- This is my home made steam sterilizing tank for preparing mushroom substrate. It's used to kill a large percentage of living organisms within mushroom substrate so the mushroom mycelium can colonize the substrate without competition. To do this I add energy into the tank via steam, which heats the tank up. When you have a very large amount of substrate in the tank, it can take a very long time! When full this tank can hold over 110 megajoule, or .11 gigajoule of heat energy.You can calculate how long it's going to take to heat up with the calculations shown in the video.

Yes, it is! The boiler any way, I don't have blueprints for the tank.
Congratulations on the video. However, I am building a sterilizer on a 55 gallon barrel, 3.5 kW element and PID control. The Bubbas Barrels manual says that I will have to set the 93 celsius and the time of 1080 minutes or 18 hours for a good sterilization. According to your explanation with beer, rsrstrs, can I decrease this time?

I noticed you sterilize the substrate outside and then move it into the lab for inoculation, is there a chance of contamination during that process? I have seen other growers wheel their sterilizer into the lab before unloading it.

Well done Tom, thanks for sharing! Just to double check, once it heats up to 95C do you keep it there for 12 hours? How long does it take to cool down before you inoculate?
I keep it there for 24 hours. You could do 12 hours if you heat it to 99c I would think.

Internal is 1380 x 770 x 770. There is a false floor which maybe adds another 120 to the height.
What about efficiency and loss in the system. With it cooling off outside over night. That would need a few beers to work out
The tank is very efficient. I think it might radiate around 200watts over the whole thing once its at 95c.
Hey Tom, love your vids. Quick question. Your PID controller. Are you running your rtd probe in your large spawn tub with a set point of 99 degrees or is the probe in the boiler tank? I’m assuming it’s in the spawn tub and the water in the tank is boiling most of the time? Also are you running pid, on/off control or is it just temperature indication?

Probe in on top of the steam tank, so the boiler will run until the whole tank gets up to temperature.

You know, just cause I’m already here, do you know a quick way to find online or where ever that I can find how to learn the formula you used to figure out the efficiency of Your sterilizer... so I can do mine. I have a video about calculating boiler efficiency. Check my uploads. if your boiler is insulated properly, then it should be almost as efficient as the element inside it.
