    I've got an old 6" Meade ETX-LS that appears to be dead. I pulled it out of several years in storage, and it won't do anything. The hand controller screen glows red, but that's it. No text, and the buttons generate no response from the mount at all. The OTA is in perfect shape. Is it really worthless? Thanks.

      @@tsulasbigadventures I've explored that. There's no way to directly mount a dovetail bar on this tube, so I'd have to find rings and a bar that fit, and they aren't cheap. Thanks. I'm glad you were unscathed in the crash. That was nasty.

      @@Mike-mr8ui You have two choices. One is that you can find instructions in UA-cam for removing the telescope from the single fork arm and installing a dovetail. Number two you can send the mount to a Meade repair shop. There is one in New England called The Astronomy Shoppe and they repair Meade ETX telescopes.

    Great find. Be careful with that Orion padded bag. I have one that I used with a brand-new XT8 Dobsonian. The zipper scratches the paint on the tube slightly, and if you carry it by the bag's handles, it is very easy for it to swing around and bonk something and put a dent in the tube. I have since stopped using that bag and instead carry it to and from the car in my hands/arms, and then wrap it in fleece blankets in the car. Nothing to scratch the tube up, and having full control as I move the tube prevents further dents.

    Thanks very much for this, Tsula! It looks like your efforts in the cold were rewarded. There are two images, near the end of this video, spaced very close together, in which Algol appears to grow brighter. Algol enjoys the distinction of being one of the first stars studied extensively with the Doppler shift, laying the groundwork for Hubble's confirmation of an expanding universe. I was just now reviewing the Wiki article on this ("Algol") and came across an animated GIF showing the periodic eclipses - remarkably, this actual video, created recently with professional astronomy equipment, shows not only the eclipses themselves but also the dim partner. In case you don't release another video before the holidays, I hope you enjoy them. 🙂

    • @tsulasbigadventures
      @tsulasbigadventures День тому

      Thanks, Walter. Making a time lapse of Algol changing brightness was much harder than I thought it would be. When you look at Algol with your naked eye it is very obviously getting dimmer on the evenings of the minima but capturing that with a camera was quite the challenge. I think I saw the animated GIF you are referring to. It is somewhat blurry but clearly shows the two stars orbiting each other which is a phenomenal achievement. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.

      Absolutely IF and this is a big IF you can lift it. With diagonal, eyepiece, and finder scope it weighs 30 pounds and almost all the weight is at the back of the telescope where the primary mirror is located. It is a great telescope. I finally learned how to get it onto the mount by using a table and that helped a lot. If the weight is not an issue for you then $800 is a bargain! I took this telescope on a three week camping trip to dark sky sites and had a blast but it was hard to get it onto my Losmandy Mount. Other than that I have no complaints about the amazing views through this telescope.

It will be a Xmas gift for my teenage son and many people might exclaim this isn’t an ideal beginner telescope so I’m considering the CELESTRON AstroMaster 114EQ or something similar. I’d really like the ability to view galaxies though. Can you offer any suggestions?

    • @tsulasbigadventures
      @tsulasbigadventures 3 дні тому

      @@shannonkerosene522 I see. The 8" telescope is only 12.5 pounds. Much more manageable. I would get the 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope over the Celestron Astromaster 114. You can see so much more in the sky with an 8" telescope. You can see a lot of galaxies with an 8" telescope. I also own a Meade 8" LX90 telescope that is wonderful. It's on a goto mount that is very accurate and easy to use. If you just buy the telescope you will still need a mount to put it on. If I had a choice between a 114mm telescope and 203mm I would go with the 203. It gathers much more light and you will see more detail. Of course the limiting factor beyond the aperture is going to be how light polluted the skies are where you will be viewing. I have many other videos explaining about this and how to find objects etc. Please feel free to ask any other questions. I am very happy to help!

    Nice scope, glad it's got a great new owner!! I bought a used XT12i over the last year that was very well maintained by it's previous owner. It's got the 2" Moonlight (black), 9x50 RACI & Telrad (with heated dew shield), cooling fan, secondary thumb knobs, and the OTA was flocked top & bottom. Also came with the Orion padded bag that had been used but is in great shape... unfortunately it didn't come with the box of goodies like yours did, lol. The encoders have 2006 on them. I was a little hesitant about the 20 year old coatings at first, but the mirrors look great considering the age. There's a slight amount of pin holing in the coatings when shining a light from the back, but they still put up a great image. I'm no mirror expert, but I believe there's still some life left in 'em before it's time for a recoat.

