- I get all of the refinishing work done on the clapper box in this episode. Other then the lantern tool post, it's ready to go back on the machine.
I received a large crate from my friend Jack Hoying during the week. In it was a nice big lot of tools I purchased from him.

Man what I'd give for 72 degrees this time of year, high 60s to low 70s is heaven as far as I'm concerned. Even for ND it's been unseasonably cold up here, sitting at about 8 degrees as I write this. I'm definitely jealous of the weather you're getting Adam.
As far as the cold bluing I've never had good results with the stuff they sell for firearms, but I've never tried any solution intended for tools. I'd love to see a video of you trying some cold bluing, maybe on some scrap stuff for practice. As far as using the cold bluing on the shaper, anything cosmetic is going to be a matter of taste. Do what you think looks best, it's your machine after all.
I woke up this morning to mid 40's. I was running my ac yesterday.
My personal opinion- Blacked holder and polisher bold and bolt head. A nice contrast.

in my experience, the only way to find something you know you have somewhere in the shop is to buy a new one...then the old one will turn up right away

i did that to a South Bend lathe.
it was a lot of work but the results were worth it. A lot of WD40 and scotch bright pads

Adam... in the middle of your two videos, I had a sudden unrelenting urge for a rack of ribs! Why is that? I ran to the freezer and only found a shoulder roast... oh well, it is cooking-up as we speak (so to speak)... thanks... great videos! Looking forward to restoring the clapper-box on my Cincinnati 24" flat-belt shaper... needs a new screw and/or nut... way too much backlash! Maybe you can address the issue of backlash on the clapper box screw in a video? Potential fixes? OOPS... I see you did more videos on the clapper box... did you address the screw/nut backlash? Looks like I better watch those videos also... you might have already made a video on that topic... not surprised... thanks again!
Time to get your surface grinder going. That would have been the hot tip for squaring up that clapper box and other semi-flat items you want flat again. The tool black also holds oil to keep the rust at bay, but with all the apprentice marks in some of those items, you might have a tough time bluing them. Oil always seems to get trapped in those and that ruins the blue. The more polished the part is, the better it looks afterwards. Obviously the previous operator never heard of a lead hammer. Quite the motherload of goodies you got there.
He's getting rid of it. :(

Its funny I have old guns with corrosion pitting like that it must be high carbon steel not mixed properly.
If you want to check out a metal coloring method take a look at Bill Worden's Steel FX channel. He does a process similar to cold bluing but it is really more of a cold case hardening effect. he does some very dramatic case hardening effects on many different metals. I took watched Tom Lipton with his lapping videos and while I am a woodworker I have done and am in the process of cleaning up my metal cast iron planes. I bought a granite surface plate from Grizzly and taped wet and dry sandpaper to it and achieved some very good results.

James Stanlake It is many years ago but there was an article in Fine Woodworking magazine giving a pretty detailed approach to tuning a metal bodied woodplane. It involved slightly relieving the unimportant parts of the surface so there would be less drag as the plane passed over the wood. Late 1970s, early 1980s if this is of interest to you. For someone who uses planes regularly it makes quite a bit of sense.

Just make sure the Chuck wrench is not an OX tool brand, i hear they are not very reliable...
Since you have them out, why not replace those silly flathead screws with some socket head cap screws? There is really no excuse for using flat heads ever

I use those little tiny pin gauges for doing fuel injectors. I never use them unless I am in the floor. You drop one even on a clean floor it seams they always disappear.
Shouldn't you have clamped that clapper hard back into the external box before reaming it?

Myself, I’m not likely to become a machinist, but I do have a need to clean up some beat up metal parts and make them look good. So thanks for sharing.

Adam, to properly blue the lantern, you have to polish it first. I believe that bottle of cold blue you have is from Birchwood Casey. Gunsmiths use it all the time. The blued lantern would look sharp. As to the clapper, have you considered having the sides hard chromed. This is NOT like the bumper of a pickup truck, more like the bore and chamber of a rifle. A local plating shop should be able to give you info. See you at the Bar-Z, Jon
Finish the whole clapper box minus the mating surfaces. That would look awesome with the polished/black contrast. I love the Shaper videos, what a great series!
Hoying seems to be a nice guy throwing in those freebies but no one else should expect the same unless *YOU* have a prior agreement with him. Remember, if anything is presented as free, you are the product and means of profit(see Facebook).
If Murphy's Law kicks in, you'll find your old Prussian Blue when your replacement arrives.
Forgive my rookie status here Adam and please dont laugh too hard, but in lieu of actually welding up and machining down the clapper parts for tighter clearance, your use of the bolt to snug it up at the top gave me a thought - is it possible over the years the sides of the box have splayed outward from pressure increasing the side tolerance-? if so is it reasonable to assume theyre no longer square, and if so is it a reasonable idea to take the box to a press and gently press both sides inward a few thousandths until square again and/or it makes up for (some) of the wear between the parts and tightens up the clearance-?? I realize it would not affect the tolerance at the base inside, but maybe it would help with the overall slack situation in general-?? Im sure this comment will generate some laughs from the real machinists out there-lol
I'm not sure about that with it being cast. Others have commented about it but I don't know if it's the right move. Might be worth trying on the spare clapper.
Again im no machinist and it shows, I totally forgot the fact that its a casting - I was thinking it was steel. Maybe with some heat, but regardless I can see why you wouldnt want to go pressing on a one of a kind virtually irreplaceable part on the off chance of maybe gaining a few thou - a more ambitious approach might be making an all new box assembly, but thats getting really involved. Thanks for not making me and my suggestion look too foolish-lol Again maybe one will show up out of the ether in really good shape - dont hold yer breath-lol
This might sound a bit bonkers, but, when Keith Fenner does shaft straightening he uses the expansion and contraction, to a lesser size, of the materiel to get it to move around the way he wants it to. We all know that welding or cutting a plate will buckle it if done 'right' but how about if you spot heated then quenched in the back there on the inside of the clapper box and sucked in the outer edges. I can't do a drawing here but... At 00:56 you show the inside of the clapper box. What would happen if you spot heat and quenched in the middle line above and below that inch and a half through hole? Between it and the little hole. Or, get right into the inner corner there and hit it along the right angle bend. I wonder if that would draw the sides in closed enough for you to close that 1000' and then you can scrape it to fit??

