  • My old 8n is in need of some love and care. She has had oil in the antifreeze for some time. I have been just to busy to tear into it. I have a little spare time and feel like I just can not put it off any longer. It has been freezing cold so no better time to stay by the heater in the barn. I am no expert mechanic by any means. Just a guy trying to keep the equipment going. Hoping to make it through another gardening season.
I am not 100% sure my issue is the head gasket. I am only assuming due to the fact there is oil in the antifreeze and not the oil. Hopefully this will be a quick fix and prevent any larger issues. Little did I know that the head gasket was my small problem. Watch to see what may be a deal breaker for the old 8n.

Dry Sleeves. No water leakage from the sleeves. Sleeves are a interference press fit. If a shop had that block and a sleeve is loose most likely would fix it the same way with locktite. Once a year torque the head and manifold bolts as they will loosen up.

I would suggest to keep on top of your tractor and develop a maintenance program. If you don’t, you’re
Going to be hit by a lot of unnecessary expenses. I don’t think your Grandfather would like your idea to avoid the proper maintenance for your tractor. Putting in sleeves with new piston ring Replacements. Once the overhaul is completely done, your Tractor will go on and on for many years. The 8,9n Ford is easy to work with. After the overhaul is done, the draining of acidic water in the radiator and with smelly oils to be replaced with good quality will add to the longevity of your tractor. Best to you!

You are 100% right when you said they cost more to repair than they're worth..especially when they cost around 1400.00 new depending on the year. I just sent 3k having the motor rebuilt and a few other things done on our '39 9n. We plan to restore it, but not completely , its still a working tractor! I think you should honor your Grandfathers memory an restore yours.

I thought about restoring it, but I think I like it as is. Just the way he used it for years. Every dent has a story. I believe all the dents could write a novel. From upside down in a creek to running over anything that got in the way.

They sell pistons that can go directly into the block without sleeves, your probably not going to run it enough to wear them out again, we don't run them for ten hours a day like old timers did, they are hobby tractors for most of us, mine has got 130hrs in the last 12 years, stay strong guys
