Coming from an FDM background I'm still amazed at the detail I get from my tiny 4k resin printer. I don't keep up with resin printers much so to see that huge 12k printers are the norm now is crazy. A year passing in 3d printing is like 3 years in any other field.

Thank you for this review. I JUST received my original GKTwo due to your original video recommending it. Upon performing the setup I saw that they had the 12k "upgrade" kit available and I almost pulled the trigger until I saw your explanation. Even though I am an experienced CP builder and hobbyist electronics buff, I am glad to not have pulled the trigger for "upgrade". I was not worried about the install, but worried that prints would be marginally better (or heaven forbid worse) and potentially lose some "crispiness" *read detail*. I believe I am in the same camp as you with regards to sharper details and utilizing anti-aliasing when needed. I do truly appreciate your opinions and value your experience in this field.

I doubt this will get seen, but I’ve been struggling with Uniformation Technical support since receiving my GK2 that I ordered the week before Black Friday. I have yet to get anything to print. They sent me a new main board and ribbon cable, which basically required me to do everything in this video except the power output portion….only to then realize they sent me the wrong board and the ribbon cable is too wide.
I am sitting here with pieces of a printer scattered all over the room after hours of troubleshooting and disassembly. I gave up on FDM printers after realizing I was spending hours tinkering for every minute of successful printing. Now I guess resin is out if the industry darling turns to junk as soon as it hits my doorstep.😢.
Thanks for the great videos. I wish you luck and great success, but watching others enjoyment is hurting too much for me to continue.

When I saw the title of your video, I thought to myself, well, get this upgrade next year. But then I watched the video and when I thought the 12k prints were the 8k prints because the details weren't crisp enough for my liking....let's just say that the 8k printer will stay an 8k printer. This just went to prove again that more isn't automatically better...at least for me.

Interesting. While I guessed correctly, it was only because the 12k edges were overexposed (harder/more refined) and not actual model detail, at which point, I was also guessing it was more of a 'new' profile setting while adapting to the res bump. Honestly I'm quite happy with 8k (though fingers crossed, maybe this will ever so slightly lower the cost of the backup screen price point), but print primarily large format, where getting more detail on the model itself with a reasonable file size is the challenging bit.
    Good review nonetheless!

I know you like to gush about these printers, but other than a heated vat which I don't benefit from, what makes this worth twice as much as a Saturn 12K that produces models that look as good? The difference between $200 and $400 may be digestible, but $500 to $850 (or $1050 if you want 12K) is a lot tougher to swallow. SpaceX makes better rockets than Estes, but you can't afford a SpaceX rocket. If you're doing production resin printing, you're probably better off using two Saturn 12K's than one GKTwo at the same speed. Honestly, if I were offered a free resin printer in the

My only reason for wanting this is I print some very tiny items for model builders. Chairs and benches in 1/200 scale, for example. The GK Two, currently does a great job with these. But at 12k, I was wondering if at that scale, with such minute detail, if I would see an improvement in quality. Specifically in the area of “strength”. When the wood slats on your chairs are that small… everything counts. I realize that’s probably well outside the scope of this review. But I’m still going to take your notes seriously to see if I can come to any additional conclusions.

I actually guessed wrong, but now that I know.. I DO think the 12k models look better despite all the stated reasons it shouldn't. Why? Because the 12k side looked a lot smoother to me overall, whereas the 8k side had a lot of .. not sure how to say it.. random texture that looked like oversharpening if it was a photograph. We will get to the extent of our technology, much like buying higher-resolution TVs. Still, the Human eye can no longer distinguish a perceivable change in the picture quality. What would be more interesting is if an SLA could inject colours and cure them within the layers to become multi-coloured in prints. Then, calibrate the curing process to gloss and matt colours to streamline parts production.

Top tip, as Ross says do the firmware upgrade first, otherwise the screen will have a weird fit when you turn it on - even more fun, if you install the wifi firmware after the 12K screen firmware, it actually takes you back to 8K setting so again screwing up the screen - you'll see the machine complain about 'incorrect size' whenever you try to print a model - took me a while to work that puzzle out - basically if you have the 12k screen and wifi module, just the 12K firmware will sort out both (you wont need to do the extra wifi update that comes on the mini CD).

