For the record, that was the stuff I actually scanned onto my computer when I was that age, so I definitely considered it my "highlight reel" at the time. I assure you, the only requirement to being an artist is a positive outlook on the concept of improvement. If you see a 7 year old that is amazing at art, it's because the kid has been instilled with confidence in that field due to the experiences that kid has had. No one has innate talent, but maybe innate confidence. You can gain that.
I need some artist friends. I think that's been my problem. I know how good I want to be, and I try to practice, but I just end up being lazy because there's no one I can talk to about my art. everyone I know just oohs and ahhs but that doesn't help me improve or motivate me.
I almost entirely draw from memory. Since I work in that fashion, the main thing I'm practicing when I actually do a reference is how things work... and not as much about being able to draw what I see. Although, being able to recognize colors the colors I see is important.
Finding good anatomy is always a tough one. For quick gesture practice I sometimes stop by "posemaniacs. com" but for in depth stuff, it's generally easiest to just use yourself. Most of the hand studies were just my hands... and a lot of the studies on how the muscles in the arm/torso turn and work were just using a mirror to really examine things. As for the second part, I definitely think that spending little time on LOTS of pictures is the way to go. The early moments are most important.
I'm shocked how I'm 16 and already experiencing mild anxiety, panicking about my future and my ability to draw. But to see you starting at 19 and becoming this good now is really inspiring and makes me immensely relieved and motivated. I'm going to start drawing 3 pages everyday for the next few years. If i don't then... fuck
I too am trying to learn to draw. I am in my fifties, if I need creative inspiration I certainly got it from your video. I learned from you. Keep sharing your trials in art, many of us go through the same things but don't share. Great heart felt story!
Thank you so much for this video, to know that you started at 19 and became as well versed in art as you are now is really good to hear, and inspiring. Being 19 myself and practicing/working towards a possible future in concept art its so nice to know that im not too late and that i still have the chance to not only improve but possibly make it!
Dude it would be awesome to have some sort of update video, its interesting to know what has happened in your life these past 4 yrs, like did your art style change or something like that. PLEASSSSSSSE
Oh man you are kinda like my hero here man. This video was so inspiring! That was one legendary skill building grind you went through, like one for the record books there. You give me hope for the future in the power of hard work and perseverance. Keep on keeping on my friend and I'll try and do the same!
I've been following your channel and your art for years, but now that I found out you were a big Snow Crash fan, you've cemented your spot even more as one of my favorite artists
I really liked the way that you showed your long journey. I know that every artist comes from a long journey too but tbh sometimes i forgot that they didnt start from where they are now and I think thats a real good motivation. Sinix u are one of my motivations, thanks for ur videos and thanks for keeping it real, bless u
Wow this is so similar to myself. Wanted to be a programmer, decided university and the drone lifestyle wasn't for me. Now I am trying to revive my old art days by finding inspiring people. I guess concept art is a good place to get started
14:20 I live in Finland and I'm going to move to Australia in the coming years. I'm looking towards getting into industrial design as a concept artist. Easily said I nearly choked when I heard that.
I found you at such an important time in my life, like you literally could not have written this to happen at a better time. ahh, you're really inspiring! and you and I share the belief that you can master something in 1-2 years if you're putting in a worthy workload. I know I'm 4 years late - but thanks so much for opening up to us all, and continuing to do so to this day. I think I've found my new favourite artist.
Thank you Sinix for your honesty. It's awesome to get the mind and mind set of another artist to keep yourself interested and involved. Peace to you and keep up the good work. ;)
This is so relateable, I hit a major slump and that mid-20's stress is getting me really bad, I'm only now trying to work my way back into doing a lot more drawing and properly improving, and your videos are a major help in that, so thank you for being an awesome and positive influence.
This is really great! The jump from the DA period to the concept art period is so drastic! I wish we could see/you had some more of the inbetween stuff. Otherwise it kind of feels like the classic: "Draw some circles, now draw the rest of the Owl" meme. I think a lot of the viewers might be at your DA phase level or maybe a little ahead of that but can't figure out how to make that jump to the early CA.org sketch book level. That in between period is where a lot of people give up.
