- Harry's House written & produced by Joni Mitchell | from the album The Hissing Of Summer Lawns (1975) | live from The Rosie O'Donnell Show (Nov/8/1996)
Heatwaves on the runway
As the wheels set down
He takes his baggage off the carousel
He takes a taxi into town
Yellow schools of taxi fishes
Jonah in a ticking whale
Caught up at the light in the fishnet windows
Of Bloomingdale's
Watching those high fashion girls
Skinny black models with raven curls
Beauty parlor blondes with credit card eyes
Looking for the chic and the fancy to buy
He opens up his suitcase
In the continental suite
And people twenty stories down
Colored currents in the street
A helicopter lands on the Pan Am roof
Like a dragonfly on a tomb
And business men in button downs
Press into conference rooms
Battalions of paper minded males
Talking commodities and sales
While at home their paper wives
And paper kids
Paper the walls to keep their gut reactions hid
Yellow checkers for the kitchen
Climbing ivy for the bath
She is lost in House and Gardens
He's caught up in Chief of Staff
He drifts off into the memory
Of the way she looked in school
With her body oiled and shining
At the public swimming pool ...
... Shining hair and shining skin
Shining as she reeled him in
To tell him like she did today
Just what he could do with Harry's House
And Harry's take home pay

I love the way Joni fashioned the guitar to fit her needs, with unorthodox tunings. Very original and captivating. Truly an icon of the 20th century.
Joni's catalog of music ranks up there with the very best. This woman has given the world so much to keep.
True!
@@SteenHolm134 no ranking her. She is in her own orbit
She can do no wrong!
For me, the best lyricist of all time. Storyteller and shamaness ....
To the apt "Storyteller and shamaness," I would add Poet.
I am obsessed with Joni's guitar tone. Three techniques/technologies contributed to her signature sound, especially later on in her career; her use of alternate tunings, her use of the JC-120, and the VG-8. Each one gave her guitar the chorus-like, droning quality that makes it so identifiable.
she made an error at 1:57.. but stepped right over it... because genius isnt perfect.. it is perfecting
She is even fascinating and fluid when she makes a mistake. I had to watch it a second time to marvel on how effortlessly she loops back into the corrected lyric.
Her guitar tone during this time period is so dreamy. So appropriately cinematic for the scale of "Harry's House".
Joni is the epitome of an artist. HUMBLE, inspired, joyful (& gosh so adorable).
Joni Mitchell in her 50s is mesmerizing. Reminds me of seeing Nick Lowe live, solo, and acoustic, in NYC in the mid-oughts. Just the man and his guitar: assured, mature, and at the height of his powers.
Joni appears to be in her prime of maturity here, with her beautifully played electric guitar to accompany her voice which at this time is like a goddess speaking. Her vocal control is so pristine and to perfection. Others here asked about the song being performed as if it was new, yet this was actually from her Hissing of Summer Lawns Album, over twenty years earlier, I believe about 1975. The track is Harry's House.
It caught the attention of the world, as it became the new epitome of her jazz style of singing. This live performance 20 years later after the release of that album is really one of the most fantastic live performances I think I've ever witnessed other than watching her live in 1979 here in the Portland Memorial coliseum, I walked up the aisle from my seat where my wife and I were sitting to a sold-out house, as I crouched in the aisle at the floor, with my college days 35 millimeter camera and telephoto lens, I used a high-speed transparency film. Looking up at the stage with her standing there, performing songs from her Hissing of Summer Lawns 1975, and Hejira 1976 albums. She has the presence of a goddess.
Mark Seibold Lucky You, i wish that I could have seen her.
Mark Seibold Great memory. Looking at her live performances on UA-cam over decades I defy anyone to find an instance where she was anything but cool and composed on stage or in a TV studio.
yes, glad that she progressed slowly, so she just got better , best, wow thanks Joni
Joni Mitchell..I am blessed to and Thankful to being living in this generations of time of your success in your music...I love that you and Laura Nyro did your own thing and style of music that you loved and I don't think it was done with the thoughts of wanting being a top 40 or top 60s type music,,,that to me is what makes an artist,,in music and your paintings...It's you,,,like it or leave it,,,I love both,,I love you,,, your music is wonderful...its like when I listen to your music I go into a trance,,,that i never want too come out of,,,i never and will never get tired of listening to your music,,,If I had only had all of your albums and CD's ...that is all the music I'd need..Well I do have them,,,and they are cherished deeply...
Coyote is one of the mind expanding tunes! Especially on "The Last Waltz".
Even Prince was in awe of her. Joni, at the zenith of her powers....
As was Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings and he also covered 'Sex Kills ' on his 'Wall Street Voodoo' album.
She told us ‘we are billion year old carbon’. And we get to be on the planet at the same time as her. A win there or what?