Even if the smaller build area on the 12K screen is OK for you, it then comes down to the slightly softer detail and/or slightly smoother surface finish with the 12K and the initial hassle to install the 12K firmware, tear down/install the 12K screen, and then screw-adjust the light strength potentiometer while using the UV light meter to test the screen UV light output. Other than the ongoing bonus of having a UV light meter to check your screen (for adjusting for the proper layer exposure times), personally I would just stick with the base 8K for the slightly sharper detail, especially since you can only see the surface difference under magnifying lens and if you plan to paint the model, that will then smooth out the original sharp detail of the 8K-produced model (and further smooth or blur the 12K-produced model).

Seems like Uniformation needs to upgrade the light source and perhaps use a fresnel lens (does the 8K have a fesnel lens already?). You asked: "does the 8K have a fesnel lens already?" - No, the GK2 8K and 12K use the same marginal, obsolete crappy multi-LED with plastic lenses array.
Printers like this unfortunately over-priced POS, using The "UV Grid Array" light-source will not have properly sharp prints, uniform UV distribution and not suffer that disgusting "UV LED grid array" artifacts, as well as the unacceptable lack of UV uniformity, leading to the need to overexpose to compensate for the many variations of different areas, like Ross FauxHammer himself discusses (and embarrasses himself by showing the sloppy results of his "favourite printer's best results with his own resin brand", for example, which is a shame because he could do much better, 😪).
Get any printer you want, but make sure it has a COB light-source with a Fresnel lens - some examples, at a reasonable price:
      - Nova3D Whale3 series (any of them)
      - Elegoo Saturn 3 or Saturn 3 Ultra
      - Creality Halot Mage 8K (NOT the "Pro" version)
      - etc.
If you want a great printer that is what the GK2 wanted to be and failed, and have the cash for it, get a HeyGears Reflex.

The Saturn 3 and Ultra are both incredibly sharp MSLA printers, as is the Sonic Mini 8k.
The Whales USE cobb, but are so cheaply put together and the Creality machines deserve a Fine for their UI!
But honestly, you are splitting hairs, how exact do you need these prints to be? because, of every printer listed here... Your bigger issue, is finding a resin capable of rendering the accuracy you want. and having that resin also be practical and usable beyond just being looked at.

@@FauxHammer It's better that you not pretend that some sloppy shite you present is special, but when you do, don't expect not to get called out on it - and it's nothing personal it's just a fact, anyone can see your blurry "details" using your shite resin and "great" GK2 (which is reasonably good, except for that crappy light source after Uniformation fixed all the other things wrong with it when it first came out).
You admit loudly and repeatedly that you're more or less an ignoramus trying to learn and share (and trying to turn it into a good source of income), if your credibility is shot (by yourself) you won't be anything more than a fanboi guru if you're "lucky".
Be aware of concepts like "price/performance" ratios - if some printer(s) cost $300-$500 and printing results consistently _outperform_ a printer that costs >$750 (GK2), for someone who needs to print reliably and accurately and be able to actually get the most out of _quality_ resins, only a fool or a shill will buy/recommend the "expensive" but inferior one.
What kind of twit tells someone who's looking to spend up to approx. $1000 USD (or isn't getting free printers to "review") that "if you need dimensional accuracy that bad, please ignore the suggestions above and get a DLP printer.", when any DLP printer capable of producing reasonable functional accuracy will cost >$10,000 at "the low end"?

I might be in the minority here but I feel like the text swooshing on screen as you speak feels like very tacky editing. I feel like I'm watching something made for people with 0 attention span. Outside of that I really appreciate your work and think these are quite informative.

They are now into diminishing returns. I look at a 51 micron print and a 24 micron print and go, eh. The reality is no matter how dense they make the pixels you get light passing through the resin to the pixels around it anyways. Also as you increase the intensity of the light to get through the denser screen you get more light bleed. This problem can't be resolved without making each pixel it's own adjustable light source. IE one pixel can fire at 50% while the next fires at 75% to get smooth gradients etc. OLED resin printers anyone? 🙂 That's how my tiny brain self see's it anyways. I'm sure at some point some smart person will come out with a completely new methodology for high resolution 3d printing.