I wanted to say that this, is by far, one of the best videos that you've posted. It's really amazing to see the genesis of an artist, some thing that we rarely get to see. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to do this. I think it's essential viewing for anyone who thinks that you just wake up knowing how to draw and design like a pro. Obviously, you don't. Thanks again...
I just turned thirty and decided after two years in college to go with my gut and study art. I can't go to school right now so I'm trying to learn on my own. The part of the video that actually helped the most was having you share your issues with anxiety and deciding to get help. I've struggled with depression most of my life and it always hits hard on my arty side. Anyway, after hearing what you have to say I feel both inspired to do more art and to maybe seek out some meds :)
When you talked about those 6 months blasting out 2 - 3 pages a day I thought "mad respect", but also "he's going to burn out". Sure enough. I'm glad you got over the slump and found what motivates you again. It's amazing what you were able to accomplish basically on your own. I think you may be one of those people who can do ANYTHING you put your mind to :) Keep it up. Thanks for the awesome tutorials.
I really admire how much you practised and how many different aspects of art you explored and improved. I honestly wish I had your commitment, I'm far too lazy about practise, though I try to draw everyday. I'm fairly disappointed by how few people react to what I do, so I don't have any courage to sit down and practise like I should, like you did. You're truly amazing.
it really motivates me - I mean guy who start with simple pictures, love drawing and realism for himself. Tried different things and have success. There is a difference between the study of anatomy and the skill to draw it. Many blogers show just anatomy. You show how to draw it - It is very helpful for me thank you!
hey sinix, im 19 and ive graduated from animation college but once i left and moved back home it felt like my momentum had stopped and spent a lot of time in anxiety and worry but this video comforts and inspires me so much. thank you
I never got into much guideline stuff, not that it's a bad idea, but I enjoy trying to form any piece of the body based on a different piece in a more procedural way. Just personal preference, but when I'm tuned it, it produces some good stuff. Anatomy was often photo ref, with more in depth studies of muscle/skeletal movement using my own body.
Wow, I mean what an emprovement in just 6 months. I draw about 4 years when I started art highschool and you just literaly crush me with that "sloopy" sketches. Keep it up, don't loose sight of your dreams and be motivated!
wow man youre greatly inspirational, the fact that you did not go to art school kind of takes a bit of pressure off my shoulders, because i unfortunately cannot afford to go to art school, i used to just draw once a week, im 16 yrs old and i want to be a concept artist, but now because of you i wanna draw daily pages and pages of sketches and studies in order to improve my self, ive been following your videos for quite a while but ive been looking forward to them alot more recently, keep it up!
First off hearing your story had so many similarities to mine and you give me inspiration to get better and better. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said we need to surround ourselves around other artists or else we'll stagnate. I love your progress and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.
I am 21 years old and i used to study environmental engineering but i never really liked it and now i am studying digital animation. I really love drawing and have been drawing for about 2 years and i just kind of hit a wall artistically where i was not really inspired, this video really brought back the passion for getting better for drawing every day as i used to do 1 year ago. I have also been really anxious and stressed out so thanks for your help Sinix.
Sir, you just earned a subscribe. I'm having a terrible bout of artist block in a time when I need to get better. My mid twenties have just been me, kinda floating, but I wanted to get back to my roots, back to what I love to do. I'm trying to find my passion again and you may be able to help
what you said about how being around motivated people influences you to be motivated is really true. I just got back into trying my hand at making music after a couple of my friends started a project
I still say conceptart(dot)org. A lot of people complain about how it's not what it used to be and none of their favorite artists are posting, but they forget that it's the natural progression of things. People just need to build up their own generation of community there and usher in a new period of rising stars.
Sinix! Thank you so much for your transparency, zero arrogance, and desire to help ^^ This video is hugely inspiring and I feel imbued with a fresh dose of hope : )
I come back to this video whenever I need some motivation boost as often I feel like a failure and making no progress. Always picks me up. A shame Conceptart.org disappeared now.
