Im 14 and im learning to drive our 1964 Fordson super major (new performance). So far ive been pushing the clutch all the way down even though its got a 2 stage clutch too. The main problems are that our tractor DOESNT have power steering, and I live in the Cotswolds (Gloucestershire, England) which is pretty much just hills! This video has helped a lot, thanks!
I recently decided to fix my grandpa's old tractor that has been sitting in the tractor house for over 10 years now and I like to thank you for showing me the basics on my Ford 2600 tractor this video helps out alot especially for someone who knows nothing about tractors. I like to thank you guys at everything attachments for helping with how to videos. I really appreciate the videos that show you how to use the implements as well. With out your videos I would have no clue how to use them properly. Its only been 1 month that I've been using the tractor and I already feel like a pro, thank you. 😀
thanks to your vid, I'm am x bartender now.I. replied to an ad ,and the guy laughed when I said I didn't know anything about tractor work .reluctantly he hired me because nobody else applied, after the first week , he let go of some workers and bumped me to $19.00 an hour. not bad for a city boy.thankyou so much !!! it's funny some of us cant remember learning to drive tractors, big trucks, skidders, or things like running chainsaws, falling trees, or milking cows, etc. We just already knew it from watching and doing it so young we cant remember back that far. But you'd have to show me how to function in a starbucks or a nice restaurant or club. I've never been in any of them. I knew a farmer who ate at McDonalds for the first time in his late 30's. I have 4 uncles all who have never done any job but logging and farming, and none of them have ever even been to a McDonalds or a shopping mall. Crazy what's normal everyday stuff to one man needs to be taught pre-school like to another
My Grandfather owned an International Harvester - dealership / repair shop - in Patten Maine. He gave us some rides on tractors. I never had a clue - how these things work. They're pretty complicated. For "me" the only REAL tractors are the RED ones. But - to each his own. God Bless all our farmers.

Thanks for the great video! I bought my Ford 2000 from a dealer here and the only instructions for a first time tractor owner was, be careful. I have had to figure a LOT out myself but this has been a huge help. Still trying to learn all the parts and levers but this helps. Thanks!
draft control adjusts the position control to keep it at one level,kinda like the set speed button on your cruise control. pto stands for power takeoff outlet. it is the little thing that spins in the back to run mowers,rototillers and such. and for some of the newer tractors everything is electronic. you will never compleatley understand untill you use a real farm tractor. nobody will understand tractors and all of their funtions untill they use them!

