So Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude fight versions of themselves that are mostly similar to how they are but with one key difference each. Dimitri is more bloodthirsty and SUPER hates Edelgard, Edelgard is more inflexible and Claude is a trust based risktaker. They all reflect the *antagonist* versions of themselves in 3 houses. Claude due to his time at the academy learns about his fellow GD members and can trust them better and because of his shortened time at the academy this trust doesn't sink in and he goes full fire emblem wyvern king/general(like Travant/Michalis/Narcien) archetype and fodders his men. Given the context of fire emblem in general it's nice to see Claude actually play out some of the tropes of his archetype in a way that makes sense but I get the "Not my Claude!" Chants

I know it would have been a lot more work, but I really wish you could be the deciding factor on whether Claude goes with the Empire or Kingdom. I find it so weird that in the Kingdom storyline, Claude works with Dimitri against the Empire, and in the Empire storyline, Claude works with Eddy against Dimitry. But in his own campaign, he always sides with the Empire.
I think that he is a realist, so it would be cool if your actions in the battles shift Claude from Empire or Kingdom. I really did not like that after fighting on the Bridge, we just retreat when Ferdinand appeared with reinforcements. I was on a NG+, I should have been allowed to go kick his ass to start a different storyline

@@santiagogaviriasuarez7541 Im aware of the story reasons, but I'm saying thematically it does not work. My point is that in the Empire and Kingdom stories, Claude and the Alliance are the wildcards that can change the fortune of the war, so that should reflect in the Alliance story where your actions can shift them to either side.
Maybe make it harder to join the Kingdom, like you have to perform extremely well and defeat multiple commanders to make the Kingdom seem more attractive.

Yeah not gonna lie... Claude was a great character and the Golden Deer house boasts some of the funnest people... This route left a bad taste in my mouth by the end of it. This was the first route I chose and it felt like... as you shown... It was Edelgard's route not Claude's... Very odd saying that...
    Also Spoilers....
He tries to convince Dimitri killing Rhea is the right choice in Azure Gleam and only gives up on this at the very end... I think... He looks at Rhea... pauses in doubt... then looks back at Dimitri and joins the applause.
My feeling on Golden Wildfire will always be bitter at the end but sweet on the journey as I genuinely loved the characters. But Claude felt like the Antagonist instead of a Protagonist. Rhea in this route wasn't even built up as a villain nor did she synergize well as Claude's nemesis in any way. The whole thing felt completely impersonal making it more a kin to a cruel Witch Hunt then any meaning giving this route in my personal opinion the worst end goal enemy of all 7 paths in 3 Houses and 3 hopes.
Very few times will I ever actually consider this... but Claude despite his good intentions felt like THE BAD GUY in his own tale.

I think the main reason is that since Byleth wasn’t there, and things changed, Claude just looked at everything on the surface. I don’t mind it though since not all leaders make the right decisions, and Claude basically became exactly what Edelgard called him out on in Houses. Someone who can’t be a leader because he doesn’t know the history or how their system works. Granted Edelgard doesn’t either.

I believe here we see an unseasoned Claude doing his best with what he is given.
In Three Houses, all the groundwork he puts here is already laid out for him. Dimitri is gone and the kingdom is basically in ruins, Adrestia has removed Rhea from the central church and the central church is no more; scattered. The Empire is the top power in all Fodlan. So to reach his goal, he only has to focus on the Empire to remake Fodlan as he sees fit.
As it's mentioned in one of the conversations, Claude only sides with the Empire to help further his goal of breaking away or eventually curshing them to remake the world. But here he has all sides to consider, the Empire trying to crush Rhea and the church, attacking both the Kingdom and Alliance. Dimitri is alive and well leading the kingdom and harboring Rhea and the others.
As a master schemer, it always seemed like Claude wanted the Kingdom and Empire to do the dirty work and he just comes in and swoops everyone and everything. But unable to accomplish this, he makes practical decisions that do question his morality, like letting Randolph die, but we can look at him practically too. He isn't from Fodlan and doesn't understand the world the others live in. So to him, instead of just accepting things for what they are, he ultimately tries to shape the world around him knowing it would be a one size fits all situation, hopefully. And maybe it wouldn't be so bad to start over but it kind of backfires when even Edlegard herself says they should just remove Rhea and not kill her.
I suppose to Claude, the world is a chess board and you play the game well or you lose.

