What does it mean for congregational worship to be Spirit-filled? We received this question from a leader wanting to better understand why some members of his church left because they said his leading wasn't Spirit-filled enough. We talk about the importance of planning, the purpose of spiritual gifts, how a leader can grow in spontaneity, and more. Thanks for joining us!

Thank you for this! When I came to a more Reformed theology, I really struggled with this as I grew up in pentecostal/Charismatic circles. I long for a Spirit-driven, theologically sound worship in today's churches.

For several years I was in an Orthodox Christian church. Every action of the priest and congregation was prescribed. Every word of the liturgy came from a book. And I had wonderful times of closeness to God there. The liturgy, and our thoughts, were focused on God, not our own feelings. If we were happy, that was fine; if we were sad, that was fine too. I came to church to encounter the constant and unchanging glory and power of God regardless of whatever temporary emotions I might be feeling or whatever life circumstances I was experiencing. The idea of complaining that it wasn't "spirit-filled" enough or spontaneous enough would have been completely foreign to me.

Wow another great Podcast gentlemen. Thank you. Your pressing of people repeatedly to the Word in worship is so encouraging. Their ultimate need is met completely in Him and He is found in the Word. John 1:41-42. When you bring people to Him through the Word and Worship and present them to Our Lord with song/prayer/preaching, The Holy Spirit does the work in the hearts of those individuals and we get out of the way so that they may see and savor Him. God be glorified as you lead others to Him with the gifts He has given you to steward. Continuing to place you at His feet in prayer.

I’m a worship leader who wants to be biblical in my worship leading, thank you so much for this! I love to sing about Jesus and I love the Holy Spirit too. Thank you for this! I’m gonna share this with my pastor!

This is so extremely helpful for me right now. I struggle with this same thing and it really gets me down at times. You all have really been an encouragement to me.

Enjoyed listening to the discussion very much. One question that could be asked of the dissatisfied congregant is for them to give an example of what constitutes spirit filled worship.

Guys this is SO helpful! I was in pentacostal / charismatic worship teams for 20+ years and since watching the American Gospel movie just under a year ago, I've found a Biblically sound Church, and only just joined the worship team two weeks ago. I've been nervous about it because it's like starting from scratch with my theology of worship, so this video is SO perfectly timed and SO helpful! Thanks so much. 😁🙏🏻

Love that song ,the power of the cross. It carries a powerful and important message. Whenever I sing it I am awed by what Christ did for us by dying on the cross.
Songs of testimony have their place in a worship service but most of the music in my view should lead us to focus on God and preaching the true Gospel through music.

Not all hymns and not all songs.