Ted, I have been watching all of your videos for the past couple of days. I'm going to sell my little city house in a couple of years and purchase some acreage. I've never been around a working farm, but I did raise milk goats, chickens, and rabbits. I also raised earth worms for compost. I didn't even know what questions to ask when going to look at tractors. What I like about your videos is that you are not assuming that your audience knows everything (because I know nothing) and you present the information in a way that is understandable. I will be looking for you in a couple of years. I would feel comfortable buying from someone like you, because I know you would educate me, and I don't think you would sell me something I don't need. I once bought a tractor for a small 29 acre place, and I bought from someone I trusted. That old Farmall needed a complete overhaul, and it ended up costing me more than if I had purchased a newer used model. I still had problems and didn't know where to find implements. Thank you very much for these videos. Now I won't be running a small place by myself because I will have you.
My manual says for implements that float like a mower to use some draft control for things that cut into the ground to push draft control forward and not use it so now I am alittle confused by the way I just bought a tractor and have never used it so I guess I will re read the manual.
Haven't driven a tractor since I was ten (turned 40 this year) Had to get it started, reverse out a garage and operate the front mounted forklift on just such a beauty last night, and I'm proud to say I still got it.
Question for you, Do you have to start from the first gear? Or can you start directly in the 2nd or 3rd? If you start in the 2nd or 3rd, how can you prevent from it jumping forward too fast - put the throttle low and then ease it higher? I'm volunteering at an event where I have to use their Farmhall to tow a trailer full of passengers to and from a parking lot, and want to figure out how to use the throttle-clutch-gear system ahead of time. I know I will need to accelerate to 10-15MPH for the straight shots, but want to figure out how to reach those speeds once leaving the passenger pickup areas.
Jagger Osseck Some tractors wont let you shift on the move (some old air cooled German tractor I drove a while back would). I had to put it it high 4th revved the engine and did my best to let out on the clutch slowly. this one was kinda like a racing clutch where i had about 1inch of movement between engaged or not. tell your passengers to hold on and WHAT EVER YOU DO REMEMBER that you HAVE TO push in the clutch because brakes alone aren't going to stop it. DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE CLUTCH! :^P I learned the hard way(ish). thankfully I was in a low gear and my dad was there to remind me in time. ( I was little at the time. That's my excuse and i'm sticking to it.)
+Jagger Osseck I'd tend to start in 2nd, not 3rd. To start in higher gears, you need to have enough revs to not stall when you let the clutch up. Give the tractor quite a bit of throttle and then let the clutch out very, very slowly to stop it jumping foward. After you are in gear and aren't going to stall, kick the throttle back a bit and slowly increase it again. This should give you a fairly smooth start but when starting in the higher gears you have to be prepared for a bit of a jump!
Farmall the best tractors ever. Like you said put it in the gear you want then ease the throttle to the speed you want. Passengers i would think second or third, forth can get pretty fast etc.
Love it man!!! I used to own one of these and it ran flawlessly and looked brand new no problems but unfortunately i believe my dad sold it, he made a huge mistake and gave up an amazing tractor, i miss it so much :(
My father is a farmer here in Brazil and I'm willing to follow his career and first he did not teach me to drive the tractor, it is dangerous to think of other things and I'm crazy about tractors, my father let me plant the whole farm because I think fun.You are my favorite deserves to be congratulated.
Nice old FORD tractor, it is similar to mine a 74 Ford 3000 gas that I restored and added a JD front end loader and I also have a small back hoe for it along with a 14" single plow and a 5 ft back blade. it's been a good old tractor and very powerful for what I"m using it for.nice job....
Good info! My father in law has a 6600 probably late 70’s, but he passed away, and a lot of bush hogging needs to be done, and my brother in laws don’t have time, so when I retire in a couple years I plan on doing it.
Hey there Can you also use the draft control ? (Hope I remember correctly) In a way auch that the implement is in a float position over the ground ? If you wanna use a snow shield for example.
In our ford 3600, we have major problem with gears, somehow the gear stick gets dislocated from the gears all the time and we can’t change gears unless we open the top of gearbox and readjust the gear stick again. Any suggestions will be great thanks

Can you please tell me what the F--S knob does? ours seems frozen and snapped off when we put a little pressure on it. Also the right rear foot peddle it attaches to the rearend in two places.
Question. Just bought a 59 ford workmaster 600 and the gears, while they still are able to be shifted, seem to give me a bit of an issue...seems I have to push directly downward on the shifter to get it in gear...im not all too familiar with tractors that old, would that just be a common symptom of its age or a more serious issue
I bought a Ford 3600 a couple of years ago and at that time I had no idea it was so remarkable. The adjustment in the clutch is maxed out and I am going to have a new clutch installed and expect to have it cost a bit of $ I’m feeling it will be money well spent. I plan to have that in my shed for a long time.

Thanks Ted. You actually showed something that I had backwards in my head. My tractor is old with many coats of old crappy paint. Which includes which way the draft control sensitivity works. Ill be doing some research on which way to set it on my 85 ford 2110.
I love the old tractors with all the levers, and knowing the purpose of the levers. I don't need a tractor, because I live in the city. But I would love to operate one (play with it) to actually try all the levers, try turning with the single brake. Play with the 3 point hitch. Hook up some implements. I can't explain it but I love those machines.
Where do you live? I will let you come mow my property for $20/acre. I have a 30 acre ranch of which about half is maintained so I probably need you here twice a week minimum.
some models there is a 3 stage lever. the middle is newtral(un engaged) up is 1000 and down is 540. make sure the implement you are using is not 540 when you are running 1000. and on other tractors there is a few bolts on the pto housing you need to remove and just put in a pto with a bigger gear(comes with the tractor when you buy it) then bolt it back together.
My favorite part about this model is when you cut the wheel reel sharp. Plowing the front wheels, the power steering pump which is between your legs will blow its seal and all its scalding oil into your lap. Other than that, probably one of the toughest tractors made in its class. I use mine for woods cutting all the time.

