I've wondered if the hand positions and motions are for the chanter's use, like keeping track of who and what price they offered, or if they are signals to the bidders? Watching this from and having lived in the Baltimore-Annapolis area most of my decades, I'm not even sure there are livestock at our county fair, but maybe inflatable cows with "Made in China" stamped next to the filler tube. Sorry, but I'd always loved the livestock events before the entire county became a parking lot and offices. There might be a patch of grass left at BWI airport.......