No Regret Coyote the human lifespan is much too short. We should remain young for 50 years or more.Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Deep
You are SO correct on that! We are quite lucky to enjoy her many talents. She makes me feel like a slacker.
She will always be my Fav , ... The most interesting person , Love Joni , & her work !!!
I'm so privileged to have lived in the era of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, Stills, Dylan, Garcia.....and all the other geniuses.
At this time in her life is where I think she was her most gorgeous. Don't we all wish that when we hit the zenith of our looks we just stay there? I've always admired her talent in writing, arranging and in conveying her songs so artfully. She's truly a once in a generation artist. I wonder if she ever thought she would be?
This song is pretty sophisticated for TV !
WAY AHEAD OF HER TIME GENIUS......
Yes mate, an interesting choice for T.V for sure.
@@DENIEL381 She wasn`t ahead of her time. Most everyone was behind her.
yes...VERY!
Agreed! Kudos to Rosie. 🌹
For me that was the centerpiece song of the album, HIssing of Summer Lawns, which I still consider to be Joni's masterpiece.
One thing I remember back there at Christmastime of 1975 after it was released - everybody had a copy, and almost every woman I knew at the time........surgically removed the song within the song....reached in and delicately "snip snip", like removing an offending tumor from an otherwise healthy organ...
Only in this case, it was the opposite. That Centerpiece song was the very heart of the darkness, that brilliant piece of raw irony that Joni used for a purpose. The larger body of the entire song told the whole story.
For me, the main reason why The Hissing of Summer Lawns is her masterpiece - is that it's her first album (lucky 7th, overall) in which she does not whine about romance. She comes out strong, proud, brilliant as a diamond, and never quits. The closest she gets to her old ways is Shades of Scarlet Conquering - and that's about the incredible Vivien Leigh - not herself.
But then, the preceding 6 albums all had their gems and their charms. I was just really ready for Summer Lawns.
And yeah - a pretty bold and brave thing to tackle that song with nothing but a (what is that? a Strat? SG Standard? Knockoff?)
- and have to leave all that fabulous production aside for live.
I thought the song was about Vivien Leigh too.
It’s a Parker Fly…with piezo pickups as wheel as electric. Percent is probably a blending of those two pick ups or pick up systems and whatever reverb she’s using and maybe one other effect.
did the song being called Centerpiece give that away lol?
That guitar tone is killer
I love seeing her so happy.
Joni is major league cool. Was and always will be.
Rosie did great w this interview - wish celebs stayed this friendly over time!!
lucid, brilliant, exquisitie
Live on TV? Damn.
"Helicopter lands on the Pan Am roof like a dragonfly on a tomb."
I always loved that line.
yep, and just like that dragonfly, there is someone higher in scale than helicopter. I feel ya
Such an amazing woman. Hard to believe she keeps getting better with time. How do you improve on perfection?
A musical genius! Really liking the Joni tuning and use of the flange effect. One of my faves too. Thankyou Joni for sharing your gift so wisely!!
OMG she is such a beautiful vocalist!
What a gracious and talented individual Joni is!
A masterpiece song from one of my top 5 albums. Was fortunate enough to see her live in 1983.
Joni and Rosie do comedy -- what planet are we on ?? 🤣
"Don't mix Altoids with Ricola..."
And they turn around _together_ to spit it out !!
HITS AND MISSES
NO MISSES JONI
ALL HITS ALL THE TIME... 💕
The first four syllables gave me butterflies.
Every song by Joni was a delight to listen too always couldn’t wait until each of her albums came out a brilliant singer songwriter a genius and her art work is amazing!
I've always admired her writing. As she has grown older she has also become a remarkable vocalist. Check out her performance of Both Sides Now at the tribute concert held in her honour in, I believe, 2000.
Her style - her moves! Hits and misses!
I'm Canadian and Joni is a Gem, just like Neil Young and all 4 members of The Band who are Canadian. :) I'm still good on Levon Helm and "The Hawks".
Coolest woman on the planet
Damn that guitar sounds good. Great to see her. Love that song.
the greatest of the great. joni mitchell I bow down to your artistry, sensitivity, melodic genius, and environmental concerns starting way back when. oh and you're beautiful too. thanks for posting this sonic boy
One of my favorites of Joni. I know this song well. Surely, even she would admit, not one of her best performances. It is in a different beat than from the "The Hissing....." and the opening word "Heatwaves" is almost lost because of her vocals issue. I love this song so much! In fact side two of The Hissing is possibly my favorite side of all of Joni's albums.
The greatest singer songwriter of my life/era.
Wonderful for Joni fans in England to be able to watch this as we never would have seen it on our tv networks - what a woman she is, there is no equal - well.. maybe our beloved Kate Bush?
One note, one chord & I am transported back to my college album(can you imagine that?), listening room where I 1st heard Joni & I knew, somehow, she saw into my heart & soul. Still happens till this very day ❤️
Great to see this given her current health crisis.
