  • ND filters are super useful in both video and photography but there's seems to be a bit of confusion about what they do and don't do. Here's a quick explanation.

    Well done! Could you do one on Variable vs fixed and which one you should start with?

      Hey, Henk! It's really just a mater of what you're using the filter for in my opinion. Variable ones, no matter how expensive and good the quality is, will always have a slight color shift or extra vignetting because it's two piece of glass with different coatings on top of each other. So, you always lose image quality. A fixed ND, a good one, shouldn't have any loss in image quality. Of course, for run and gunning and vlogging, having to switch fixed NDs is all the time is a pain in the ass so it's easier to use a variable one.

      @@JorisHermans Thank you. I mostly shoot outdoor (in the middle of the day sometimes). I cannot change it, so are considering just to make the light less bright.

      Maybe a set of magnetic fixed ND would be a good solution.

    Filters that's a topic that someone could do a whole series of videos on😆
    Personally most or maybe many of us can get by with a variable ND and CPL or Circular Polarizer for water and some other situations, CPL's work for car photos too.
    In my film days I had a whole pack of filters, red, yellow, blue, ND, polarizers of fixed grades, thank goodness I only carry three these days, a variable ND, CPL and a spare UV-clear, which I know is a touchy subject for some, but I tend to break stuff at times and the UV have save me from ruining an expensive lens😉 much cheaper to replace a filter than a lens I just have to remember to remove the filter from lens every now and then and give it a clean, dust always seems to find its way in.
    Cheers.

    Hey Joris…I have a question, and possibly worth a video.
    I have an M50, love it and my go to lens is the Sigma 16mm f1.4 DC DN for photographs.
    For video in 4k, adding the crop factor, it’s a 38/39mm - solo vlogging in 4k with it is, shall we say “painful” having to stretch out max reach and hold the camera.
    So…all that said above, would a “wide angle adapter” be something to think about or use? Have you tried them?

    • @JorisHermans
      @JorisHermans  2 роки тому +1

      Never tried it because with my M50 I always vlog in 1080 because of the autofocus. It's not usable in 4K and I don't want to think about manual focus when I'm vlogging because I know I will forget to focus and mess up a lot of shots 😅
