  • BREAKING NEWS - Disappointment doesn't even begin to describe the amount of devastation when removing this classic car floor pan on the Disaster Datsun. Rust rust and more rust is what you can expect in this video, as well as majorly dreadful botched previous repairs!
    MORE BREAKING NEWS! We set fire to it, however: Latest vacancies for employment have just been released!
    Layered questionable previous botched repairs have left behind that orange metallic substance that most of us know as RUST!!! I still have nightmares about removing this floor pan...
    I Warned you it was bad! We got 3 shovels of rust from the floor pan alone.... there was rust...... everywhere....
    We also found a nice surprise lurking inside the rusty inner sill, why would someone put that there! DANGEROUS!
    I even found rust in my shoe! How did that get there!!! I will be picking this out of my clothes for days!
    Please subscribe and hit that like button... For my sanity!!! Should I carry on?
    Love rust? Why don't you check out the DISASTER Datsun playlist.... Lots more rust in there!!!

      I bought a used FIAT 131 in the 1980s. My brother and I spent a ton of time welding in metal panels. The car was so damn rusted it was unbelievable. The car was a beauty though; great engine and very nice interior.

    Ryan.... this is painful to watch so can imagine what it’s like there. Working on a 240z at the moment and took the plunge and got a rotisserie. Man it’s life-changing. Take a weekend and build one and you’ll never look back. This project really needs one. Plus it would be a nice project to film for others thinking about making one. Otherwise you are doing a sterling job. Chin up... and crack on!

    Learnt a trick off a posh German car-body builder - been using it all week & it works. Instead of cardboard he grabs a sheet of plain A4 paper, holds it in place with small magnets (I've been using little neodymium ones) & traces the ope with a dirty finger. (I always have a dirty finger to hand). That gives a REALLY precise template, cut it out with scissors & then bang onto the fresh sheet steel with the magnets - cut out, voila, precision fit panel.
    Far more accurate than cardboard & far easier to do. Works great for holes big & small. :-)

    • @jamesward5721
      @jamesward5721 Рік тому +1

      Doesn't work for entire floors..... :-) Been there, done that ^.. frequently.. EFFORT!

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration
      @yorkshirecarrestoration  Рік тому +2

      Good idea that, we have used paper before but we dont usually have it to hand. But very good for the smaller repairs where the paper fits, and like you say, it is more accurate!!!

    This is like an archaeological examination of car repair standards of the past 40 years. The evolution of car repairs and how things have improved and acceptable standards have changed significantly, each layer is a piece of automotive repair history. The majority of that would have been stick welded or oxy acetylene. No signs of any brazing so far.

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration
      @yorkshirecarrestoration  Рік тому +2

    I had a 1977 Datsun 280Z, everything was great until the rust started, it rusted out so fast even after stripping down and repainting the rust started again two years later. The question is would you have started it if you’d known what a disaster it was going to turn out to be? It’s going to be interesting to see you fabricate new cross members for the floor especially the one that appeared to carry the seat mountings. Are you going to brace it before you go any further with that sill repair as I can imagine the shell distorting if you take much more out….

    • @joescully566
      @joescully566 Рік тому +2

      My thoughts entirely stu. You would have thought if you knew how bad it was, it would have been scrapped. The good thing is no guilt for taking the restomod route, because it would be crushed by the majority of us.

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration
      @yorkshirecarrestoration  Рік тому +3

      Yes, we would have done. I wont give up on this project and no matter how bad it gets, we will still continue. Both of them seat mounting cross members will be good as new once I've finished with them. And yes, i have already filmed half of the next video, and I have put some bracing across from the tunnel to the top of the sill. Thanks!

All the rust will be gone🎉 Enjoyed the video!! Little bit at a time, we will get them!!

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration
      @yorkshirecarrestoration  Рік тому +1

      Haha there was just rust everywhere, just had to show the boot filled with Rotsun rust :D. There was just so much rust on the floor, that throwing the pieces back at it didn't really make much more of a mess. And unfortunately it didn't work when I threw the new floor pan in at the end. Somehow I though it would be fixed, but it isn't :( haha! Yep, at some point all the rust will be gone and we can get to mechanical stuff and prepping for paint! Long ways to go though. I'd say buy replacement floorpans (they're available) but you've got all the tools to make them yourself anyway.

      @Ragnar8504 Рік тому +2

      Absolutely. The original part started rotting and no one bothered cutting anything out, just plated over the top to get the car through another MOT. And by the looks of it they just grabbed some flat sheet and hammered it around the part they wanted to repair rather than shaped the piece on the bench.

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration
      @yorkshirecarrestoration  Рік тому +3

    The backing track says it all: "Run away, run away'". Strip out the parts and crush the rest, it's not worth your time and expertise. It's not just crispy, parts have turned to powder. Entertaining watch though.

      They've repaired so much on this car they're well past the point of no return. The entire offside and most of the engine bay area are done. Since they're creating most of the panels themselves it's not even really a matter of money, just time and energy.

    I honestly don’t know your line.. That is that the amount of work required is Beyond Economic Repair & that materials and man-hours are a higher costing than the return of the sale of the car. OR there is no line, it’s about returning the car to its former glory and about the car itself. The satisfaction of getting a disaster passed its MOT and making it last for another 20+ years.