I feel like the biggest problem with Golden Wildfire is that we don't really see Rhea being an antagonist that much. I think it totally makes sense that Claude wants to get rid of her- she keeps Fodlan isolationist, she imposes religious absolutism, and her existence perpetuates the war. But except the last one, we never really see that like we do in Three Houses. Unless you already hated Rhea, it's hard to really get on board with Claude's goal.
Rhea shows a decent amount of honor in this route, fighting in the Talitean Plains instead of burning Fhirdiad like in Crimson Flower. She also shows genuine care for Cyril, an outsider that nonetheless treasured his place in Fodlan, which might have given Claude pause (is there unique dialog if you send Claude against him? I didn't do that). Maybe they were going for a savvy, calculating political genius Claude, which they succeeded at, but I'd still like to feel better about killing a final boss. (I do really like the political game where Dimitri abandons her to fight the empire in the west, a clever bit of statecraft that let Dimitri keep his honor intact while achieving the same goal as handing her over.)

    • @daz1543

Probably should point out... There was basically no avoiding war with Faerghus.
Yes, the goal of the Federation is to take out the Church. The Church, of whom is currently under Faerghus's protection. In other words, they literally can't attack the church without war against the Kingdom. However, unlike the Empire that sought to conquer and unify, the Federation only wanted Rhea gone and would pull out soon as it was done. Doing so would leave the Kingdom standing, and takes away the very thing that legitimizes Edelgard's war, making it difficult for her to continue to conquer due to internal political pressure, and also retaining the Kingdom's independence: If she wants to turn on them, it would both be difficult, and Claude would have far more leverage in negotiation.
Claude himself even points out: They could just help them conquer, but they'd get the short end of the stick in negotiating the land, and Edelgard would just attempt to vassalize them anyways.

People say that three hopes Claude is so out of character, but to me it shows how much in character it is for him, in three houses when he has byleth as his professor he basically has the church’s backing to make his dream to open fodlan up to the rest of the world, but in three hopes due to never meeting byleth he basically has to brute force his way into making his dream become real, and since he doesn’t have the church’s backing he would have to deal with Rhea/Seiros in the future cause she literally wants fodlan to be isolated. I will admit during the peaceful time at the officers academy Rhea’s rule of the church is a necessary evil, but when the war starts that evil is no longer necessary and I feel like she should step down, but she is to stubborn that she won’t( the only reason she does in three houses Silver snow, Verdant wind, and Azure moon routes is because byleth is there and she’s weak/dying from being captured/wounded)

@O Reo I mean, yes and no. Claude only seems to side with the Kingdom or the Church only because Byleth is there. I mean, in SS, Claude's letter to Byleth literally goes that he doesn't even know why, but he feels he can trust Byleth. Even AM, Claude was only confident in placing trust in Dimitri only because Byleth was there.
Consider CF when Byleth sides with the Empire. If Claude really would be one to rather side with the Kingdom or Church, he'd have still joined them there. Yet instead, Claude ensures that the Alliance doesn't completely side with either nation, but makes a stage ready to give the Alliance up to Edelgard if she comes and he were to lose.
Even in SB, Claude only decides to betray the Empire and break their pact because Byleth is the one to convince him. And STILL, Claude chooses not to side with the Kingdom or Church but instead declares war on all of them.

Golden Wildfire, let's just randomly bumble about with no real aim in mind, and then eh, screw it join up with the Empire, because Claude deep down is a foreigner that is somehow allowed to become Alliance leader and wants to subvert and weaken Fhodlan.

Claude's goal is to keep Leicester independent, make peace with the Empire, unify it and take down Rhea. Goals achieved for him.
His side-mission is to keep Faerghus intact so the balance of power doesn't slide too far in the Empire's favor
Why do you make it seem like becoming the Alliance Leader is unknown? He's the only heir left of the last Alliance leader. It's not complicated

Contrary to the discourse of his path and his character, I happened to love what they did with Claude in this game. He's ALWAYS had these traits below the surface, but the circumstances in 3 Houses really didn't serve him well to show those traits. Edelgard also being more willing to form a pact with the Alliance in this game compared to 3 Houses also helped. Claude was never the biggest fan of Rhea and he lets that be known even in 3 Houses. In fact, a dialogue choice post reunion chapter gives Byleth the option to say "So is Rhea dead better for Fodlan?" or something along those lines. Claude gets support points up for that.

Claude has always felt out of place in the game. I get that's the whole point of his character, to have an outside perspective. I get he's supposed to be a schemer who shouldn't be trusted but it feels like they really twisted who he was in the first place. The fact that he doesn't even trust Hilda with his plans is pretty weird. Hilda has been shown to be his closest ally even just durning the academy phase so why wouldn't he trust her in three hopes? I get his reasoning for some of his ideas but his plans in three hopes just make absolutely no sense.

