    Great video as always! I was glad to hear you use substrate with your adults, as I need to do that for humidity too. I have water in a kitty litter pan, but I also put about 3" of damp coco husk/cypress mulch in another kitty litter pan, then keep both pans on top of a layer of paper towel. Substrate in the litter pan makes enclosure cleaning simpler, because I can just lift the substrate pan out, and replace the paper towel underneath as needed. Re: bioactive - I just don't understand a bioactive setup in a typical enclosure - which ends up being more like a jungle/riverbank - for a snake that has evolved to live in a canopy environment.

I am considering getting a more arboreal setup than I have with the Guyana's and Suriname's and investing in one of GTPs, mainly because of your videos. Hi Gary. I’m wondering if you could give me some advice…how long should a 15/16 month old gtp take to move its bowels after being fed?It’s not as big as your one year manokwari you showed. Its a mixed local. I think it was sorong x aru x biak but not sure on the percentages of each locality. I just recently moved it onto rat fluffs were it had been getting two smaller prey items that had no fur. I fed it 12 days ago . There was only a slight bulge so I don’t think it was too big a prey item. Could it just be the introduction of fur and bone like you mentioned thats making it take longer?
    If a gtp that age had a blockage how would that be treated by a vet and is there anything a keeper can do to help if an animal that age had a blockage around the cloaca ?The temps are just a little bit higher than you mentioned and was misting every day exactly as you mentioned in this video basically keeping it the exact same as you except mines is heated from above.Am i just over thinking it worrying prematurely?
    Sorry for all the questions Gary it’s just it took me a while to save up for this little guy and i have wanted one for years and I don’t want to make any mistakes and I want to be giving it the very best chance to thrive as possible and i know you have decades of experience.
    Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks Gary.

    • @gsreptiles5606
      @gsreptiles5606  2 роки тому

      Every animal is different, however at that age, your animal should defecate every 10-20 days. As long as it is not impacted however (huge bulge near cloaca usually accompanied with tail hanging),then no need to worry! As a rule of thumb, just don't feed more than three meals consecutively without getting a bowel movement. I read humidity between 40 to 80% this wouldn't be constantly wet soil and there are plants w much lower watering requirements. What are the fresh air exchange requirements for GTPs? Haven't been able to find actual stats on that. Granted it may require a bit more technical knowledge but small exhaust and intake fans are cheap and easy to install. There's more and more info about how enriched environments improve neurological health in reptiles. Appreciate the advice in the video but it seems to be dismissive of how precisely an environment in a bioactive can be regulated.

    • @druckit
      @druckit 2 роки тому +2

      It’s not dismissive, is based on thousands of GTPs that have been kept in captivity for decades. If bioactive caused less RIs everyone would keep them that way. Healthy chondro > enrichment.
      An exhaust fan is likely to create a cold draft which is just as bad, unless your room is heated at 78+ degrees. It’s not just humidity but the bacteria that will breed in a bioactive setup. Remember WC snakes come riddled with disease.
      You can also provide enrichment with silk plants. If you want to keep a snake in a naturalistic environment there’s many other species better suited for that.

    • @gsreptiles5606
      @gsreptiles5606  2 роки тому +3

      Fresh air exchange requirement for GTPs? I'm not sure if anyone could answer that question, and I know I sure can't. Regardless, I sincerely love your thought process, and perhaps one day someone will perfect keeping chondros/emeralds in bio set-ups. No Cody. They are two different types of snakes, and ton be more specific, boas give birth to live babies, and pythons lay eggs. Thanks for watching!

    Ha ha. Love the hot takes.
    Disagree on the bioactive, but love the video.
    Tempted to argue about it, but 90% sure that you are baiting. Ha ha.

      Does this mean you're not going to name an isopod after me? :) Thanks for watching Jayd! Sincerely appreciate the commenting. #NotBaiting

    First time watching your videos. Just a recommendation - slow down! You talk amazingly fast. It's hard to keep up with the video when you talk so fast. The other comment is I would like to know more or see more about the heat you provide to your baby chondros. Where is the heat tape or heat mat. You never showed it.

      Patrick, you're an old guy. No offense intended! I'm also an old guy! However in the world of UA-cam, one needs to speak quickly! (I don't make the rules) Regarding the heat tape, it's in the back of my enclosures in what I would call a "standard" install. Secured to each shelf, with the boxes resting directly on top of it. I hope that helps!

    this is NOT bioactive, just because you put dirt and a plant in it does not mean its bioactive. Also this is not how you would set up a proper bio set up. Its not even close to big enough for one thing.
