My father is a Businessman and my Mother is a principal in a Government school. During the lockdown my father was sitting at home continuously for all the 6 months but my mother was getting her salary on time. At that time we all realised that how important it is for women to work. If my mother would have been a housewife our income would have been zero during the lockdown and we would have been forced to cut down our expenses at least by 10% but thanks that my mother is working our lockdown went smoothly 😑
Good example. All women should have sufficient qualifications/ skills to be able to work. The domestic work at home should be divided as well to prevent overburdened working/ studying women. That's the only healthy model I see.

Marriage is not a problem in itself. The problem is patriarchy, because of which a woman needs to take permission from in laws to work after marriage. Similarly, motherhood is also not a problem. The problem is with the lack of maternity and paternity leaves and childcare policies in the organised and unorganised sector.

Developed countries are famous for having many part time jobs for women. No, those have not fallen down on them from the sky, people had to fight to get them. First, many simply started sharing a full time job with a "saheli". :-) ( And one more thing: In developed countries people have understood that motherhood lasts only about 17-18 years in the roughly 70 years' lifespan of a woman. ) ( Or does anybody here feel it's necessary to pamper your 18 years old child, with 24/7 presence and all, as if it were a toddler? :-D )

I read an article in a newspaper that said Educated non-working women are on the rise since the '90s. Very unfortunate. We are missing a huge workforce that may contribute to our country's development. :(

This will not happen, but there should be new laws introduced to give women their due in a household where they do domestic work. It is only at the time of a divorce that a woman's right to maintenance is acknowledged and that too is done in a manner that causes much injustice to go around. For a woman who chooses to not wreck the household, there is no maintenance and there is no freedom. This is wrong. Men will definitely revolt if a law mandating a 25% - 50% income share to the unemployed wife is introduced by law and so such a law will not come into being, but at least there is an accepted economic calculation of the "financial worth of a stay at home mother". Google is your friend. It's very enlightening.

The major reason is parents are afraid to let their daughters go outside their localities for jobs. The safety issue. Talking about my own family, I want to go distant places but my mother isn't ready to leave me. Say now if there's anything that's bigger than this issue. India is the worst country for women. However great our religion and culture might, or might not, have been, the western socio-economic systems that allow women to live free independent lives are absolutely a must in India, until we come up with a better solution than feminism (if one exists). Marriage should be completely by choice, live-in / live-out whatever should be by mutual consent and if a woman decides she should ho ahead and have a child on her own using a sperm bank. If men can adopt kids (until recently in Indian history) in the name of ashram, guru, or orphanage, single motherhood should also be unremarkable and common. This is unfortunately not common yet because even the rich woman wants a father to show for her child. In general, the central problem of all human suffering is the inability to experience the world from the point of view of another human. We have patchwork solutions for this like books, poetry, art, songs, movies, beliefs, stories and so on, but nothing beats the real experience. And we do not mandate that the rich live like the poor for a few weeks every year (Ramzan would have come close, but people feast at night which defeats the purpose.) or that men live like women for a few weeks. Imagine if every husband could experience life as his wife for a few weeks every year. Luckily, women can experience what it is to live like a man to some extent in some places in our country and in many countries in the world today. There's also the long social trauma of colonisation by the British, due to which we still feel the need to be richer than our peers and to show off by competing in a status and prestige race throughout our lives. This prevents a large amount of thought and resources from going into social reform (for example, cooperatives, the engine of equitable growth and equality), which would otherwise have followed due to so much prosperity in the past 3 decades, and we would have rid a larger part of society from patriarchy's grip. So we are generally limited to discussing on online platforms, rather than forming action groups and actually doing things, because we each need to get that new TV or car or AC second apartment by next year, so no time to do good things. Many factors, long and slow reform process, and punctuated by regressions due to things like the current personality cult of a few politicians.

