    LYRICS
You fell asleep with your head down
    I fell asleep saying please
The banjos and fiddles played breakdowns
    And we slept like babies
Out in the bar room you sang songs
    Songs from another time
And when you got the words wrong
I woke up and sang your lines
You take the high road - and I'll take the low road
    I'll get there before you
    We'll make it to Scotland
Or have we forgotten what we're going there for?
You fell in love with your hands out
Your hands made a peace sign
So I fell apart when you pulled out
We ought to try to try
    Everything's broken around me
The heather dies when I pass
The sky looks like a foundry
Where my heart is metal cast
You take the high road - and I'll take the low road
    I'll get there before you
    We'll make it to Scotland
Or have we forgotten what we're going there for?
I'll swim 'cross the coldest sea
    In a transatlantic reverie
Just to see your face when I wash up
On the barren shores of Skye
Then to the lowlands we'll fly
Take my hand, walk side by side
    Side by side
    Jamie, try me
    Pour me another I'm dry
Hold on to whatever will be
And we'll raise our glasses high
You take the high road - and I'll take the low road
    I'll get there before you
    We'll make it to Scotland
Or have we forgotten what we're going there for?

I started writing Transatlantic many years ago - after one of my frequent trips across the pond. The lyric started as a classic love song, but when I dusted it off to complete it for this project with the Irish Arts Center, it became something different. I felt strangely moved by the nostalgia and longing for camaraderie, innocently described by my pre-pandemic self. As I finished the tune in January of this year - feeling certain of nothing but the uncertainty of these times - I immediately began to hear the voice of Kris Drever, a friend based in Glasgow. Kris enlisted his trio mates Euan Burton and Louis Abbott to be the rhythm section and layered the recording with the inimitable strings of Jeremy Kittel. The refrain references the old classic Loch Lomond, a 'song from another time,' Raise a glass. We will be together again soon.

This is so, so, so, so beautiful. The music, the words, but most of all Europe and America singing together with one voice! We are all one. Thanks so much, Aoife!

I use this track to help self-soothe, for what that's worth. My brother and I had a lot of trauma in our childhood. He is a musician now...I'm not..just blue collar..but when we sing together it feels like magic. He plays with so much feeling..basically he was born for it.... I hope we do this song one day, I thinkbit's well within our ranges...If so, I'll let you all know. Thanks again.

It's not that I've exactly had it on repeat, but I've listened through several times, and it keeps getting better.
Can't wait to see you again in person.

Beautiful song. Awesome singing. Great production. There are some singers I really love, but one album worth at a setting and I'm done. Their voices can be cloying. Never with Aiofe. So smooth and beautiful. I could listen all day and never really get worn out on it.

Incredibly lovely, a song for our times, lockdown but globally shared... the clever reworking of the Loch Lomond chorus, and the singing and musicianship are exquisite - contemporary folk of the highest order, Thank you Aoife and friends...please come to New Zealand!

Lovely song and beautiful vocals. I was surprised at the reference to the song "Loch Lomond", which is referenced is about a Scottish soldier whose soul, in death, returns to his beloved Scotland via the "low road". The song "Loch Lomond" was originally a pro-Jacobite song of Scottish nationalism against English governance. Romantic, yes, but in the sense that love (of country and ideals as well as a loved one) can be powerful, even in death. I'm not sure, even after a second (and third) listen to the lyrics, whether or not that's a deeper meaning that is intended, particularly in this time of pandemic.