I love his way of analysing things about art and design and specially certain problems that almost all of us face ,which is staying consistent.its hard to get back into that creative routine when you stop practising. Bt I believe that with sinix advice it will be easier .Thanks man! And to the Bird-Really?
This was inspiring for me! I know it's an old video but I'm struggling with the same things right now... Like improving my art, finding a job, trying to be more productive and of course, handling the following frustration wich leads then to anxiety and so on and so on... I guess it is much easier when you know that these are common problems and that other successful artists faced the same things and find a way to handle it.
18:44 I love all of those. Also, I wish I would fill up as many sketch books as you did. It's crazy how you didn't get good until your 20s, I was actually struggling with thoughts that I was too old already to get anywhere. It was actually quite inspiring :).
If you live in a remote area, building online artistic friendships can be just as useful. Deviantart isn't great for this because of the structure of the site.. all interaction takes place on profiles.. so you always feel like you're either at "home" on your page or just visiting someone's "home" on their page. There's not a strong feeling that you're all mingling on common ground. Standard forum based websites are better for that.
I'm abit late here but I moved to another country as a teen. almost 5 years ago now. out of my education, went into foster care and became a teenage dad. I'm just starting to think about me now and I've always been good with art and visual intelligence. I'm very out of practice but I think I'm going to commit and try to find my way. I've always wanted to do art since i was 4 at school i was trying to draw people with eyelashes hands and fingernails when all the other kids could only think in stick shapes. thankyou for being honest and inspiring me. time to dig in.
i like the sequence of your video presentation 22:23 I like that numerical pattern!! plus your art has evolved over the years!! I will be watching your artwork more often!! at some point I was watching ALEX ROSS, because I like watching or seeing his paintings in youtube and by accident or coincidence your videos popped right into suggestion if you will!! so good video, I love your transition from stick figure to what you are doing now!!!!!
Really inspiring video. Just like Maxpound, your story had some similarities to mine as well. I also experienced that same anxiety, got depressed and my love for art really went away. But now I'm into art again. Starting off where I left, art fundamentals. Found your channel just recently and you have really helpful tips and tutorials. Knowing that you never went to art school and you got that good with art is what inspires me more cause I never went to art school too. Thanks for this video.
Great to see you making these videos. I found your conceptart sketchbook a couple years ago and really enjoyed looking through your work. Lots of props to you for deciding college was not for you and taking the time to find out what you wanted to do with your life. I'm currently doing my masters but have found out it's not really for me, but have to stick it out due to parental pressure. Someday hopefully I'll be a professional artist. Until then I'll be watching your videos for inspiration.
Woooooooooooooww! What a journey! This is gold! Deym.. It's really goes down to hard work and loooooooots of practice behind those mind blowing artworks out there.
Great video Sinix :) I love your tutorials, and its interesting to see we share similar ups an downs in the life of an artist. You are deffinately one of my greatest inspirations, keep doing what you do :) thanks
Very interesting to hear your story and how quickly you got to your level of skill. I went from not really drawing at all to suddenly wanting to be an artist around age 18, so I went and got a BFA and yet I'm way outclassed by every other artist I know. I'd be a good example of how college doesn't mean you're certain to be a great artist, but at the same time I know that if I hadn't gone to school I'd have never gotten to where I am now. Different things work for different people, I suppose.
To Be Honest i stumbled upon your youtube page by accident, how i don't remember, but your work inspires me to draw better. my main problem now is getting myself to sit down and have patience to do it. so keep up all the great work and thanks for an insight as to what helped you :D i guess its time to start trying to work on my fundamentals again...
Hey there Sinix, I just wanted to tell you what an inspiration you were to me when I first saw this video 5 months ago posted on 4chan /ic/ because I had this sudden realization that I wanted to be an illustrator, so I lurked the site because I was just learning how to draw, and I saw what an improvement you made with hard work and effort, so I started drawing and studying every day ad I've made IMMENSE improvement, I really wish I could show you. Anyways thank you for inspiring me and others.
wow incredibly inspiring man. So glad I stumbled across your channel. I am in the same boat when it comes to school and just recently I realized that to become a good artist you don't necessarily need to go to a fancy school just as long as you have the dedication and determination. :)
This makes me want to start drawing again. Really inspirational. I hope that you continue to work hard on your art and really kick ass. Seems like you've really found your calling.