Edelgard basically pre-empted what Claude intended from the beginning: to dethrone the Church, and unify Fodlan by sword. Three Hopes just makes more explicit what Three Houses already hinted at.

I really do like what they did with Claude's character in this game. He's able to really express his own character flaws that he always had, but people mistakenly think that he's flawless in 3H and did nothing wrong. People are angry that Claude would side with the Empire and think that he never should, but why is that when Claude also opposes the Central Church? He admitted in 3H that he'd be glad if Rhea died and sees her as the big problem. Claude coveted the Sword of the Creator, a weapon known to solo armies and cleave mountains, in 3H as well. He even saw Edelgard's war in 3H as an opportunity for him.
3Hopes is people's wake-up call that Claude is not some pure-hearted lad. He's a man with his own ambitions that wishes to install his own beliefs in.

to be honest three hopes Claude was just so out of character for him whould have made way more sense to ally with dimitri to push back edelgard and as the final true enemy to kill Thales and then after negotiating with edelgard restoring peace to fodlan or something along these lines

    • @rieganel7781

In GW, it wouldn't make sense to ally with Dimitri to fight Edelgard. He doesn't need Dimitri to achieve peace peace for Leicester. He achieved peace on his own for Leicester. His agenda doesn't include deposing Edelgard, his agenda includes deposing Rhea so using Edelgard as a distraction while sends a strike team to kill Rhea makes sense

This is long so bear with me...
Besides Shahid being a clown this video isn't accurate. Claude isn't particularly fond of any religion and particular god(s), especially one like The Church of Seiros considering after Rhea made powerful allies in Adrestia and Faerghus in the past the religion spread and gained enough followers that some of it's teachings had influence in the governments and laws of Fodlan, they become dominant over all other religions and some of their zealots use their dogma to continually oppress others and their religious beliefs.
Adrestia was the aggressor in this war and the Church of Seiros and it's militia sought refuge within Faerghus, and so to achieve Claude's aims independently it was going to be a prolonged battle of attrition and one which Leicester could not afford to wage by launching a counterattack and traveling deep into Adrestian soil as a enemy. Leicester is not only the smallest region with the least military might, it is also most internally divided region amongst it's leaders, had a troubled history of a battle of territorial independence with Faerghus, and was not likely to stave off continued assaults from Adrestia and Almyra rogues who may have been loyal to Shahid if they did not act.
So Claude agreed to the armistice with Edelgard and Adrestia and became allies in hopes of keeping the people and territories of Leicester safe from war on their land and a better shot at being able to get to Rhea and oust her and the Church of Seiros from Fodlan. It wasn't the most "noble" choice he could have made but it was the least risky option he had and one that could help him end the war more quickly and achieve his goals. While Rhea isn't at fault for the Crest system considering she didn't create it or the Hero's Relics and promote them, at the same time she isn't completely innocent either considering she didn't adamantly oppose them in general, or the Fodlandi using Crest heritage for bigoted purposes, out of fear of the existence and origins of the Nabateans being exposed. Claude gave Rhea the option to flee and live a life of exile outside of Fodlan in the end, but Rhea chose to fight to the death in a attempt to keep her and The Church of Seiros' stranglehold.
Randolf's death isn't Claude's fault because Randolf is a somewhat incompetent leader who can't even hold his own in a battle. Catherine gave him a chance to surrender but he refused and paid with his life. Besides Randolf tried to kill Claude and Leicester's army earlier during the war in a optional skirmish and they let him leave with his life then. He should have took that as a sign to seek a new position in the war effort and not get himself killed. Randolf was a hypocrite anyway.
Claude killed Shahid because Shahid refused to see the error of his ways and surrender, he was leading thousands of Almyrans to their deaths and because of the growing resentment in most of Almyra due to his power hungry nature and incompetence. Claude also didn't want his poor behavior to reflect even more negatively on his family and friends within Almyra and in Fodlan in Leicester.
Sylvain's dad was a unfortunate casualty of the war, but he willingly laid down his life and technically didn't die in vain since Felix and Rodrigue escaped.

Well, the poorest country is Faerghus because their main exports are primarily chivalry and benevolence. The Alliance is only "small" because each individual territory basically counts as its own country, as opposed to the single Federation that it becomes in GW. After the death of Shahid, Leicester also has more foreign support than Faerghus's connection with the mostly destroyed Duscur and Adrestia's connection with its vassal, Brigid.
