I am a StudioOne user for many years now and I’ve been tracking with the StudioLive 24ai, it’s so fun to mix either ITB or line out to that board. After all these years (6) I’ve decided to go hybrid. Im strictly an amateur and I’m looking forward to the receipt of a new NEVE 8424 and lynx aurora 32n this system will let me utilize my outboard collection. I want to personally thank you for these tutorials demonstrating your awesome SSL console. It really helps me to put this whole plan into perspective.

@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy I do have one question though. So I bought two black lion 17 fet compressors to run stereo off a pre aux out. However, they only offer xlr I/0. The Mackie cr1604vlz only offers trs out, instead of xlr I/0 like some mixers have. Would I be safe running a trs to xlr cable to then plug into the two bl17fets??? My other idea on it was to run through a Behringer ultra graph pro stereo eq, then to the compressors and back in eq again then off aux send/returns. like using the eq as a di box/adapter,bc it offers both inputs trs and xlr stereo I/0s. I honestly don't know if that'll work or not though...Id think it would act like an effects loop into the eq? I'm not sure and I seriously don't wanna screw any of this stuff up,really counting on making more tunes here soon. Thank you

Man you really broke this down like a real teacher. Thank you so much!! This is by far the most comprehensive explanation I have seen on this topic. I love the way you broke down every little detail, it really helped. Most people I see on UA-cam explain this in a complicated fashion that is hard to understand, and they leave out important bits and pieces. But you really took the time and broke this down. Just found this video. Picked up a 24 channel console and have been playing around. I do this a bit differently.
    1. I set up my ins and outs just like you do, and I run physical outs from the outputs of my interface (Liquid Saffire 56 with a Pro 40 connected via ADAT for double the I/O) into the corresponding inputs on the console.
    2. I then connect the individual channels outs back into the inputs of my interface. So I make a physical loop for each channel.
    3. Finally I run a pair of physical outputs from my interface into a set of aux inputs on the board, and run connections back out of the main outs of the board into the last set if imputs on the interface.
    4. I run a of the main stereo output of my console into a set of inputs on the interface.
    5. Note that on the console, you need to route the output of each channel to the direct out only, and NOT to the main output of the console. However, for the Aux channels you DO route the the main outs.
    6. Inside Studio One, I can now use Pipeline on each channel to route the signal out of my daw, into the console channel, and back again.
    7. On the Main Bus in Studio One, I use a stereo instance of Pipeline to loop out of the interface, into the Aux inputs and back out of the Main console outputs and into Studio One.
By doing this, everything I'm doing on the console is happening inside Studio One in real time. And since latency is accounted for by Pipeline, I don't have to run all the tracks through the console if I don't want to. I can also continue the process through the Main Bus through Studio One (so no need for a print track), can add plugins to each track, can add sends, etc. I can even just bounce each track through the console, inprint the analog sound, and then proceed to mix in the box.
TL;DR using Pipeline for this really adds a lot of flexibility.

Great video!!! I apologize if this seems stupid: essentially, the way you have the routing (for the most part) is that each instrument or track is assigned to track on the physical mixer, which subsequently is routed physically to the respective input of the interface, and routed back out on from the respective output of the I/O to the input of the same channel on the physical mixer (e.g., kick drum = Track1 on mixer > line out of mixer > line in input 1 interface > Line output 1 interface > Line input Track1 on mixer. Closed loop as you said.
In this respective, you're really mainly dealing with already recorded individual tracks...and the DAW is really only used as a playback (and perhaps some internal plugins as well). When you press play in DAW all of the tracks with audio play (e.g., let's say the entire song with all of its tracks) and its passed out into the physical mixer first, and back in from the mixer (which is affected by all of the EQ and fader positions you've adjusted) into the audio interface where you actually "hear" playback? Now in this regard, are the studio monitors getting audio from the interface? Or, are the monitors getting the audio signal direct from the physical mixer?
Lastly, based on this example in the video you only print back the master (with all tracks included) into the DAW. Does this mean you're only adjusting knobs/faders and such in real time physically on the mixer after you have all of the recorded tracks ready in the DAW. And, even though you aren't printing it as you adjust...you hear those adjustments immediately in real-time because the signal is being run through the physical mixer before it really hits the speakers? You adjust everything in the context of the entire mix (e.g., keep restarting...adjust this and that....restart again adjust this and that...listen....okay adjust this etc)...then, when you're fully satisfied with the entire song...you print this master mix into a single track back into the mixer and export it out?
How does this work in the context of the actual recording process? I'm guessing the mixer has separate inputs for recording instruments/mics in addition to the line outputs/inputs to and from the interface?
sorry for the long post, but I just can't get my head around this.

Thank you so much. You know, i have a mixing console SoundCraft LX7ii 24 channels and I never used this configuration… Actually I was trying to get rid off it because of the Space and using a presonus Firestudio Project 8 channels to récord simultanously the drums for example. BUT what I was doing was to take my direct outputs from my mixer directly to the audio interface and Work inside the DAW. I thought i was taking the console preamps to the recording but at the same time i was injecting the presonus Preamp. As I understood with this very explained video (not for a beginner though; I understood all of it) I need better to take my physical cables First to audio interface and configure the I/O to get these “8 general outputs back to my soundcraft, and then get recorded my final mix with a stereo track with another 2 physical cables BACK to my audio interface. This Way would get my hardware Sound, use the eq, and I assume i can use the hardware gear too and record it. Was it wrong the way i used to work?
The funny thing it’s that when i got my Macbook Pro 2022 M2; oh lord, no compatible. I got better gear-Tech in this case with Apple and now everything is not at the Vanguard, so I’m thinking, in my case, to get the presonus Quantum with Thunderbolt 3. Firestudio Project works with Firewire Lol…
Anyway and Again, Thanks for your video and greetings from Hermosillo, Sonora, México.

