I can't express how grateful I am for this video! I've been hesitant to hand strip my own Irish because I was afraid I would hurt him by doing it wrong. This gave me the confidence to finally give it a go and my pup looks great now!!!
I started a grooming course here in Madrid and I can say that your videos help me a lot!! You explain yourself pretty well and is easy to follow. Appreciated!
It’s so strange that I haven’t been able to find a groomer who shows how to hand strip the face and ears, and it would be great to know which knives you use.
Lovely video! That dog looks so good afterwards. I have a standard schnauzer, who’s coat takes a very long time before it’s ready partly due to him being castrated. He will get little Bumps with crusts if we do it too soon.
Hey! Oh thank you so much! All my schnauzers at the moment are clipped, I’ll try and do a clipped video though. If we have a hand stripped schnauzer book in I will do a video too. Thank you.
I'm struggling to find a groomer to hand strip my 5 month old wire fox terrier. This video was great and makes me want to give it a go myself. A video with a wire fox terrier would be great. First timers would be even better!
What a beautiful job you did, amazing! Looking at this breed, a bit intimidated on if the stripping is something I could keep up with...didn't know it should be done every 8-12 weeks!
Love this video thank you very helpful and educational. I'm currently doing my level 2 and work part time in a groomers. I did my first hand stripping yesterday just need to quicken my technique.
Do you have a video on hand stripping a wire fox terrier? I have a WFT and an Airedale that need to be hand stripped and im trying to learn how to do it myself
Hi! Thank you for this, it is very informative. We are in love with the Irish Terrier having lost our 9.5 year old girl a year ago to cancer. We now have a 4 month old IT pup and I want to hand strip her myself. Can you recommend any products to start? Of course you needn't mention brands, but do I start with coarse, medium or fine stripping knives? I am about to order online. It is very hard to find a groomer who hand strips where we live (Canberra Australia).
Hello! Thank you for this lovely comment. So sorry to hear about the loss of your love. We have a video on our TikTok where it shows what tools we use and what to buy. You would need all three types of stripping knives, as each one is used for a different area. For example: the fine tooth is for details around the face, where as coarse would be used more on the jacket (if required). Hope that helps 🐾
Would you strip an irish wolfhound in the same manner? My puppy is about 8.5mo and I've been noticing that I can pull out little tufts of her hair. And when do you know when to stop? Just when the hair doesn't come out? I'm slightly concerned that my knife is cutting her coat.
That’s correct, our lovely Irish Wolfhound are suitable hand stripping! The technique is the same, of course, the style and the lines are different for every breed. It is hard to explain when to stop, you want to leave enough coat to be between 1 and 3 inches long. You want to avoid balding them or seeing skin. Their coat should look very natural. Breaking the coat is a possibility when the technique is not correct. Make sure to pull in a straight line avoiding wrist movements. I hope this has helped! Good luck ❤️
I am long time IT owner....two previous (not at same time) that had a long life and now have a 3 1/2 year old girl that is the best of them all. Extremely affectionate yet protective of the family.....she doesn't like it if my wife or I scold one of our own kids for something ;-) I have always hand stripped myself or had a groomer do it. Extremely hard to find a groomer that knows or is willing to hand strip and clippers will ruin the coat. What is thre best way to know when the coat is at the optimum point for stripping? I usually go by when it is coarest but not sure if that is correct.
They are amazing companions! The hair cycle varies from dog to dog, based on their environment and hormonal levels. When ready the coat is harsh, wiry, and it is very easy to pull out.
With Irish Wolfhounds the goal is to maintain a natural look and therefore there are not these types of signs indicating a specific area to be taken tight. Ideally, you want to have a rugged look and pluck unruly hairs that are distracting from the outline of the dog 🐾
Hey Claire! So pleased you enjoyed the video! The owner requested a little bit of length and also a fluffy tail. We didn’t mention it on the video hoping someone would ask. Great spot!
@@clairemacgregor4676 not at all! By stripping the tail you are absolutely achieving the breed standard look. I agree, they look so smart. Thank you so much Claire!
😂 I was wondering the same thing. Was so happy with your great explanation (especially the beard tip. My IT is lying next to me right now and I checked the position of the darker hair! How interesting!!) But then the video ended and I saw the tail. Haha but you explained it👍 thank you for the video
I have quite a few stripping blades but not as wide as yours. I striped my Airedales and Rough Jack Russell’s for years. What brand and where can I get a stripping comb like the one you use. Love it. Thanks in advance
Wow the difference between this and people who shave (I heard about this technique watching a video about an Airedale terrier who was shaved once too often) and they talked about this and how the coat looks amazing if it is kept up this way.
So no powder- stones or anything needed ?I don’t want to buy any unnecessary products. As I have seen so many ways of hand stripping. I’m confused. Thank you
Stripping can be done without any tools. However, using chalk powder and stripping knives eases the process. Chalk powder helps grip the dog's coat better, while stripping knives provide an effective way to remove dead hair, reducing the time and effort required while ensuring a polished and professional finish.
We had an Irish Terrier for 12 years. They can be calm, but also can be feisty! They are one of the more potentially feisty of the terriers. Consistent training with positive reinforcement and kindness is sensible if you are considering getting an Irish Terrier. Do lots of homework first. They are amazing!
Thank you! We currently don’t have a hand strip westie in our salon but I can show a video of me doing a clipped breed standard trim. Is that something you’d like to see?
Do you ever hand strip Golden Retrievers? Can one strip undercoat while leaving guard hairs intact? My service dog loves to be groomed and I inadvertently balded him once with a Furminator. He enjoyed the attention so much I lost track. Looking for a gentler way to de-shed so he doesn't give off floofs while he works.
@@hackneybarkers It's a wonderful bonding experience - you're right. I had a bit of time outdoors today waiting for someone. I took off his vest and hand stripped his coat (with just my fingers). It was great. I didn't have to worry about stopping while he still had hair. His coat _literally_ sparkles now. (Really - his top coat has glittery strands. So cool. Thanks for the tips. 🥰
Hey! As long as they have got a good undercoat and wire hair they’re good to go. Even if it’s for a light strip to encourage growth and get them used to the grooming world.
Thank you for your question ❤️ The answer is, it depends! While we generally recommend clipping for all neutered dogs, we evaluate each case individually, as every dog is unique. Some dogs can maintain a nice, wiry coat for quite some time after being neutered.
Hi, when the hair turns too soft and the dog is finding it uncomfortable to strip. The first thing I do is call the owner then I would use thinning scissors if it’s a small area or discuss clipping. 🐾
@@hackneybarkers Yep. The fur on his back gets so coarse when it's finally time to shed. And they are so tightly set that I can't even get to his undercoat without plucking them off first. And if I _don't_ then it's hairballs twice a day, everyday for weeks and weeks (or his stomach gets clogged up). Luckily it is, as you say, not painful when the hairs are ready to come off and my boy is very happy for the help 😊
