@@DougPipersr I have seen other explanations of the process but I appreciate you highlighting this in your video. It really is what makes Sierra Nevada so special and would likely not happen without Ken's direction. I'll raise one to both of you tonight.
That's exactly what i'm drinking as I watch, and it's just a glorious beer, never had anything remotely bad from Sierra, quality control is spectacular. Great interview.
We are so lucky to have a brewery with integrity like Sierra Nevada around, Celebration ale is a true masterpiece of the brewers art, I always looked forward to it. Love the way it looks when poured into a glass , that head is like mashed potatoes. Thank you Ken ! And thank you for making this video .
Thank you, I too feel especially blessed that the Sierra's NC location is just an hour away from my home. What an incredible brewery. What are your other favorite Sierra Nevada beers?
Very cool interview Doug, what a treat that Ken made some time to talk with you and by extension us! Traditions are special, the younger generations seem to be missing out and I love seeing you take time to cover this special seasonal brew! Cheers from NH Doug and everyone reading / watching this one! I just picked up some Celebration Ale and sat down and searched for a video to enjoy / reminisce over my glass, this was perfect. 😊
It was a huge privilege to spend the afternoon with Ken. Sadly we didn't get to enjoy a beer together due to NC law, but I hope to share a Cele with him soon. Part 3 of my interview with Ken should be live before the end of the month.
I look forward to Celebration every year. Live close to Chico and really enjoy supporting an independent company that has delivered for decades. Thank you for making time for American beer history Ken, good talk.
I agree! I didn't fully appreciate Celebration until I learned about the extra effort everyone at the brewery puts into the brewing of Celebration. It unbelievable!
@@DougPipersr Thanks for considering. Your content is long format without much visual. Perfect for podcast so I can enjoy on my commute in my car. Harder to sit there and listen on my computer...
Never ever make this beer all year long! I love looking forward to this every year. This year kind of sucked here in Texas and was hard to find and more expensive than I wanted, but it NEVER disappoints! Definitely one of my favorites of all time! Thank you Ken!
I agree! But it's impossible to make it all year long. It's totally dependent on the hop harvest, which is an annual event. Which is why IPA's we buy all year long don't compare to a fresh Celebration Ale. Do you have another favorite seasonal?
@@DougPipersr I did not know Ken had to weld the first fermenters by himself (which after thinking is not suprising, as there was little if no offer for craft breweries in the 70s). Also, I did not know they were openfermenting (I never did it, I am too worried about infections, while many of my brewing relatives do). And also, when they reduced the use of crystal mal in favor of munich. Thanks again!
The NC open fermenters are closed to the public and behind a glass wall. They were not being used during the interview. They're pretty careful and I understand Anchor was the same way.
Mr Grossman just touched on the most important aspect of dry hopping, not like he needs more competition doing it right. When the lupulin gland is crushed and ruptured, it allows the contents of the gland to dry out. Using whole cones and dry hopping, he is preserving the lupulin. Interesting fact about hopps. The lupulin glands rupture when a mouse or other mammal rub it on themselves making them go to sleep. If they can't get it together, they'll be eaten or starved in their sleep. Either way, it's fertilizer. Sleeeep children, sleeeeeep!
Whoaaa! Amazing! Does alcohol dissolve the lupulin? Because there's not much mechanical activities that would mechanically rupture the lupulin glands during kettle hopping or dry hopping.
@@DougPipersr honestly I'd kick it entirely. I didn't notice it while I was just listening on my phone, but when I threw my headphones on it was pretty distracting.
the @jtmozingo109 Great ...thank you ....that's very helpful! There are two more videos coming from my visit and this will help with the final edit! If you think of anything else, don't hesitate to to let me know!
Excellent! More please . . .
Thank you Russell! I really appreciate the kind words. Parts 2 &3 are coming very soon
One of the best beers ever made. I'm very grateful to Ken for his commitment to brew it every year.
It appears to be a huge commitment. It's got to cost him 2X what they spend on any other Sierra Nevada beer.

Ken is one of the godfathers of craft beer. A beer visionary that was so ahead of his time.
I was amazed that he set out to create a uniquely American flavor! What seemed significant to you?

Celebration is world class A+
I think so too! Especially now that I understand all the planning, effort and logistics it takes to brew it once per year!

@@DougPipersr Under magnication it looks like clear yellow syrup in see thru baggies which tear when a mouse rubs on it getting it in their fur.
So do the "baggies" dissolve in alcohol? It's my understanding it's almost impossible to dry hop an AF beer.
Great work, You are my boy Piper!
Thanks! It was such a thrill to get to hang with Ken for the afternoon. We had a ton of fun and I hope to do it again sometime soon.
Became available in Lawrence yesterday
How do you think it compared to last years Cele?
Awesome talk! Looking forward to more of these. Music is pretty distracting though. 100% would axe that next time.
Great feedback! Thank you. Eliminate the entire music track or was there an especially bothersome segment?
