Kyokoshin karate doesn’t allow strikes to the head which is why they don’t have a guard, they don’t focus on blocking attacks either. It’s pretty much an endurance combat sport which is why it’s always going to be poorly matched against other martial arts if they are sticking to their own rules

Ok most of you clearly havent seen this movie. This is before his fight with Wong Jack Man. Before the fight he was arrogant, after the fight he was humbled and changed his “style.” This scene is before he became the world renowned actor and fighter we are familiar with.
He explains it in the beginning of the movie. He’s doing a lot more than “just being cocky”. He’s getting into his opponents head. (It’s not personal and he’s only like that when he fights…to get into their heads, makes them overly aggressive and angry…they stop thinking…and throw the fight)

But people during Bruce Lees time who actually saw and meet him, all they said was that he was a men of confidents nothing about arrogant or cocky. But I get how people mix Confidence with Arrogance, both similar but no the same. Gene Bell has spoken very highly about Bruce, emphasizing his humility, work ethic and his Willingness to learn from others. I personally Say that only the Newer generation who never saw a Bruce lee movie, just the version of him where someone is playing him, like in Quentin Tarantino or this Movie, but not the actual Bruce lee movies with Bruce lee, and the problem in the Newer Ones, people like to portray him as Arrogant, and thats the reason people think that.
I've always hated how Hollywood respresents fighting styles...Nobody fights with that much space between them...People close in, grapple, back up etc...Wing Chun and Kung Fu all look so spectacular until it's put to practical combat and they get crushed by wrestlers, kick boxers, muay thai etc. because it's all show and no substance.
"Kung Fu" is a massive umbrella term for all sorts of martial arts coming out of China. Some of it is very practical, in line with Muay Thai. Some of it is just meant to sell gym memberships. Some of it is meant for show and has whole competitions that are basically judged like artistic gymnastics, and really does take a lot of dedication to do at the highest level, just not fighting. Some of it is meant to make a movie fight scene look cool. It's complicated.
@@wonnono It depends, there are a ton of empty hand styles and forms with close spacing. that's smart, martial arts are about stoping conflicts and violence not causing them. So if he know he can avoid most conflicts by carrying a gun, why not.
All these people saying Bruce never competed, what you obviously don't know was Bruce did boxing which he won the hong kong championship, he trained under ip man, he also won most of his street fights. Some of his students were chuck Norris, sharon tate, and kareem abdul-jabbar.
Those were not his biggest students. Dan isonato was his best student. Bruce isn't fight pro either. He was amateur. But he was the fastest around with hands.
as a karate blackbelt that movement with the pauses which the karate "master" uses is called 'kata' which is basically a set of practice movements for a very definite scenario mostly used to train physical endurance. "kumite" is the word used for fights and in karate its basically a controlled street brawl. if you want to see how kumite actually works just search it on youtube bcs this video is not really an accurate show of kumite
I don't think anyone thought Hollywood fight choreography was a 1-1 representation of the real deal. And honestly, making fights scenes super realistic in movies is kinda dumb and wouldn't look as cool. Just watch the actual sport at that point.
@@kevinkenny5663 kinda but kata with the right application can work but in certain situations while kumite as described offers better fights especially when you are going up against street fights with no rules kumite can be great and turn heels on to heads if used correctly. That's it. I'm seeing a lot of Bruce. Lee wasn't this way. he was humble blah blah blah in the comments. Bruce Lee got kicked out more than one school for being arrogant. it wasn't this kind of arrogance though. he saw a better technique than what was being taught and refused to do inferior techniques. then when challenged about it, he proved his technique was better by hitting people
He did not get kicked out those schools because he was genuiny arrogant and cocky, though the teachers may have accused him of that. He was not satisfied with the old techniques of offense and defensive fighting. He was sure there were new and better techniques to be developed from combining the old ways offensive and defensive fighting. Most young people with new ideas, come off as arrogant to the teachers of the old ways.
@@VictorMonarque something akm to arrogance is passed down the generations in JKD as well. JKD students are encouraged to explore, learn other styles and go to other schools, but they also go to those schools and tend to be uncooperative. like one of the instructors doing a demonstration where he was told to hit the demonstrator and he used a finger fan technique Knowing that it would overcome the move the demonstrator was teaching. he made the argument that if that move can't defeat a finger fan then it's worthless. That's something like saying let me show you how to block a punch and then having someone come up and kick you and say oh well your technique to block this punch doesn't block my kick so it's worthless. yeah, the kick is more of an extreme example but it accentuates the point.
@@nicdominus7782 That may be, but it was not encouraged to come up with a totally new technique cherry picking from each of those established fighting styles. Which we all know is what happened, giving birth to MMA.
@@VictorMonarque One of Bruce Lee's bucks analyzed a bunch of different fighting styles where he picked out the strengths and weaknesses of each and what you could add to them to improve on them. he was the first to start mixing styles together to cover the weaknesses of each other. the current iteration of JKD combines Wing Chun, Muay Thai, escrima, Jiu-Jitsu, silot, And Jun Fong gung fu.

