The case of Laetitia Hubert is just truly bizarre. The fact that she kept placing high enough at the French Nationals and European Championships to qualify for the Olympics meant she must have had moments during competition outside of the Olympics when she was able to land enough of these jumps. So do we chalk this up as merely a mental thing, Olympic jitters if you will? However, I feel that there’s gotta be some sort of tech issue with her jumps too…It seems that she had the habit of leaning a bit too forward prior to take off. She also skated with more speed than she seemed to be able to control. I often found that her choice of music also was faster and “bigger” than she could skate.
Yeah, really weird. You can attribute her falls in her first Olympics to jitters, but she took part in enough major international competitions over the years. It's like she went through wild swings in performance. When she's on, she's a world class athlete; but when she's off, she looked like someone who just learned how to skate.
She also was in the final group. I don’t think I’ve ever been forgiven by my family for this. I was laughing so hard I almost died. The commentators last words in 1992: “The poor thing, she’s just exhausted”. I was rolling on the floor.
As someone who skated, she skates like someone with very inconsistent jumps who believes herself to be a big day skater. I remember including a triple salchow in a program when I was 13. I had never landed it before. I was convinced I would in competition. Close but no cigar. Lol. All her jumps look like WTF. Let’s see what happens.
Despite her tendency to fall, she retained a good sense of humour. I remember watching her going through her FP to the music in a practice session at the 1995 Worlds in Birmingham (UK). She fell hard on a triple loop in the slow section, got to her knees as she was still sliding across the ice and then waved her arms gracefully above her head as she hurtled towards the barrier.
Awwwwww...I still remember watching her at the 1992 Olympics, and, halfway through her long program, I was yelling at the television "No...don't jump...DON'T JUMP!!" She did mature into a strikingly beautiful woman, and her ice presence got much stronger. Sad that her jumps did not.
I know right… she screwed up every Olympic game. She was one of the greatest skaters at World’s… When she fixed her jumps she was worthy of a World medal… that never came.
She actually skated so good in smaller competitions, like the Trophee Lalique. It let her qualify into the Olympics. However when it came to the big stage she screwed up almost always. The only good Olympic/World Program is the 1992 Olympic OP and the 1992 Worlds Long Program.
Not in her technique, but in her takeoff. If you watch her clean programs you can see when she doesn’t force her foot over the edge her axis becomes straight again.
@@Kiridiam Not always. Hubert had a solid edge technique, especially on her 3Lo and 3S. However, she twisted her body so much, she had enormous prerotation. She did not have time to catch herself over the edge. She also rushed her jumps.
And out of four trips to the Olympics her best result ended up being her first, the infamous Human Zamboni performance. I was actually a big fan of her skating back then which wasn't easy since she was so up and down. She went from dead last at Lalique to beating the reigning world champion one week later at Nations Cup!
A lot of people thought she had medal prospects in Nagano after that result... And looking back - if she had skated the way she did at Lalique the bronze was well within her grasp. She was just wildly inconsistent. But no question at her best she was medal worthy.
Bless her heart. Kudos to her for not giving up. I'm amazed how some of these skaters have such stiff techniques in their jumps and skating in general. Vanessa Gusmeroli, Tatiana Malinina, Maria Butyrskaya, Tatiana Liashenko all come to mind. When I look at someone like Laetitia.. When do you tell yourself it may be good to draw inspiration from other skaters who have solid skating technique and then I wonder how much of her federation didn't have her best interest. Anywho.. She deserves an award for most falls at an Olympics in total and for not giving-up.
She was a really strange case, along with Josee Chouinard. They both had great speed, and very solid jumping technique but would completely crumble in competition. Hubert was capable of all sorts of 3/3 combinations. I bet in practice both of these skaters could outskate a bunch of the World medalists over the years. And the judges seemed to like them too - when Hubert didn't completely bomb at Worlds she was 4th x2, and 6th x2. If she had just put together 2 clean programs at a Worlds she would be on the podium multiple times. She was Junior World Champion at one point too.
@@joccskates4497 I think what you're describing are symptoms of what happens to her mental state when she's in competition. I highly doubt she was skating too fast and having problematic takeoffs causing her to botch her jumps constantly everyday in practice.
From what I remember, she had a phenomenal, crowd pleasing short program which qualified her to skate in the last round of long program skaters, meaning among the medal winners. She skated last. Yes, this performance was disappointing....wish her short program was available to watch again!
This is tough to watch. Like most French single skaters, she was frightfully sloppy. Absolutely no attention paid to her line (both upper and lower body were a disaster). I remember I would scream at the tv “straighten you arms.” She skated hunched over, no connection to the music. And this list is far from exhaustive. Thank goodness Dick Button wasn’t commentating. He would have told her to go back home and reconsider skating period. I don’t care if you fall on every jump, it is you job to give the performance of your life. But this also goes to training. Not sure if she was difficult to train or she had crappy coaches, but the French don’t have the best reputation for producing the most finished skaters in the world.
Poor woman although she did beat Tara Lipinski not long before the Olympics at Trophee Lalique. I think the Olympics like lots of athletes, aka Kurt Browning, Kirstie Marshall etc some people just freeze up & can't perform properly!
Jumps, jumps and jumps that's all people talk about now of figure skating. Figure skating (artistic skating) consists of a lot more then just jumps or they would call it skate jumping. Why do people like to post just failed jumps and not the complete program? At least she qualified for 4 Olympic games and didn't disappear after just one time.
People can post about whatever the hell they want. Your arrogance shouldn't dictate what people can upload. If you want a particular compilation, then stop being so lazy and put one together yourself.
@@kanyebreast6072 Gosh, asking a simple question can cause such a distructive and negative reaction? At least I'm old enough to have a seen all of her routines live at the Europeans and Worlds in which she shined. I just don't understand why people like all of this negativism.
Because jumps are by far the highest scoring and riskiest elements in any program. You can't land the jumps then unfortunately you are going nowhere fast.

I always knew her performance in '92 was a complete meltdown, but it doesn't look like 1994 was much better... In 98 I was old enough to remember watching when she bombed in the short... I can't believe she would go back to that music ever again after the disastrous performance in Albertville...
I was going to say that I wondered why she even attempted a triple loop since she never landed it, but then she did. I feel sorry for her but these efforts were pretty pathetic.
She was a fantastic skater but did not have the mental strength needed. Moreover, she was very fast on the ice, gaining a high speed before her jumps, which was very risky because she jumped quite high in the air. That's a shame because she was very talented and a genuine sense of aesthtics an choreography...
Maybe the Olympics shook her. She was always on top at the Lalique, Nations Cup, and Skate Canada, and consistently medaled in them. In the Worlds she hit most her jumps and did triple-triple combinations consistently. Although she did do a 3Lz-3T combination in her later Olympic years she was highly inconsistent on the ice. I think her case is similar to Chouinard’s because they had perfect warmups but trembled on their programs. When she was on top, you could compare her jumping skill to Lu Chen, Chouinard, or even Yamaguchi. I wonder why she screwed up so much in her programs.
Not popular to say but KV is a drug cheat who should never compete again. Aside from the fact that Russian athletes should never be allowed to compete again, period.

I think in 97-98' what gave her that push was her making it to the Champion Series Final / Grand Prix Final which came out nowhere.

That disastrous sequence at 00:57 had me howling 😂 there was something oddly epic about her screw ups - no other skater could come close 🏆
After deleting most of her choreography in 01/02 season, she became much more consistent than ever with empty programs.
