As a child in the early 1960s I use to spend time in my grandmother's bookshop. Down the street about three houses and across the street was a bar (Eddie Price's) right off Tulane''s campus. One day outside of the bar, on the back of a flatbed truck there was a band playing music I had never heard before in my short life. I was mesmerized. I've been trying to play guitar like that now for over 50 years. Of course it was Clarence Gatemouth Brown.... I don't remember what his backup band called themselves back then. But dear God that was one hell of a thing.
This is fantastic! Carlos changes his characteristic style and plays pure blues, Gatemouth kills it on fiddle and guitar, and... I really have the highest respect for Eric Demmer on sax, he takes a short solo but my hair stood on end... the tone, the soul of that man. I don't know why Eric Demmer is not a superstar himself, recognitionwise I mean.
I did the sound for Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown several times when his band was Gate's Express, later known as Louisiana's LeRoux who had several hits, including "New Orleans Ladies" written by guitarist and lead singer, Jeff Pollard and bass player Leon Medica.
2 heavyweight guitar players, plus Eric Demmer and a great horn section and band. Carlos and Gatemouth, r u kidding me! Greatness!! RIP Gate, gone in 2005
Best Blues fiddle I’ve ever heard. Gate had such a unique style. You can hear the T Bone influence but Gate threw in a touch of Cajun and country. Truly one of the greatest multi instrumentalist Bluesman to walk the planet. Great to see these young guys laying it down. Carlos is diggin it big time🇺🇸
My first ever Blues LP was Gatemouth's "Gates on Heat"...led me on a journey in the Blues I can't get off. His use of guitars, electric violin, harmonica and Hammond organ still blows me away. This great track was on it. Here brilliantly played by Gatemouth with Carlos Santana.
I knew Clarence from Beale st , he used to sit under an oak tree in the middle of the square and play day and night , this had to have been an awsome experience for him ,and not to long after when this would’ve been ,he passed with a mardis gras style parade. God bless Clarence “gatemouth”Brown .
I saw him do a solo acoustic show in Dallas at Poor David's Pub. I requested this & he played it. The Dallas Morning News called it one of the top ten shows of the year. He packed a pistol every where he went & collected the money himself from the promoter.
Gate is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. He had a feel for swing that was almost supernatural. I met him in The Yale Hotel in Vancouver and blurted out that he was a big musical hero of mine. He gave me that sly grin and asked if I had any weed on me! I said I didn't just as a friend walked by who I knew always carried weed, so he took him out for a quick hit or two. Later on he played a song for me I had requested which I thought he'd forgotten all about. A great character and on hell of a guitarist!
I was at that show (late 80’s). Gate trusted me to keep his pipe loaded that night! Great show. Hate thoroughly enjoyed himself, as did all in attendance. After the show we went with him to a late night/wee hours Soul Food restaurant. I had smothered pork chops, Gate had chitterlings, my buddy decided to have what Gate was having but didn’t get far into them. Gate teased him about it in a typically Gatemouth manner !
I had the pleasure of working a venue Gatemouth played four times in a couple years. That was During the eighties. Twenty years later he hadn't lost a beat.
Was at a small club in Dallas years back....THEY ran outa tables and he and his band wound up sharing our table when taking breaks....got to talk with him a bit about his personal life as a kid ...I think he said around the Orange TEXAS AREA......Said he spent some time across the state line in Louisiana also....
Gol dang! 2 things: 1) I wish there were a LOT more 'nad-powered violinists in the world; 2) I wish Carlos would try this hard to assess a genre and craft his solos to fit more often. He's EXTREMELY good and interesting when he gets out of his box, but he seems to feel people want the cliches.
PLENTY OF TRASHY NOISE BUT BROWN GIVES SOME PEOPLE A CHANGE TO SHARE THEIR ABILITIES TO THE PUBLIC. BROWN HIMSELF SHOULD PLAY SOLO AS HE IS GOOD AT GUITAR AND VIOLIN.
Can you imagine being a little kid and having a lullaby like this, I did! Gate Mouth Brown was my neighbor as a child!!! No wonder I love the blues!!!
Now that must of been cool. Did any of his musicianship rub off on you?
You are so lucky i heard that Clarence was very nice!

I wish I got to meet him! Folks that knew him down here in LA loved him!

Thanks for the blues, Gatemouth. RIP. And, hats off to the great Eric Demmer, on sax; still alive and well.
Thanks for the sax players name. He killed it!!!

Wow, your a lucky cat.

Damn...blues violin WOW. This is a master class in blues playing from every musician on that stage. God to play with cats that good is a blessing.
Absolutely great song, great version of it, nobody does it as well as Gatemouth, and what talent joining him in playing it!

Have you heard the album he made with Roy Clark called Makin' Music? Released in'79 I believe.

Gate brings out the best in Carlos.
How could you not like this well knit group..enjoyable music.
SO Good it brings tears to the eyes just listening to it! This had to be one Hell of a show to be there in person!

Glad I was there - two masters hard at it!
What a great memory!
Stephen Sanmichele master and pupil is what i see.
more than two masters! Demmer is the real deal, and not just him, everyone there. (sometimes Gatemouth seems like about 5 masters just by himself!)
What he did with that fiddle as amazing WOW!!!!
Armando Dieguez It's a viola.
Good friends always turn you onto amazing music
❤️ this is spectacular, what a talent Mister Brown
I am friends with that Sax player. Can't wait to ask him of this experience! He's still a big 'ol boy and can still toot that horn like mad!
So what's his name ?
Don't keep it a secret.
@@keithclark486--- looks like a guy from Houston named Eric Demmer
RIP Gate. Got to see you twice. Stunned both times at your versatility. Thanks.

I love it. Forcing Carlos to rethink the blues!! Too cool.
Of course "Gate" and Carlos are great, but so is that whole damn band!
I had the pleasure of working a venue Gatemouth played four times in a couple years. That was During the eighties. Twenty years later he hadn't lost a beat.
Happy 75th Birthday to Carlos Santana!
Carlos was originally a blues guitarist, hence his Santana Blues Band. Good to see him kill it on the blues here.
I don't remember ever hearing Carlos play the blues before.
Santana was originally known as the Santana Blues Band.
Straordinari

Char'es Mingus used these lyrics on Devil Blues (he gives Gate credit for the lyrics) on his "Changes One" album from 1974.

Gatemouth is always killer, but man that piano player is tasty as hell. Wow!
