  • Hi and welcome to my channel,
    In this video I will be restoring my driveshafts from my e30 touring as the third video of my rear assembly series.
    There was little information about how to remove the axle end CV joint, I found an old thread that showed it was possible and had a go myself on a spare axle I had. It is documented in the video on how to remove and re-fit this end in a non-destructive manner!
    I painted and plated the necessary parts to make my usual look of restorations.
    Time Codes:

      @@BadE30hi, good video! The video beginning said is upgrade for smaller 318i? So the haft shaft is from 325i? Are they interchangeable? My car is 320i, I know it use small haft shaft, I may upgrade to 325i haft shaft too, if they are interchangeable! Regards

      @BadE30  5 місяців тому

      @@anilec333 yes they are interchangeable. I don’t know which are different, i would expect the 320i to have the medium case diff which would come with the larger CV shafts. So you may be ok there!

    Nice! I did the same procedure on my Mercedes W140 axle. Disassembled it completely like you showed and struggled with assembly too (inner cv joint). Did more axles recently and got away with flushing the inner cv join and re greasing it. Don't know how it is on BMW, but on MB, I even did re-use the original boots. They have micro cracks, but rubber is so thick... I thought better re-use the old, 30 year old PROPER rubber, than installing crap aftermarket one

    I would like to know how the axles are holding up. specifically the outer compresion sleeve you needed to pry off. I just finished doing mine but I cant quite get the sleeve to compress back on like from factory.

    • @BadE30
      @BadE30  Рік тому

      I haven’t finished the car yet so they have not been used! However many people have now used this method as shown and I’ve not heard of an issue as of yet. You could use some sealant to hold them in place if you are not confident that they’re compressed enough

    I read that you should mark each piece in relation to where they were positioned originally, as well as attempt to put every single ballbearing back where it originally came from. Did you do this? How are the axles holding up?

    • @BadE30
      @BadE30  9 місяців тому +2

      Yes I’m sure I mentioned it, but each cage, gear and bearings should be kept together and orientation is needed. I measured each bearing to make sure they were all the same size, the bearings shouldn’t need to be kept for each exact cage placement as because of their material they should not wear significantly. If worn they need replacing

    I’m just in the process of rebuilding mine. I’ve put all the internal components back together ie the circle and star shaped pieces and the ball bearings, but it’s has basically locked it self in place and won’t rotate as it should. Any ideas where I’ve gone wrong and any solutions to get them back out and fitted correctly?
    Thanks for any help from anyone

      I found I first installed them the wrong way round and it too kept jamming up, a slight tap with some wood or something soft should help you start to get movement to remove and inspect

    Este metodo servirá para BMW E46 ? Excelente video!

      Hi, these e30 shafts should be a similar process to e46. May be some slight differences

    Do you maybe know if there is substitute part for the cover that your are slowly hammering away starting at 4:05?
    My axle shaft is OK, but someone probably hammered it in last time and damaged the cover, with grease coming out from the perimeter.

    • @BadE30
      @BadE30  6 місяців тому +1

      Unfortunately I have not found a replacement for these and that is why you have to be so delicate! You could remove it, clean up the area, add some gasket sealant and reseal?

    • @lukathegarlic

      @@BadE30 Thanks for response. No, the cover was deformed by the previous owner and even if I could remove it with patience, I wouldn't be able to straighten it.
      Before removal, I tried re-hammering the lip on it, but it did not hold grease inside. So I removed it in the hope I will find a boot set with the cover.
      Have not yet received an answer from a specialty shop for drivetrain components that provided me with a similar solution for driveshaft for another car, if I find something, I'll report back.
      I have already bought two new driveshafts, but would love to fix the old ones and keep using them, with the new ones being spare. :)
