In the mid 90's he and his band were stuck at the truck stop (where I worked) for a few hours while their tour bus was being repaired. I was the shoe shine stand contractor and shined 2 pairs of his boots while they were there. (I'm a white woman in my 70's now, about the same age he was when we met.) We had a great conversation about all sorts of things. He tipped well and afterward bought me dinner in the restaurant. He was an incredible musician on several instruments, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, drums, viola and mind blowing fiddle (sings too). He played every genre, from jazz to country, blues, rock, folk, electric, acoustic. He excelled with it all. I asked him which type of music he preferred. He said "Whatever I'm playing at the moment". He was a Grammy winner and spent a lot of time in Europe where he was, years before, more well known and welcomed.
Wow, I sm 68 and never heard of him! Yet in 60s & 70s I was listening to Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, Mississipi John Hurt, Johnny Hartsman & so many more. I missed out!
Wasn’t he wonderful? Sweet man. He came to a gig my band was having at our little cafe in Nacogdoches, Texas in the late 90’s. We thought the person in the opening act who announced his presence was tripping or lying about it being him, who danced in during her set with a lady on each arm. I’m not sure I could’ve played if I had really known that it was Gate right there listening to my band, my guitar playing, and really known how talented and important he was. Especially in our neck of the woods. Every time I saw him out at music events, he would nod and wave at me. Too tremendously cool.
Spent a lot of time with him one weekend here in Birmingham back in the late '80s. He was a 💯% 😎 and gracious; my daughter still remembers meeting him when we picked her up from school in his brown Chevy Van....how that came about is a story in it self
I was so privileged to have known Gate and worked on his 2 houses off of hey 11 in Slidell,LA. I would hang out with him at night at the Dennys ruck stop off of Gause Blvd. Or have dinner at Palmettos . He didn't take anyone's bs but if he liked you he was such a great friend . I always felt like the good lord blessed me when I met Gate . I grew up listening to him and loved the music that him and the Great Roy Clark did together FANTASTIC STUFF . EVERY thing he did was FANTASTIC LOVE YOU GATE !!! SUCH AN HONOR
A friend of mine, Cal Freeman (RIP), was Gatemouth's stage manager and played pedal steel in his band for several years. Cal played with several famous artists/musicians throughout his career and he told me that in his opinion, Gatemouth was the most talented musician of them all, and the one he enjoyed performing with the most. They were also good friends.
He was a great musician with a wonderful personality. Gatemouth Brown is the only one that I have ever seen play the blues so great on a violin. His style of music is one for the ages. I was fortunate to see him is concert several times, each was a wonderful experience. RIP, You are surely missed.
When you like him maybe you should try Albert Collins Robert cray and there are so many more. I'm sure you will enjoy the blues. I mean if you enjoy this music it's a pretty good start. Masterclass
Not blues even, I would call him the og guitar player. Seriously, no one gives him enough credit for hid playing. Everyone brags about Hendrix, Clapton, etc... But Gatemouth was also a legend. His technique, his expression, his solos and little breaks are just amazing.
This song makes me smile as well. An I found Mr. Brown back in the 80’s as usual i got distracted w other things and other musicians but i came back because he w out a doubt is truly one of the greatest musicians.
Somewhere between Otis Rush and Buddy Guy, there stands Gatemouth Brown. The man could do some fine fiddle work, too. There probably wasn't anything with strings he couldn't play.
This is living proof that CGB could make a fiddle and guitar TALK! What an amazing talent he was!!! Should have been MUCH MORE famous... Waaaay better than BB King
WOW what a great band! They play together employing DYNAMICS which is a word and a concept you don't see much with bands these days. The variation in loudness between notes and phrases.- Dynamics are why these guys sound so good. (besides being great musicians. So much better to me than playing at one volume - FULL BLAST all night long. Nothin' wrong with playin' loud but when Clarence and this band play they show that they're old pros. I Love it.
Damn that Ol’ Boy can play now!! Never seen someone pick a guitar and saw on a fiddle all in one song!! That’s pure Americana Ol’ son!! And those blues licks one the fiddle mmm-umm tasty!!!!!!
It's crazy to me that Jimi Hendrix's name is all over the place to this day, but Clarence Brown's name is almost nowhere. I feel he was just as talented and impactful. He was a guitar wizard, played several instruments and even played the violin/fiddle like a guitar. He did really well but was amazing enough have gotten way more recognition.
I believe the two were of a different caliber. Clarence is an extremely talented blues player but Jimi was an extremely talented guitarist and songwriter in general. Clarence plays the blues And his craft had been known for a long time and he was extremely good at his craft. Jimi on the other hand took his blues roots and pushed it to other boundaries into other genres and new techniques never seen before, the timing of Jimi’s arrival and his pushing of the boundaries are what made him a legend, if Jimi stuck to playing blues like this he would not have nearly the same status as he does. He took blues that was played like this and turned it into a fusion of several different genres, using new never before seen technology, and techniques nobody every really thought of before and turned the music world upside down. Clarence is a blues musician down to the roots but Jimi was something more if that’s understandable, especially in a very short life.
@@RSPSgamerHD Yep. I discovered Clarence back in the 90s when I fell in love with the guitar. I saw him do things with a guitar that just blew my mind. No gadgets. Yea. Jimi did have more mass appeal because of the stuff he played along with his playing style and songwriting. He definitely was special.
i met him in Denver Colorado doing a solo act at a strip bar. They had a room with a quarter per game pool table, bigger than the typical bar box. I went there during intermission at which time the girls began to strip and Gatemouth showed up, introduced himself and we played pool until it was time for his next act. We played again after his set and I went back and played pool with him every night until his gig was over. He was loads of fun and being a musician myself I had loads of questions and learned all about his musical history and he was a pretty good pool player too. A perfect gentleman, win or lose.
Everyone here seems to think he’s playing a violin, but that’s actually a viola. You don’t get that low C on a violin. In any case, he’s playing the hell out of it.
There is something of Injustice with these Legendarios del Blues, I say it because I have seen this scenario with Steve before with Clarence and the truth There is no point of comparison Amazing Clarence