What needs to change is that household work should be divided equally among all family members, only then can women go out to work tension free. The pandemic has made some families realize that household work is not that easy. Doing the same thing every day can also be a major task to finish. But this doesn't hold true for the rest of them. Men still don't contribute to household work and think that doing these tasks are embarrassing for them. This is something that we need to learn from developed countries, where people don't hire maids and divide the work among the family. While a lot of Indians are complaining that they have to do all the work because of lockdown, their relatives living overseas have been doing it themselves for years. Hope something positive comes out of this pandemic, and those people who have recently started contributing to household work keep on doing it and gender biases keep on reducing. Cause it's not fun to study all these years just to become a housewife after getting married.
What you can also learn from abroad is that women there are not necessarily looking for someone earning 2-5 times more than their own salary and huge property. When they both bring equal financial value, then they share household work too. When the man earns and woman stays at home, she manages everything at home, including cleaning utensils, floors etc. for which Indian women have maids, but still crib all day long.

A look at the portrayal of women in 80s and 90s TV serials (Udaan, Aarohan, Seahawks, Astitva, Hum log, Shanti) which were more progressive and today's TRP focused serials - is the reflection of our society.

Because women are working more hours than men, sadly their works are not valued and paid! The problem boils down to the mindset of Indians towards girls and women. The time a girl is born she is considered a burden and responsibility to the family, so many Indian families do not think it’s important to spend resources on her education, but to save for her dowry. Indian traditions, culture, practice are biased oppressive against women and the Indian society is deeply rooted on these norms and patriarchal values. Beti bachao, Beti padhao is a failed mission. Until and unless women feel safe inside and outside of their homes in India, India’s economic growth is a far fetched dream!

And also the more female the participates in jobs, the higher authority they will have in their family which can help us control the birth rate. Brazil and Argentina with poor conditions similar to India have low birth rates because the women are empowered there.

I'm a clinical psychologist. Worked for 3 years before marriage. Dropped out of the workforce after marriage. Now my children are too small. There is too much house work. And my husband is also not supportive.

Those who say "housework helps GDP growth" are not aware of this fact: That in most families these decisions are not made using rationality and logic. Usually families (sadly in 2020, continued) decide on the basis of "rivaaj", customs, and traditions, no matter the decision makes sense or not.
Call me old school but why is a homemaker looked down upon. Why is it somewhat less dignified when a woman chooses to shape the next generation of our society which her own hands. I happen to have some of interest for Italy's society. As far as I know, only 3-4 decades ago young Italian women got married at 20, (except those who were doctors or lawyers, true), then gave birth to several children, sat at home, and thus became fat. Now, in 2020, they choose to get married at 30 or 35!

@@Cryboutet If both are working then they can hire someone to take care of the household chores. Anyways. Household chores don’t take much time if one buys the proper tools, washing machine, stove, dishwasher. With such modern tools, a working couple can easily take care of these.

Again these are high skilled jobs and according to this video LFPR is decreasing because more women are getting tertiary education (this means around 5-10 later Telecom and Finance sectors will have a much bigger much bigger women share) + society

And if a woman doesn't want to become a mother in developed countries, she can access contraception. I'm an unmarried woman and my doctor prescribed me contraception without any judgement. Hence I'm able to work unsocial hours and earn money for my boyfriend and I.
Also that 16 year olds can work part tine so children become independent quickly there. Here most are lazy & pretty dependant on their parents so anyways

(By the way, I have noticed a bit more narrow-mindedness in India's narrative, since 2008 or 2010, about the role women are supposed to play. This is not ensuring financial freedom for women even after earning. Physical and mental stress increases by 10 fold in working women. Who wants that??

