Just a note - in the driving section, I forgot to mention that the soft front suspension can 'clang' down over road joins and sharp edges, especially at higher speeds. Thank you for watching, and thank you for subscribing!
This is sooo good looking, I know you either love it or not, but it's refreshing to see head turning cars these days. Great review and would love to see i20n and i30n reviews if you get a chance 😊
I used to drive i30’s in a work fleet. The new version is a much more pleasant looking car. I drive an EV so hybrids aren’t my thing, and I wonder at the 6 speed gearbox fitted to the i30 hybrid. If I was in the market for one or had access to an i30 work fleet I guess I’d choose the hybrid. The turbo engine would be the way to go. The road noise isn’t great, that’s for sure, but for the money they seem to a great car. The internal layout looks pleasant and comfortable. Great review as always.
The new fuel efficiency number for the i30 series is a huge step forward, also proofing that Hyundai and KIA used to offer rubbish transmission for Australia.
Hi Matt, really like your review! Though I'm wondering which has better value - entry level Hyundai i30 or Mg5 Essence, since they are the same price as 29k?
Great thought. I guess you might want to get your crystal ball out, as I think the resale value will be the main consideration. Sure, you get more warranty with the MG, but you get more safety technology in the i30, and a more reputable brand name.
8th Jan, 2024; There is a lot lacking with the MG5 Essence. Only has tilt adjustment steering wheel; no reach adjustment, the whole rear seat folds down as one piece; does not have 60:40 split, boot is 401 litres vs i30 474 litres, comes with spare saver tyre vs i30 full size spare tyre, only has standard cruise control vs i30 adaptive cruise control, the i30 base has numerous safety features that the MG5 Essence does not have. Currently the MG5 Essence is $28,990 drive-away whilst the i30 base sedan is $31,990 drive-away. I would try to find the extra $3,000 to buy the i30. Another alternative that I would have over the MG5 Essence would be the Kia Cerato S sedan (although it only has steel wheels) with the Safety Pack, currently $30,290 drive-away. Cheers.
Finally a review of this! I ordered the n line spec, miss out on some of the new tech coz i wanted the sporty look but this still looks sporty for the premium spec! Slight regret there!
Great review Matt. As usual. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the range stacks up when available. The fuel number for the hybrid will great if possible, in the 'real' world.
100% agree, but a shame either way. They bring out brilliant looking cars but I cannot bring myself to being stuck to 10K intervals. FYI that review you had on the Sonata was excellent. Came very close to getting one. That thing looks unbelievably good !! But that service intervals is an issue (I do quite a few kms per year). Anyway great channel Matt.
My cousin had 2 year old N line with 1.6 litre and 7 speed DSG. Lovely looking car, but he couldn't stand the terrible jerky DSG transmission and got rid of it.
A really good review Matt keep up the good work 👍. however you make the same mistake I think all motoring journalists make. Please Stop complaining about the service intervals. As an independent mechanic in Melbourne with nearly 15 years experience this is a big bear of mine when reviews complain about service intervals. I spend a lot time fixing problems that could be avoided because people push the service schedule further than they should. Australia has some really harsh conditions for cars & that means we need to service them correctly which is often more than most people think. Also all these capped price or pre-paid plans are just marketing BS. They don’t cover everything I do know as I have customers who have had these plans before and been told certain items are not covered & are extra costs.
Thanks for your comment mate. I hear you. I know plenty of people who swear by servicing on a far more regular basis, but the reality for a lot of people is that they abide by the recommended schedule stipulated by the brand, to stay in line for warranty cover and so forth.
Gotta say, I'm very impressed with the design of the front and rear lights, but would hate to fathom a guess what a replacement would cost, considering a standard front headlight on a Subaru WRX is $3,000 new from factory.
The styling update of the front is an improvement, but I just can't do that rear end, it's completely over styled and just looks ridiculous in my opinion! This is another car that would've looked better and been more practical if it had been a liftback, but then we would've kept the original i30 liftback (sorry Fastback)! If only the original i30 fastback was available in lower base specs or mirrored the i30 hatchback trim specs? The interior in the base spec is dreary and with a CVT, it's a no from me. The hybrid might be the best option in the lower specs? This car doesn't deserve the 'i30' name, Hyundai Australia should've kept it as Elantra. I can see this turning into another Sonata (YF) to i45 and then back to Sonata nonsense. At least now with 2024 i30 hatchbacks coming from Czechia this time round, I wonder if there'll be a chance the i30 wagon will make the trip over? I doubt it though ....
The only reason this car took the i30 name was to make it look good in sales reports. Elantra was a dying car. This is far from an i30. Hatch and sedan siblings share many similarities and the point of difference is the backside. This is zero with its hatch sister with all aspects other than the motor.
@therightcar just tested the latest model. It was a really fantastic drive. Power was good up to 60km, but then flat, the 110kw is not enough for me. I really want the NLine version, so I have to wait. Please test the NLine when it arrives. One thing I don't understand is why electronic seats are not included in the lower grade. Essential, in my opinion, it forces you to upgrade, which is a tactic i dislike.
No safety rating for this version so it is not possible to use for uber etc. Thats a shame because I can imagine with the hybrid fuel efficiency more uber drivers would consider it as a camry or corolla alternative at less of an upfront cost. Maybe it's time for ANCAP to pull their finger out and rate it 5 stars because with all the added safety tech surely that's what it would be rated just like the older generation of i30. Hyundai would probably get a lot more sales if it was officially ANCAP rated.
I don’t like how the hyundai hatches and sedans look from the front and back, now a days...they are trying to make it look too futurestic. I prefer the look on Corolla or all the other competitors that you mentioned in the video, over this one.
so the NSW Police are getting their new cars soon hey :) No one seriously would ever consider buying this in the private market, these are fleet specials noting more.
Indeed, the fact that once you switch them they still come back on would be infuriating. The X-Trail I have at least allows to switch off the obtrusive safety nannies save for lane departure warning which can't be fully switched off without giving you the warning on the dash board , that said you can put it into the lowest less mode and it only comes on if you do something really stupid That's why I'm loving the old AU Falcon I am right now while my car get repaired due to being hit by a dumb L playter who was on her phone and not paying attention (ai kid you not), no nannies other than ABS which is a passive system, also loving listening to all my ol cassette audio music from the 80's and 90's and the CD-R I made in the 200's.