What an awesome man to have as your great grandfather! Glad he loved sharing his amazing talents with us music lovers!

Gate Mouth Brown was my neighbor as a baby, what a blessed child to have him sing me a lullaby. Still love the blues.
How lucky are you!!? Cherish the memory!
Wow! How little is the world sometimes
Wow unbelievable 😍😍😍

You forgot about " Papa " John Creach, Hot Tuna
I love the bass on this track . Backs the guitar and all so well.
Harold Floyd just lays on the bottom perfectly on bass.
Tudo é uma sincronismo perfeito
Dynamics are so great in his playing.
This guy is a bad ass musician I never really listened to blues but I can listen to this guy all day
His jazz and country is badass as well. Crazy I haven't heard him till now

When it comes to blues everybody else is just backing up. Heard him in the 60s
gatemouth always delivers
This man brought something different to the table. He's like the Einstein of the blues with his technical abilities

He is great, and I wish Gatemouth was still with us. WOW!
An incredibly gifted musician who never rested on his laurels.
Never looked back, he stood his ground. Always came up with something innovative adn fresh.
That tone! THIS is real talent!
this should have a million views!! And his smile in infectious!!
This just makes me smile, late to Gatemouth and his style but like they say better late than never!
This song makes me smile as well. An I found Mr. Brown back in the 80’s as usual i got distracted w other things and other musicians but i came back because he w out a doubt is truly one of the greatest musicians.
Just stumbled on this guy the other day. Sooo good, he brought me back to the blues. Love it
I love it , he makes his instruments talk!! Genius!
Sooo much talent here
Love the "my momma done told me" guitar break ... The amazing fiddle --with bow or thumb!-- And everything else!
The best of times.
Walking out to hear, this off the hanger artists, at uptown Tipitina's.
Gatemouth what a sweet soul.
They don't make them like that anymore. Pure poetry in music and voice.
Gatemouth was truly gifted
One Great Blues King!!!
Somewhere between Otis Rush and Buddy Guy, there stands Gatemouth Brown. The man could do some fine fiddle work, too. There probably wasn't anything with strings he couldn't play.
Some folks just born with it.
Been listening to gate mouth for over 25 years
You have good taste!
Unbelievably talented man.
His phrasing so awesome
Oh, man, just what I needed to hear. Thanks
This is living proof that CGB could make a fiddle and guitar TALK! What an amazing talent he was!!! Should have been MUCH MORE famous... Waaaay better than BB King
ChuckyT not a fiddle ;) it’s a viola!! Which is unheard of for any jazz or anything other than classical!
Definitely has more chops.
There is no vocal comparison to BB King! BB’s voice just got better with age. Screaming heart and soul into the mic. Come on now.
It's not a competition, they are both treasures.
@@wilcorrigan2970 thank you.
My biggest regret musically is I never got to Gatemouth live 😢
I sure miss seeing Gate.
wow what talent

Esse cara é o cara. O mestre. Tbm

Love how he plays that little Blues In The Night section at 2:03
Fantastic artist!

I heard from my dad (who played at shows with Gate back in the day) that he used to answer the phone with his fiddle
Absurdo!!!! Sem palavras!!!! Perfect!!!!!!
Doesn't get any better than Gate and Albert ❤️

Love Gatemouth. Is that Jack Black playing bass?
Great Blues all the way🎵🚀
His importance to Texas blues is only surpassed by Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker & Lightnin' Hopkins.

Who needs any vocals when ye got Clarence Gatemouth on guitar and Violin?
At least THIS has some of Gatemouth's unique 'talking guitar' playing.