Joni you are so awesome. This album has always been one of my most favorite. (vis "Hissings....")
I love you Joan. Sigh.
this is Joni one day after her 53th birthday. She gets better with age. that sound just her and her open guitar
Ive always loved her style
so smooth
Awesome!
you wont recognise genius if it hits you in the face in a thousand lifetimes....it s just the way it is... and joni too was just having a good time..
The best person/musician, cutes babe so talented! I love you! Thank you so much
Omg this is So good!
Nice down to Earth interview! I imagine it might be a relief to a well loved person!
Love these chords. Joni Mitchell does an even better live version of this 2 years later for Painting with Words and Music.
A day after her birthday. A rough night? And so candid w/Rosie
My love
Wow! You really NAILED it! That was so good.
Wow- 18 years ago, already! I LOVE the album this song is from..why can't I remember the name? I'm getting old.
The song is from her 1975 album The Hissing Of Summer Lawns. I agree, it's a great album!
Thank you, sonicboy19!
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it! :)
MY ONLY WISH IS THAT SHE WOULD HAVE STOPPED SMOKING....PURE GENIUS SUCH A WONDERFUL LADY.
AS A PRO GUITARIST MYSELF.... SHE HAS A AMAZING GUITAR SOUND
My late friend helped her find her daughter, but in 1999. I met that daughter's boyfriend and he had a tale.
Do tell.
@@popoyaya Really. But I can imagine. Lots going on there
Llegará el día que bajen los Ángeles y nos digan; ustedes humanos tuvieron un Ángel entre ustedes, su nombre: Joni Mitchell
Parker fly guitar

She's a goddess now and forever 💗
This is my first time seeing The Rosie O'Donnell Show, and I can tell you she destroys this guest interview... every time it starts to get interesting, Rosie destroys it. She's a 1 person demolition crew.
Aw, come on, it wasn't that bad!
great sound. love to know the guitar and vocal processors she's working with.
She's playing a Parker Fly guitar through a Roland guitar synthesizer. The guitar connects to the synth with a 13 pin cord. She started using it because the synth alows her to play in various tunings without her having to change the string tension. The synth converts the string tone digitally.
No special vocal processing. Guitar is Roland VG-88 or VG-99.
These chords make me really "feel"..What is driving the difference? Is it fitting the lyrics into a shorter meter? I can't sing along to it....love you, Joni - I am praying you get better soon....xx
I think its the way she resolves chords and progression.... satisfying in an off-hand, solemn was
of this is Longboat Key☆~!
Wow. The voice a million cigarettes built.
That is not a good thing. I miss her beautiful former voice.
@@KSfan4ever All her voices have always been amazing.. From the yodel to the rasp
If for no other reason cigarettes should be removed from this world
joni has no computer and no mobile phone
The fucking best..period.
Joni looks so much like the David Bowie of STATION TO STATION/Thin White Duke that they could be separated at birth!
Does anyone know what tuning Joni uses here? I like this better than the album version.
i would also like to know this
has to be some form of open "d" in my opinion

Not a bad interview. Rosie was OK, too.
She forgot centerpiece.
Jim1971a That would cost money if she included it. She didn't write "Centrepiece."
Yeah, probably licensing reasons. "Centerpiece" is an old standard, not written by Joni Mitchell. Still it's a shame not to include it.
Rosie's like a female Jay Leno!
Nice Parker Fly guitar!
Post Dylan.
Joni played "The Rosie O'Donnell Show"?? Whatever for??? Didn't need the paycheck , did she???? And I really can't imagine Rosie's audience, uh, grooving, to that challenging song.
Oh my really? Uh, yet they did! Sounds like you are a bit challenged to even make a comment on this.
Joni beat Raekwon and Ghostface to cinematic rap
Joni, thumbs up. Rosie, not
Can’t stand the darn commercials cutting in. 😠
Then pony up for the no commercial option fool.
Then Rosie came and ruined the mood...
Turbulent Idigo (I think!).
Damn...can say it enough that I hate Rosie O'Donnell.
I can't listen to Joni anymore even though she was formative in my growing up. Her stance on Covid and trying to cancel Jo Rogan for speaking the truth has soured me for her for ever more. Goodbye Joni, you were a rebel. Now you are the establishment. How sad.
She was always a bit stupid about politics because she only ever followed mainstream media. She was never a real hippy. The hippies questioned authority and did their own research. They discovered (thanks to people like Ezra Pound, Eustace Mullins, Antony Sutton, etc.) that governments and political parties served a ruling class of criminal plutocrats; that the history taught in schools was false; that the news media served the interests of the plutocrats; that the money-system was a slave-system. The real hippies 'dropped out' to form an alternative society. Joni never did that. She was blind to all that. But it didn't stop her being a great artist.
Haha nobody cares about you or your opinion. How sad.
I’ve got to look into that. Thx