Oh my - that box was a bunch of gorgeous goodies - all those pin gauges and lots of other stuff. Must have been one heavy box! I'm still sad I sold my 12x18 cast surface plate before I moved.

Polish the lantern. One blued(blacked) part against the grey paint and polished metal would look out of place.
WeirdHarold49 seems like something that could be added later if it doesn’t look good polished. If you tiny it first and don’t like it then there’s a bunch more work for you.
I Love the "fabricobbled" vise stand! I need to get one made up for my recent score of a C.Parker 110lb vise. Its almost ABom sized!

I wonder if you could get the clapper sides built up with hard chrome (you would have to surface grind them back to size). Then you could hand scrape the box to fit.
Hey Adam, about 3 or 4 years ago one of your viewers sent you a 2 part vise for the mill, like that. If I remember it was orange. So you do already have one. I think you need more shelves so you can see what you have :-) LOL. The shapers coming out nice. I can't imagine you using those tiny pins, they are just not ABOM sized.

that two piece vise is very handy
It always baffles me how used gauge pin and gauge block sets frequently seem to be missing a piece or two when you see them for sale. I sometimes wonder what happens to them.
Probably the same thing that happens to one sock in the dryer?

That friend of yours "Jack"... he did an absolute fine job on packaging your tools up, for a rough venture, as to many folks either do not know how rough the shipping is, on the items within the packaging, or simply do not care, once they get paid... Nice Job on the packaging, multi leveled, dampening materials, all mounted on a pallet... That just makes for a nice day, when receiving new toys...

Go ahead and Blu it,if you don't like it you can always polish it off! I think it blued will give a good contrast.
@Abom79 @13:00 The problem of that gap in the Clapper Box SHOULD be remedied with Nickel Plating the mating faces. Two benefits: removes slack that makes your cuts less accurate, surfaces the rub points for wear resistsnce.

Brush the paper. DUDE...I found a lapping plate at work. The guy is using it as a surface plate. The surface plate is being used as a lap bench. Don't ask. I'm on wk 3.
I might have to pick up a couple of those micrometers from Jack, be great for reloading and Starrett at a price half as much as an almost decent set of chinese electronic calipers.

Good series. Bluing would be nice loking on the latern.Warming part with a heat gun makes cold bluing more effective. Absolute cleanliness(no oil and no fingerprints). Good luck.
7:25 I just realized, that would make a heck of a door knocker! Put a tool in it as a handle, make some fake large bolts to hold it on. Definitely require a heavy duty door, solid wood. Attach with bolts that look like 5/8 bolts , but are actually 1/8"-3/16" maybe 1/4" lag bolts, that would looks so cool on a door, maybe make the door look like a chunk of iron. If someone had a clapper, that is clapped out, haha, it would be a good second life! If I did that, I'd want to make a copper or brass tag for the back. Explaining exactly what it is from, so it could go to it's original purpose in the future possibly!
Please don’t blacken visible parts of the shaper. You’ll take good care of it, so please keep it «original». You’ll soon enough make some parts that need the extra protection in that you treat the surface to be «blued» and oiled. I really enjoy your content. I sometimes rewatch your content just to listen to you talking while I do tasks around the home. You’re like a friend that is talking in the backgrund, telling me what’s up.

Very Cool on the clapper Adam! I like to buy and restore old hand planers and after de-rusting with either Naval Jelly or other rust removal, I read to use de-natured alcohol after scrubbing to prevent them from rusting, flashing if you will. It seems to work and with a proper wipe down of oil, I don't have rust. I'm liking the pin gauges! Not sure how those bitty ones made it, but very cool they did! Looking forward to more SNS! 211!!! Like I said, more shows than some big production sitcoms that are out there and way better to watch!
You constantly have to shift heavy gear, why not invest in a small forklift truck. It will sure come in handy in the shop.

Black. Ever work with belzona 1111? Greatstuff to fill, expensive but excellent to have around the shop.
Nice tool acquisitions. You could have easily surfaced ground all the exposed sides to your clapper box to remove all those hammer marks and not have changed any internal dimensions. That would have given you a brand new looking clapper box. And then blacken the cone and tapered pin to give that quality contrast. Just a thought! I am sure it would look great however you decide.
I didn't want to "surface grind" anything, nor machine it. I cleaned it up just how I had in mind and it looks great.
