Please support my case so that justice can be served in the courts and I can regain the rights to my music performances stolen from me in 1983 by all concerned.
This is the first ever studio recording of Smooth Operator at EMI STUDIOS 1983. EMI Publishing requested that we demo some songs for them in 1983 a later deal was done with the band members of Sade in 1984 or 1985 for at least a 500K advance on the basis of what we did in the studios in 1983 and further to what we produced as PSP and Sade for the Diamond Life Album released in May in 1984. This is a video of that actual EMI Smooth Operator recording plus archive pictures from the time when we created the song Smooth Operator at the Solid Light Studios in Camden London. Music produced at EMI Studios in early 1983, many months before recording the album Diamond Life in October 1983 with Robin Millar at PowerPlant Studios paid by RCA Records at that time.. The original band at the time comprised of myself, Paul Denman, Stuart Mathewman and Helen Adu. The actual music royalty split for this song should have been COOKE/DENMAN/ST JOHN/ADU as myself and Paul Denman wrote the bass line and the drum parts, Ray the original song called 'Diamond Life' that we adpated and called Smooth Operator. The singer demanded from Ray St John in October 1983 that she wanted 50% of the song credit even though she wasn't a musician and only wrote a lyric intro for the song? This is the first ever studio recording of the song Smooth Operator along with 'Should I love you' and 'Spirit' also recorded at EMI Studios at the same time..
Helen Fola Sade Adu or Sade was orignal a fashion designer and had no musical backround at all she founded a fashion company called Lubell and Adu but this went bust very early into its launch. She then auditioned for Pride after she had worked for the earlier band called Arriva a Latin Jazz band from Clacton Essex the singers home town. She was actually rejected by the band as her vocals were not good enough and she was then asked back by the manager Lee Barrett a few weeks later. The singer took her revenge when she formed a smaller band within Pride called Sade and she was courted by RCA who paid for the bands recordings of Smooth Operator and Your Love is King and Hang onto Your Love in 1983. Jack Stevens from RCA suggested that Helen Adu be pulled out of Pride and they would commision the recordings. The groups manager chose this option with Paul Anthony Cooke, Paul Denman on the bass and drums and the bands sax player Stuart Mathewman. RCA actually rejected the singer because they had been concentrating on the Eurythmics international launch at that time and they also didnt think much to the songs. The manager then found a deal for Sade with CBS later in the year, but the company wouldnt sign up the whole band only the singer. Paul Anthony Cooke objected to the new sound and change of the old songs created by the bands new producer and also the fact that the singer signed a solo deal. Paul was forced out of the band in January 1984 but rejoined the band in 1984 to perform some promotional TV work for Your Love is King on BBC Top of The Pops and the BBC's Oxford Road Show in Manchester.
The best SADE record ever made was paid for by RCA and reflects the original band pre Sade's solo record deal on the 19th October 1983. This was essentially the best of Sade in one record and it will never be surpassed a unique snapshot into what was a brilliant band in 83!

Not sure who this guy John C is below? But Robert Elms was a former boyfriend of Sade and they both lived in a Harringay squat not Tottenham so he even got that wrong? She was writing some stuff for the new smaller band in Pride that we called Sade and then sacked the rest of Pride to go out as Sade with her fronting the band. But we all co-wrote the songs in a studio in Camden but Stuart would work more closely on the music with her as she couldnt play an instrument only create vocal melodies and lyrics. I heard one of her tapes from her lawyers when I sued Sony and Sade in 95. In fact RE was at the studio in Barnet when Ray St John presented his song Diamond Life to myself PD, Stuart and Sade herself. She then took his original song title for her first 1984 album and yes called his song Smooth Operator, but that was the only change she made. Stuart M tried to get a creidt in 84 on SO but it was rejected as he never created anything. If RE had it right then SM would have been able to claim a credit but clearly RSJ refused this as he didnt write anything on the song as Ray was the guitarist and SM just played sax. Ray had all the song just on guitar and with lyrics at the time in Barnet but no Bass or Drums recorded in fact no demo at all. So myself and Paul Denman started cretaing these parts in the Camden studio with Sade and the EMI demo is a recording of what we did. SM wanted the drum part to be a bossa nova and I thought it was a shit idea so I played it as I felt it with a break in the beat and that went on to be used by the producers and all concerned it is 100% mine and the bass parts are 100% unique from PD. Sade and SM will have gone through the song in her flat to perform it but it went down in the studio as Ray had intended but with an original drum and bass part that he never had before he introduced it to myself and PD. The two people who should have got the credit never did that is the originaters of the drum and bass parts that made it what it was myself and PD. Sade abd everyone all know this so who cares its good to know what you did even though it has never been recognised as such by all concerned. Myself and Paul Denman wrote the Bass and Drum parts for Smooth Operator period. And then this song then went onto to be one of Sade's biggest hits ever in the USA and the UK.