There's a lot of legends, but few actual videos to prove the legends. I only needed one. It is a home movie of Bruce Lee demonstrating a punch to the chest, shot at 15 frames per second. In one frame you see him start the punch, in the next frame, you see his fist recoiling, and the man reacting to the punch. The punch was so fast, it litterally could not be caught on film.
Even at 24fps that would be hard to capture. Too much motion blur.
That was an issue while filming Green Hornet. His strikes were too fast for the camera to detect. Director had to tell Bruce to slow his strikes down.

Don't watch once upon a time in Hollywood
Kyokoshin karate doesn’t allow strikes to the head which is why they don’t have a guard, they don’t focus on blocking attacks either. It’s pretty much an endurance combat sport which is why it’s always going to be poorly matched against other martial arts if they are sticking to their own rules
they do have a guard, they have to block kicks
how do you know this is Kyokushin? Kyokushin has fierce powerful kicks, unmatched in the martial arts world. trust me i know!! Kyokushin is all about offence once you defend. natural reaction to strike and destroy the other opponent.
Honestly with the rise of mma and ufc i think these movies are just b.s to watch
@ssibonis7619 While being practiced as a competative sport, there aren't strikes to the head allowed, I agree with you that when used as intended, as a means, method and way of combat, Kyokushin karate has incredibly effective and damaging kicks and strikes to the head and neck of the opponent of whom you intend to defeat as quickly as possible and as permanently as possible.

This is the best film because it's a love story and demonstrates the racism, internal struggle and obstacles that Bruce had to content with in order to break into the Hollywood scene. We see the real reason he went back to China and started a film career there. Best of them all IMO.
The truth is that Lee challenged a Karate master, the master called his bluff and Lee backed down.
Missing Bruce Lee - not enough movies but remain content with his fight scenes and wisdom left us.
In the Ip Man movies, a young Bruce asks Ip Man to teach him so he can beat people up. Ip Man tells him to go away and mature first

Bruce didnt even practice kung fu he practiced a mix of wing chu boxing and fencng with a twist of savate that he ended up calling it Jeet Kune Do
"Kung Fu" is a massive umbrella term for all sorts of martial arts coming out of China.
A lot of kung fu is based on the use of weapons, hence the space. Also there's a reason why art is the in the name of martial arts.
@@wonnono It depends, there are a ton of empty hand styles and forms with close spacing. as a karate blackbelt that movement with the pauses which the karate "master" uses is called 'kata' which is basically a set of practice movements for a very definite scenario mostly used to train physical endurance. "kumite" is the word used for fights and in karate its basically a controlled street brawl. if you want to see how kumite actually works just search it on youtube bcs this video is not really an accurate show of kumite
Kats is a dance class
@@nicdominus7782 I studied JKD under Cass Magda and me nor any of my classmates were arrogant. We would be humble to learn something new.