Excellent tutorial Dave, This is exactly what i want to do but couldn't figure out how to configure the DAW output tracks in Studio One 5 to connect with the hardware outputs on my audio interface along with an 8 channel output preamp connected via ADAT to give me 16 outputs to my old Mackie 16VLZ4 mixer. I had everything connected up correctly with the preamp set to internal and the Interface set to ADAT but it was the Studio One 5 setup that had me confused. Thanks again Dave for such a great practical explanation.
In my case I am using a 2nd generation Focusrite 18i20 with a focusrite Octopre MKII dynamic preamp and I think trying to learn how to configure the Focusrite Control application added to my confusion. It would be great if sometime in the future you might consider doing a similar tutorial for the various types of Control applications like UC for Presonus as well as Universal Audio.I know there are tutorials out there but I think your way of demonstrating in such a practical and easy to understand are superior to anything i have seen.

@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Hi again Dave. I have my old Mackie mixer working perfectly with my apollo 8 and my Focusrite Octopre MKII dynamic preamp thanks to your brilliant tutorial.I then decided to do the same thing with my Presonus Studio 192 interface in place of my apollo 8 and it was an excercise in frustration as i had not realised how the Presonus UC control software was causing the problem and I was not getting the correct one to one output from my Studio 192 despite using the same input output setting in Presonus Studio One. I finally realised that I needed to bypass the mixer in UC and now it works as it should do. I feel that most of the tutorials on UC control focus mainly on tracking and monitoring but neglect the simple applications such as bypassing the mixer by explaining exactly what it is for.

Enjoyed the video, it was very insightful. I have a slightly different situation. I am attempting to use my 24 channel Soundcraft SI with a multi digital card. The issue I have is, by default, it wants to put my main outputs on output 1 and 2. There is no option for another type of output, other than the standard channels 1 thru 32, unlike your example in this video where you have the option to use "A MON L and A MON R" and a previous video with the Presonus StudioLive 32 ch mixer with AUX INPUT1 Left and Right. Any suggestions on how to create a suitable output would be greatly appreciated. I am new to home recording and Studio One but have worked front of house years back. Its the reason I have the mixer.
My second question is, once my channels are routed via the outputs section, I will be able to utilize the regular sends as if it was the regular signal, for headphone mixes, right?
I am asking these questions because I am trying to avoid having to spend money on regular interfaces (2 to 3), because this is for mainly recording my high school sons percussion rhythm section and my other son singing vocals, as a hobby. Since I have the digital card, I want to try and use my mixer to save money and have 24 channels and 16 outputs to play with.
I appreciate what you are doing with your channel. It will be an asset to me.

Curious whether you would prefer to run two sessions of Studio One on separate computers; one for play-out and another for capturing the new analog mix-down from your console and effects returns to be captured as a multi-track session to mix down further to a master bus; or just add more channels to the original session and come back into a master bus or several multi -bus channels and then to a master bus.

Very interesting video. I hope I understood all wright. Just I'd like to know, when I make a take with many instruments at the same time (live recording), all the instrument must go directly into the input of the audio interfaces, wright? So the audio interface must have his preamp? Is it correct?

Hey, thank you for your helpful video. I have now routed my console and my DAW (Logic Pro X) exactly as you described in your video. Unfortunately I have a problem listening to the signal. All my outputs of the audio interface (except the first two, as these are connected to the speakers) physically go into one input of the console. The console receives the signal, so far everything is fine. When I now want to process the respective signal on the channel, nothing happens. Neither the volume nor any other effect settings change. I hear the signal unchanged. So it seems as if the signal is intercepted beforehand and forwarded to the speakers. Unfortunately, I'm running out of ideas. Do you have any ideas? I use the third generation Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 as my audio interface.

Great explanation. Are you routing effects (rackmounts, 500 series, etc) to the SSL as an Aux ??
I've got a GL2800 32 channel, have similar audio setup, and running some physical rack gear to channel inserts (through patchbay) but want to have reverb units as "aux" to apply across multiple channels on mixer. Do I run reverb outs into aux?

Since the audio travels over USB (which is why it's a digital mixer not analog) you won't be able to connect it the same way Dave has. It also means Studio One won't separate the tracks individually, it will register it as stereo only.
I have a small Behringer Xenyx 1204USB mixer and it does exactly that. To do what Dave does is getting a mixer with either 1/4" TRS or the D-Sub connectors on it and connect that to an audio interface. For my direct recording I just switch to my FireStudio Mobile. It is limited, but has 6 line outs (something they got rid of on the smaller units).

No, you don’t. The X 32, as a digital mixer, basically combines AD/DA with an outboard mixing environment. It’s almost like if his SSL had an internal interface. The fact that the mixing environment on your mixer is digital is a non-point here.