Not even any girl going to marry them. But, for girls, this isn't the case. If a girl earns it is good. If not, she can marry a rich guy and even become choosy despite not earning anything. This is the benefit a girl has! 3)Those girls who want to do job, firstly, they prefer local jobs (even government facilitates women by posting them in their home town which isn't in case of males). Secondly, urban & semi-urban women prefer mostly blue & gold collar safe & secure jobs like doctor, engineer, teacher, army/police, public service..etc which are limited in number. If you consider urban women who are mostly educated, how many of them are willingly to do jobs like carpenter, bus driver, plumber, construction worker, blacksmith, goldsmith, diver, builder.. etc? But, in case of men, there is no choice.. They have to do good jobs otherwise even have to work in gutter to earn money for his family. But, this compulsion isn't there for women. Instead of doing these sweating jobs, they choose to remain in household. However, they are contributing their family in lots of ways. Some by helping the husband in his profession, some by making papad, pickle, oil, sweets... etc and some by becoming the finance minister of home.... Just because some women aren't working outside, that shouldn't overlook their massive contribution to home including upbringing of children and blessing them with good values & morals. There are not many things in our hand like roads, better public transport like metro, better protection of women and better education for women. These are work of govt. But still there are few things that we can do like encourage females in our houses and around our houses for work and let go of this regressive mindset that household work is only for women.

My father is a Businessman and my Mother is a principal in a Government school.
During the lockdown my father was sitting at home continuously for all the 6 months but my mother was getting her salary on time.
At that time we all realised that how important it is for women to work.
If my mother would have been a housewife our income would have been zero during the lockdown and we would have been forced to cut down our expenses at least by 10% but thanks that my mother is working our lockdown went smoothly 😑

I'm so happy to see so many men in the comment section supporting women's rights. It makes me restore my faith in humanity. If we keep working towards a more equal society we will definitely see some change.
However great our religion and culture might, or might not, have been, the western socio-economic systems that allow women to live free independent lives are absolutely a must in India, until we come up with a better solution than feminism (if one exists). Marriage should be completely by choice, live-in / live-out whatever should be by mutual consent and if a woman decides she should ho ahead and have a child on her own using a sperm bank. If men can adopt kids (until recently in Indian history) in the name of ashram, guru, or orphanage, single motherhood should also be unremarkable and common. This is unfortunately not common yet because even the rich woman wants a father to show for her child.
In general, the central problem of all human suffering is the inability to experience the world from the point of view of another human. We have patchwork solutions for this like books, poetry, art, songs, movies, beliefs, stories and so on, but nothing beats the real experience. And we do not mandate that the rich live like the poor for a few weeks every year (Ramzan would have come close, but people feast at night which defeats the purpose.) or that men live like women for a few weeks. Imagine if every husband could experience life as his wife for a few weeks every year. Luckily, women can experience what it is to live like a man to some extent in some places in our country and in many countries in the world today.
There's also the long social trauma of colonisation by the British, due to which we still feel the need to be richer than our peers and to show off by competing in a status and prestige race throughout our lives. This prevents a large amount of thought and resources from going into social reform (for example, cooperatives, the engine of equitable growth and equality), which would otherwise have followed due to so much prosperity in the past 3 decades, and we would have rid a larger part of society from patriarchy's grip. So we are generally limited to discussing on online platforms, rather than forming action groups and actually doing things, because we each need to get that new TV or car or AC second apartment by next year, so no time to do good things.

What needs to change is that household work should be divided equally among all family members, only then can women go out to work tension free. The pandemic has made some families realize that household work is not that easy. Doing the same thing every day can also be a major task to finish. But this doesn't hold true for the rest of them. Men still don't contribute to household work and think that doing these tasks are embarrassing for them.
This is something that we need to learn from developed countries, where people don't hire maids and divide the work among the family.
While a lot of Indians are complaining that they have to do all the work because of lockdown, their relatives living overseas have been doing it themselves for years.
Hope something positive comes out of this pandemic, and those people who have recently started contributing to household work keep on doing it and gender biases keep on reducing.
Cause it's not fun to study all these years just to become a housewife after getting married.

What you can also learn from abroad is that women there are not necessarily looking for someone earning 2-5 times more than their own salary and huge property. When they both bring equal financial value, then they share household work too. When the man earns and woman stays at home, she manages everything at home, including cleaning utensils, floors etc. for which Indian women have maids, but still crib all day long.