I don't understand the hype around this printer, but it has a couple of good features, it's a hinged lid and heated resin, but otherwise this printer is made very cheaply, it only has one rail and a thin screw rod like the cheapest small printers for 100 $, a plastic bathtub with plastic fasteners that often break and this bathtub also jams, we are told about the platform on which parts are printed that no resin will drip from it during removal, but look at its volume, it is gigantic, this means that all this volume will rise in the bathroom while printing and you can easily pour the resin, and most importantly, the price is at least twice as high as for printers from other brands with 12K resolution, and if you add to it the cost of Wi-Fi and the new 12K panel, then there’s absolutely a difference will be three times

Yeah, I didn't bite on the 12k. When the prints look exactly like the StL model, there's no reason to try and squeeze for more detail when it's not even there to squeeze for, its silly and a gimmick. 8k was crossing the uncanny valley for prints.

  • @PatrickSamphire

Well, I did get it right, but it took some squinting at the screen. I can't image I'd be able to tell after painting or even before with my bare eyes. Not that I can afford either version, but I imagine I would stick with the 8k if I could.

The Wifi Firmware update, made my printer think it didn't have the 12k upgrade.
The website also didn't seem to show that there were two options for the wifi upgrade- only the single set of files.
I re-did the 12k upgrade Firmware, and now it appears that the wifi works.
Don't know if I even had to do the Wifi Firmware upgrade now- as I'm thinking it is possible the 12k firmware had the wifi upgrade in it all along?

I did guess wrong, and had assumed the right was the 8K. I chose that way because I could see the slightly smoother surface, and the way you were speaking led me to believe there was going to be a huge BUT coming. That the tiny lines or artifacting I thought I was seeing on the left was the 12K and this was what you were going to point out and query if it was worth it if that was happening.
These two videos have been tremendously interesting though. To date, I've only done FDM printing. All I want at present are some cool Stargate spaceship models, and layer lines don't bother me for that. So printing them at fine quality on FDM comes out good enough for what I'm after. But you have got me considering one of these if I do get to the end of my current list and start thinking of printing things with even more detail.
Til now, I've avoided resin printing as I'm not the best at the maintenance stuff. And the toxic nature of the resin makes me worried I won't be tidy enough to keep myself fully safe. But the quality of life features on this printer definitely impressed me. Making it look like a very good place to try and get into that facet of the hobby. If someone were to do so, do you think the full kit is a wise way to go about it? Or are 3rd party cleaning and curing solutions better, despite the quality of the printer itself?
If I do grab one, it won't be for a while yet as the X1C kind of demolished my banked up cash reserve for the moment. So It'll be a good few months before I can afford all the bits and pieces needed to properly and safely explore this side of things. But your videos have gone a long way to convincing me that it could be worth the extra little bit of hassle I perceive to be involved compared to the now familiar FDM requirements.

Honestly 34-28 um is what the industry should adopt as the standard (until significant technological advancement has been made). They should also switch to focusing on improving QoL for printers instead. The GKtwo proves that people will pay for QoL features.
Here's the short list of what I want/think consumers want:
    1. Heater.
    2. Screen protector included.
    3. No screw build plate housing (or a build plate that connects to the printer like the gktwo)
    4. auto leveling and force detection (to avoid damage to the screen)
    5. wifi - to transfer files to the printer and to start prints.
    6. Resin pump. So we never have to worry about running out mid print.
    7. resin mixing built into the vat. I can think of a few ways to implement this most notable using the same tech as the resin pump.
    8. built in flex plate.
    9. Slicer built into the printer (allowing stl -> 3d print).
10.(most important and easiest to implement) HATCH STYLE DOORS. Dont make me lift a giant plastic barrel to access my print.

I felt it was easy to tell which one was the 12k prints and it got me because they looked "lighter" or more blown out. This printer is on my list to get I got in a elegoo Saturn Ultra 3 and this is coming in soon as well.
I was excited about the 12k knowing its not true 12k but now I have to think about it more, due to the fact that its so minimal.. wondering if the benefits of cleaner prints translates to better painting?