@@therightcar I'll look forward to the sedan N and keep my fingers crossed you score a 20 in the not too distant future 🤞🤞🤞
I prefer the hatch. It's a good size though. Congratulations on 15k subs also 😎

Thoughts on base model i30 vs base model Cerato?
Great review Matt. As usual. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the range stacks up when available. The fuel number for the hybrid will great if possible, in the 'real' world.
Yep, I can't wait to see what I can manage in a hybrid version. Will cover it in depth when it's possible!
I ordered my 2024 elite a few weeks ago. Waiting not so patiently for it to be built and delivered

The grab handle is unusual but practical to help getting in and out.
I wanted to ask if this is the same model named Elantra until I read the description. Bula From Fiji!! nice and informative review
Thanks for that.
And Bula!
When is the N line review coming? Badly want one! Waiting for your review!
My cousin had 2 year old N line with 1.6 litre and 7 speed DSG. Lovely looking car, but he couldn't stand the terrible jerky DSG transmission and got rid of it.
I wouldn't be surprised if that was a common story with that DCT version.

Interesting how they’re sticking with the 7-speed DCT for the 1.6T, where the Kona’s and distant relative Seltos have both gone to a normal 8-speed.
Yep, I'd be down with a switch to the 8-speed.
If they had switched the transmission I would've bought the 1.6T
Gotta say, I'm very impressed with the design of the front and rear lights, but would hate to fathom a guess what a replacement would cost, considering a standard front headlight on a Subaru WRX is $3,000 new from factory.

Car looks nice but have they fixed the security issues? I don't want a car that is easy to steal.
Any idea when the premium or NLine will be released in WA. I Love Mazda, but hate their entertainment system, so dated.
Not sure - depends on the boats. But N Line is not expected in Australia for a few months.
You say the Corolla also now comes in top spec ZR hybrid. That car has been on sale for the last 2 years already
So... I'm correct?
@@therightcar You said NOW which makes it seem as if that model has just been released. No disrespect

Same can be said for Corolla and Mazda 3 which both offer sedan and hatches that have many different panels.
Look forward to seeing the hybrid review
Should be mid / late Feb 🙏
Thanks! Curious to see how it compares to the base model variant
Cannot decide between 24 Skoda Octavia Sportline or Hyundai i30 Sedan.
Why drop the Elantra name which established public awareness ?
So don't like this design update... like the older version more

It’s Meta Blue, a $595 option on Premium grade.

hyundai australia charging for this premium trim level 42000 $ must be out of touch with reality... not worth more than 35000 $
"Unimaginative"" black interior of the i30 makes it difficult to see you in your black shirt and hat, which dont seem very imaginative?

IT'S meant to be cheap crap but it isn't cheap anymore
Oh dear Hyundai, CVT......seriously!!! Bad move !!
Strange car in many ways
The issue I have with Hyundai and Kia turbo’s is the ridiculous 10,000km service intervals. Just completely crazy.
I hear you. It’s an impediment.
But the counter-argument is that more maintenance checks means less problems down the line…
I30 my arse! That's 100% an Elantra!
In Australia it's branded as an i30 Sedan.
No look at it 😂