    Nice find. I knew as soon as I saw the focuser come out from behind your car it was going to be a nice one. I have considered upgrading my single speed that came on my Skywatcher 8" to a dual speed since I like it on my 5.25 inch that I use for astrophotography, but I haven't been able to justify the price to myself. I have seen a few options for modifying a single speed to retrofit it into a dual speed, but haven't done much research on them. I had one small 70mm mak that came with a red dot finder and for some reason, I really hated the thing. After watching this though I think that is because it was the only method of finding objects and perhaps on my 8" I will consider getting one of those dual saddles and giving it a try. It would be nice for getting those first bright stars in view. Never considered a correct image finder since my scopes came with straight through finders, but I can see how that would make it easier when looking between the sky and the star chart. I must say I agree with you on not needing knobs for the secondary mirror, but I will be getting some kind of knobs for my primary mirror because needing an Allen wrench to adjust it drives me bananas and I am clumsy enough to drop things in the grass and never find it again even in daylight. Maybe with Christmas coming up I will add some Bob's knobs to my wish list.... Anyway, another nice video. Keep them coming! I always be sure to click on them when they come across my feed.

    I’ll never forget driving down the road and suddenly noticing a red glow almost as if I was at a stoplight (it was a rural road with no stoplights nearby). I pulled over, got out and just stared up. I couldn’t believe how vibrant the red was to the naked eye.

      Yes. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. Really cool to see.

    Thanks a lot Tsula for the information about this program. I was wondering if, to complete each object, you had to come back to it several times, or was it just a one-shot observation? Approximately how long did you spend on each object, and did you observe multiple objects per night, or just one to describe it thoroughly? Thanks! I'll try to give it a go with my little vintage 60mm and 90mm Vixen telescope. ;-)

      Once I got oriented and knew what area of the moon I was on, then I could observe several objects in one session. I would have to stop at each one and record how it looked and anything special I noticed, sky conditions etc, and then resume. So, the most I could get in any one session was about seven or so. Since you have to observe and record each object takes about ten minutes not including finding the object.

    I bought a 10” dob, but I did 2 upgrades you didn’t mention. I spray-glued flat black felt to the interior of the tube to ensure maximum contrast. I also use a shower cap at the entrance and a breathable medical headpiece to vent moisture and keep out critters.

    • @tsulasbigadventures
      @tsulasbigadventures 7 днів тому

      Those are also nice upgrades. I think I am going to get that bottom cover to add in addition to the Telegizmo cover to keep things out of the bottom.

    @16:00 "Oh, my God. Oh, my God." That right there is exactly why visual astronomy is so awesome! People who've only seen pictures can't understand what it's like to see something so fabled...so glorious...with the actual eye....just hanging there in space. I'd say it's a transcendent experience! Psalm 19:1 states, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands".

    What a find! The eyepiece kit alone was almost worth the sale price. I'm a Dob-head and I've made all of those upgrades to an old Discovery 8" dob. Enjoy your new Sky Ride, Tsula!

    Awesome video like always Tsula. A couple of observations: You don't need to level the base to use the encoders with Intelliscope, I simply love that! The other one is that I'm pretty sure Orion never shipped their XT line with red dot finders, they all come with the right angle correct image finder scope. I find it so sad that Orion folded without any warnings, we need more Orion dobs out there!

      Thank you! Maybe I should try to encoder again. I think I was taking too long to center the two stars. I'm going to try it again because it really is a nice feature. I was heart broken when Orion went out of business. I bought my first telescope from the store in downtown San Francisco in the 1990s. Yes, you are correct that it came standard with that 9x50 finder scope. This lady still had the original owner's manual and that's what it says.

    Great video, the lady who had it certainly looked after it and Im.sure happy went to a good home, for serious Dob users a motorised tracking platform works well..gets about an hour of tracking before needs re-northing they say ..best wishes

    Wow! What a great find! I bought an Apertura AD8 (8 inch dobsonian) and also got the performance upgrade kit, which has the knobs for the secondary, better collimation knobs for the primary, flocking paper for the tube (around the focuser and the the primary) which I felt was totally worth it. I also purchased a Telrad (years ago I used to have a 12 Inch Skywatcher collapsible dobsonian and I had also added a Telrad to that). The AD8 came with a cooling fan already installed. I also own the Televue 27 Panoptic (and I think it cost ~$400 so you got an incredible deal to have it included). Also bought that Telegizmo reflective cover (I store my scope in the unheated garage so the cover is always on it) I sometimes wish I had sprung for the AD10 but my thinking is that I will use the AD8 for now and then step back up to a 12 or 16 inch dobsonian in a couple of years. Also have the Orion Ultrablock filter (I've had it for 12+ years) and it is great. I am bummed that Orion went out of business because they were reasonably priced and had a ton of stuff.

      Your telescope sounds like a great package. I was very sad that Orion closed. I bought my first telescope at the store they had on Chestnut Street in the 1990s.
