. 5k subcribers soon, i hope we get a nice celebration video with some cool topic :) That video of "what to watch on buying used scopes" was very nice maybe we could get to know more off that topic.

    Glad you had a 4-star experience, Tsula! One of these days I have to make it to a really dark site, if nothing else just to see the Milky Way. Anxious to see the later episode with 21.98 SQM skies. Wow!!

      Thank you, Greg. I highly recommend it. The part where I was in a Bortle 1 with an SQM of 21.98, was the longest segment and will take me a while to complete. Also I am struggling with whether I should reveal the name of my beloved park. I have been going there for 30 years now! And I just love it. What do you think? Should I remain mysterious about the location or reveal? Also I may have overlooked it but did you ever answer me about where you post your photos?

      @@tsulasbigadventures Hi Tsula. Yes, I posted a while ago about where I put my images: on Astrobin. My handle there is CingStars. I think mysterious is good -- it will keep us in gripping suspense! 😃 I did mange to get one night on the Mice, but such a short time for a small and very distant target I wasn't able to produce a very good image. I'm going to see if I can get more time on it once the weather cooperates. I posted a preliminary image (from that one night) on Instagram. My page there is under my name, same as UA-cam but without numbers, of course.

    Sqm readings will always be worse when the milky way is at Zenith

    • @tsulasbigadventures
      @tsulasbigadventures  16 днів тому +1

      Well, in a later episode I have not finished yet, I went to a Bortle 1 site and got an SQM of 21.98 with the Milky Way arched all the way across the sky (I guess that is what you mean by at the zenith). I think the ranger is correct about Grand Junction and she could have also mentioned the light pollution coming from nearby Moab, UT which is getting very large and is much closer.

    • @k.h.1587
      @k.h.1587 15 днів тому

      @@tsulasbigadventures that is exactly what I mean, when the summer triangle is up high, the sqm reads the glow from the milky way as if it was light pollution, and the sqm is designed to take readings at zenith where the sky is supposed to be darkest. But when the milky way passes straight overhead, try aiming it just away from the milky way and see what reading you get.
      Dark skies also fool you with zodiacal light, but from watching your videos I gather you would be asleep by then. I have never, or only rarely fell asleep at a dark site before dawn, but I am naturally nocturnal

    • @tsulasbigadventures
      @tsulasbigadventures  15 днів тому

      @@k.h.1587 I always take several measurements because the first three are always different. I didn't even think about the Zodiacal light. I kept thinking that this other place I was camping was not very dark but now I think maybe it just seemed that way because it was so dark I could see the Zodiacal light. I was staying up very late but when in a campground I felt bad for the other campers because my mount made noises when I slew but I got a lot of star gazing in believe me.

    • @k.h.1587

      @tsulasbigadventures zodiacal light comes up in the east about an hour before dawn, if you think you pissed of some campers, I was once using a nexstar GT at a campground for old times sake back in 2017, and they don't get much louder than that. Payback for all the campfires and flashlights earlier in the night. It was the final straw with my friend's wife who was also there and just couldn't understand why I would stay up all night and start using that noisy thing when everyone else was sleeping. The main part of the observing was done with silent non goto mounts with the 8" on cg5 and televue 101 on the m3. But I had brought the resurrected original configuration of my nexstar 80gtl and wanted to relive my 2004 experiences but from darker skies. The dark sites I took my original rigs to in the early days were not as dark as borrego springs

      @@k.h.1587 Well, people were very respectful and promptly went to bed at quiet hour of 10 pm at this particular campground which was in a dark sky site. So, I can't really say they deserved pay back but I have stayed at other campgrounds where everyone had their own flashlight that they insisted on pointing at me and the night sky and there were times when I wanted more than to make a noisy mount wake them up. I actually got into an altercation with some teenagers who decided to congregate across from my campsite with all their flashlights. I asked them to leave and when they pretended like they were leaving but didn't actually leave, I started screaming at them and threatening them and finally the hooligans left. This was at a national park near the Bay Area.