A look at the portrayal of women in 80s and 90s TV serials (Udaan, Aarohan, Seahawks, Astitva, Hum log, Shanti) which were more progressive and today's TRP focused serials - is the reflection of our society.

Because women are working more hours than men, sadly their works are not valued and paid! The problem boils down to the mindset of Indians towards girls and women. The time a girl is born she is considered a burden and responsibility to the family, so many Indian families do not think it’s important to spend resources on her education, but to save for her dowry. Indian traditions, culture, practice are biased oppressive against women and the Indian society is deeply rooted on these norms and patriarchal values. Beti bachao, Beti padhao is a failed mission. Until and unless women feel safe inside and outside of their homes in India, India’s economic growth is a far fetched dream!

1) Rural areas - men & women participate equally in earning outside as there is a need for money for survival.
2) urban and semi urban areas - You need to understand that men have to do jobs or run businesses otherwise nobody is going to care for them. Not even any girl going to marry them.
But, for girls, this isn't the case. If a girl earns it is good. If not, she can marry a rich guy and even become choosy despite not earning anything. This is the benefit a girl has!
3)Those girls who want to do job, firstly, they prefer local jobs (even government facilitates women by posting them in their home town which isn't in case of males).
Secondly, urban & semi-urban women prefer mostly blue & gold collar safe & secure jobs like doctor, engineer, teacher, army/police, public service..etc which are limited in number.
If you consider urban women who are mostly educated, how many of them are willingly to do jobs like carpenter, bus driver, plumber, construction worker, blacksmith, goldsmith, diver, builder.. etc?
But, in case of men, there is no choice.. They have to do good jobs otherwise even have to work in gutter to earn money for his family. But, this compulsion isn't there for women. Instead of doing these sweating jobs, they choose to remain in household.
However, they are contributing their family in lots of ways. Some by helping the husband in his profession, some by making papad, pickle, oil, sweets... etc and some by becoming the finance minister of home.... Just because some women aren't working outside, that shouldn't overlook their massive contribution to home including upbringing of children and blessing them with good values & morals. Try to think beyond economics!

This is baseless to say that women are not working because family income is increasing. If income is increasing it also means it's creating a bigger markets, and bigger markets means more needs. I want to inform you about a very big issue in india about MICA CHILD LABOUR. mica market in the world is very big especially in beauty industry and have many uses in other industries and India has largest deposits in the world but most the extraction and trading is done illegally by mica mafia they use children for doing it pls make a video on it this will increase the understanding of the common people about their mica induced products

There are not many things in our hand like roads, better public transport like metro, better protection of women and better education for women. These are work of govt. But still there are few things that we can do like encourage females in our houses and around our houses for work and let go of this regressive mindset that household work is only for women.
One good thing about your channel is you don't just focus on "mainstream" topics. We need to bring back conscious to important subjects like this and people will realise that what are the more important things when they vote next time
I wonder why you did not consider women's safety, social bias against women as major demotivations. And the factors you mentioned why am I not seeing a comparison with other countries you mentioned initially?
It is strange you don't find
bias against women in a society where females are killed even before they are born. And when a crime happens against women the police does not even register an FIR and preaches women on schedule to come out of their homes and dress. Where woman focusing on career is called "videshi sanskar wali", where the PM says when a girl is born plant some expensive trees so that when she is ready for marriage you can sell the tree to marry her off.
Looks like you are trying to say women are not working because Indians are becoming rich because number people earning Rs. 250/- has increased. Sir please consider inflation as well, what you could purchase with Rs 250 in earlier time you cannot purchase it now.
You have mentioned females spend more time searching for job than males. Wonder why you did not find it interesting to know the reasons? what could be the reason that a man is ready to take any job available but women think 10 times before taking up a job even as she wants to take job??? any guess, hint security, maybe.
You mentioned women look for job nearby? But you are not interested to know why?? could be multiple reasons, but which one is prominent?
You mentioned U shape - why women are not comfortable to walk into a not so highly skilled job? any comparison with other countries?