Just purchased a ford 1600 and the throttle seems to be having a problem because if it's not held down the handle goes back up to the top and shuts off.
I watched quite a few of your videos, all well worth my time. i saw you plow, disc or harrow around palm trees on some other clips, it tells this canadian boy you are not only 2 or 3 counties away. Too bad I would definitely give you a chance at my business next time.
When you pointeds out the draw bar you should said THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE you should hook a chain to on a Tractor (Note excluding a front bumper guard) people die every year from hooking chains around the axles or upon a three point empliment.
Thanks for the video...was nice to hear all of the detail that you went into verses how many other videos me and my husband have watched that they don't tell us much about the specifics of the tractor. However one thing that we didn't hear you discuss is the 3-point hydraulic and if it has down pressure instead of just the gravity-down feature like our Ford 9n and 8n has. Does this tractor have the pressure-down for the 3-point arms? One nice reason for the pressure-down feature is when having a posthole digger attached to the tractor and being able to force the auger into the ground getting it to cut in instead of only being able to rely on the weight and gravity to drive the auger into the ground. Another thing we would like to see is what different loaders are an option for this style tractor. We are considering a Ford 4600 Diesel and need some experienced advice :o)
Thanks for watching! Not really any tractors comparable in size to this one will have down pressure on the 3pt hitch. You'd have to move up to 120+ HP before down pressure is available.
didn't have an option to watch with sound, so it's unclear for me- do you only use your right leg to drive? or do you need both legs? and is it different with different tractors?

I have 2 Ford 6600 and 1 5000 and I never knew what draft control was for , makes total sense.

I cannot get it back in,the nut was seized when I tried changing the seat.

Mine is a 77. Just put a water pump in it after 45 years. Great tractor.

Plowing the front wheels, the power steering pump which is between your legs will blow its seal and all its scalding oil into your lap. Other than that, probably one of the toughest tractors made in its class. I use mine for woods cutting all the time.

Thanks,great video. I have been having a Ford 1910 for three years and learned a lot from this video. I'd love to see more videos like this on operating them properly, safety, maintenance, hooking up implements. I always struggle to hook up my huge old heavy rotary cutter by myself. I watch all your tractor implement videos and a big fan.

Just purchased a ford 1600 and the throttle seems to be having a problem because if it's not held down the handle goes back up to the top and shuts off.

I watched quite a few of your videos, all well worth my time. i saw you plow, disc or harrow around palm trees on some other clips, it tells this canadian boy you are not only 2 or 3 counties away. Too bad I would definitely give you a chance at my business next time.
When you pointeds out the draw bar you should said THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE you should hook a chain to on a Tractor (Note excluding a front bumper guard) people die every year from hooking chains around the axles or upon a three point empliment.

Thanks for the video...was nice to hear all of the detail that you went into verses how many other videos me and my husband have watched that they don't tell us much about the specifics of the tractor. However one thing that we didn't hear you discuss is the 3-point hydraulic and if it has down pressure instead of just the gravity-down feature like our Ford 9n and 8n has. Does this tractor have the pressure-down for the 3-point arms? One nice reason for the pressure-down feature is when having a posthole digger attached to the tractor and being able to force the auger into the ground getting it to cut in instead of only being able to rely on the weight and gravity to drive the auger into the ground. Another thing we would like to see is what different loaders are an option for this style tractor. We are considering a Ford 4600 Diesel and need some experienced advice :o)

Not really any tractors comparable in size to this one will have down pressure on the 3pt hitch. You'd have to move up to 120+ HP before down pressure is available.