This might be the coolest song ever. I don't think even in Brazilian bossa nova I've heard something this cool. Absolutely elegant. So now we know that it was written by Ray St John, Paul Denman and Paul Cooke (not the sex pistol, I guess). Anyway, this is perfection. Greetings from Brazil.

I agree Jeff with Ray St John - Sade would not have been famous:) Smooth Operator is still the biggest and best know Sade hit to date along with the first album Diamond Life. We did invite Ray to join the band when we split with Pride but got rid of him as he didnt look right as we had the iamge of the three latin boys in the band with black jumpers:) What happened after that was that they then added every ugly session player in town and blew it. Sade was signed on image and on that hit song....

This was the first ever recording we made of Smooth Operator in the studio, we got a demo session with EMI Publishing and went into their studio to put this song down. It doesnt differ from the track that Robin Millar produced and I think we did a better job:) It more or less remained the same and this Pride song by Ray St John is what made Sade what she was in 1984........
Wow. Not a perfect recording obviously but we get it. After the 70s we were ready for this. One of my great regrets is not ever seeing Sade live. I used to live in London but at the wrong time

I guess because he is a nobody till this day and Sade; even though she is so private and her band only releases albums sporadically, STILL has loyal 80s fans and new ones flock to her concerts as once in a lifetime experiences and her albums (when released) STILL have high sales compared to older 80s artists who try come-backs and fail at it. She just keeps reeling us in because she and her band are THAT GREAT!

He would love to watch a documentary about the background of the creation of the bands Pride and Sade. I also wonder what the musical inspirations of the musicians from SADE and PRIDE were. And how did this music become so great and timeless? In my opinion, much of the music of the 1980s, based on a poor sample library of early drum machines and synthesizers, simply sounds weak today. Of course, authors such as Prince and Michael Jackson also made music based on samples and drum machines, and it still sounds good today, but a lot of music from the 80s sounds simply bad. This whole synth pop thing is a nightmare.

That's what happened man we had a deal as a band with RCA through Jack Stevens and the singer and the manager just walked over to cbs and signed it all solo. She took 65000 advance at the time nobody got a penny and she took her best friend on a holiday just after. That is why I got sacked as I was the only one to question it vehemently. Even when I played top of the pops she registered the band as signed to cbs records so I didn't get paid from that. I had to sue the BBC in 2000 to get that payment. How's that for honest then I received an out of court settlement from the BBC..

When I found out she was a thief in 1983 I was out of there and told her what I though of her nobody else did thats why I dont live in a 2 million pound house. She tried to keep it sweet and send my money and stuff but in the end I said to her in a letter pay me what you owe me or I will take you to court and I did , I made it public and personal as people like her do not like the truth themselves. But thats what I found man it was ugly.

I can not judge what really happened at the very beginning (I 'm nobody, not even english, not even in the music industry, so if you say Sade and Matthewman "stole" part of the deal, I'm ready to believe it, but stop saying the rest of the band didn't create anything good, because they DID and MANY!!! They are really damn good and that I know, nobody else is at the origin of any song (and WHAT songs!!!) they created later.. So ok "smooth op" was a real good song that launched them, but they surely don't need and never needed anybody to follow and blow all charts and sell millions of records, did they???? and sorry but I must add they did better than "smooth operator", much better, the whole "promise "album is a masterpiece..

Hi Guys, Ray St John just took the money and ran like the rest of the band hanging onto the singers nipples like little piglets:) Interesting metaphor! Myself and the bass player Paul Denman and Ray St John should have had the music credits for the song Smooth Operator as the singer never wrote a word of any lyric and didnt contribute to any music. Neither did Stuart Mathewman, but those two had control of the deal and situation so just put down the singer as co-writer. Mathewman tried to claim
I still don't know how they managed to take credit for the song without the rest of the band getting their fair share.

The song Smooth Operator that Helen Adu didnt write:) This song was written by Ray St John the guitarist from Pride, he created the original lyric, song melody and music. Ray your a genius mate and you got ripped off by a Smooth Operator:(

This is just awful and not the first time an artist has done this but why would Paul Denman go along with this if he was owed money.
It was above his pay grade Ryan and everyone bowed down to Helen and her manager on the situation including the royalty splits with Ray St John that they engineered. I didn't have the 100K to test this out in court in 95 but I think myself and PD had a good claim. PD did very well out of Sade in the end and my protest was quickly snubbed out by all concerned:)
Sade paid him 250K a year in 1984 for his silence?