Dude, youre a big influence to me now! I really really would like to meet you someday and talk about life, drawings and stuff... Really inspirational! Congratulations!
Haha, I don't know how I end up here, I'm watching the "Focus" video, someone talked to me and when I looked at my phone this is already playing. Happy I stumbled upon this video 😄
About sinix, by sinix. Thanks for all this content, i can relate my style to yours most easily so the learning process comes easier than other sources, call it luck.
the bird at the end was a cherry on top lol but hey you're a real inspiration, seeing your constant build up to, well, keep going onward, it was a bit uplifting. i'm not necessarily big on making art into a career, but it's definitely not gonna fade as a lost hobby. i mean if things turn out the other way then awesome but again you definitely give me a gentle push to keep goin' strong. thank youuuuuu. :)
Hi Sinix, I don't know if you'll ever read this, but I just wanted to let you know that your videos have been helpful and this video has been inspirational. Especially since being a self-taught artist requires a lot of discipline and patience. I am not a professional nor do I know if I plan to ever be one, but I do hope to one day become a better artist. Seeing your progress, I would really love it if you had a more in depth video on how you improved your skills over the years.
Really inspiring video, thank you so much for showing us a little bit of your past. I have been in a little bit of a slump and didn't know what to do. This helped a ton!
oh my god, you did improve very fast! i drew like you on the first page when i was ten and like on the second page when i was fourteen, but i haven't reached the art level of your third page and i'm seventeen now o.o okay, canines and stuff kinda work, but i still struggle a lot with humans
Great stuff Sinix, I've been procrastinating for quite a bit and want to get focused on digital art again. I'm fairly new to your videos, but I've really been enjoying them. Thanks again for this, look forward to more.
i am happy to see you not be a programmer.. i also studied programming and now i am an artist :) btw thanks for your nice videos i often see it while working..
I think it would be nice to have a community - right here! of artist online to be able to share ther own websites and progress and help other artists, and inspire as well. I can see being friends with many people who comment on here, and plus we all have a sinix design video to bring us together! UA-cams layout is kinda wonky for this unfortunately. But it would be awesome to have some friends to talk to about this stuff all the time. Also - Sinix! It was suuper cool of you to do this video :)
Also I feel like the main challenge to improving as an artist is to get out of what you know and UNLEARN. unlearn everything we have been taught, like heads are circles, limbs are straight, hair is black, etc. Nature is way more diverse than that. and unlearning can be a challenge. dont you agree?
For the record, that was the stuff I actually scanned onto my computer when I was that age, so I definitely considered it my "highlight reel" at the time.
Thank you sinix, once again thank you... you keep my flame keep burning
Oh man, those stick figure animations were friggin EPIC!! Love em.
Actually your stuff from 19 is really good for beginning!! You had the real basics in mind, and the proportions were on the right track
Really interesting, I didn't know you were the one behind those sick stick figures animations xD
wow incredibly inspiring man. So glad I stumbled across your channel. I am in the same boat when it comes to school and just recently I realized that to become a good artist you don't necessarily need to go to a fancy school just as long as you have the dedication and determination. :)
sinix doing voiceovers for his old stick figure animations is adorable
This makes me want to start drawing again. Really inspirational. I hope that you continue to work hard on your art and really kick ass. Seems like you've really found your calling.
You're really inspirational sinix, you help me a great deal when it comes to drawing and design, thank you for doing what you're doing!
It's really nice to see how much your drawing abilities have developed! It gives me hope haha :)
I love this video. It is very genuine.
Extremely inspiring, BTW I love Ragnarok Online too
Dude, youre a big influence to me now!
Hi Sinix,
I don't know if you'll ever read this, but I just wanted to let you know that your videos have been helpful and this video has been inspirational. Especially since being a self-taught artist requires a lot of discipline and patience. I am not a professional nor do I know if I plan to ever be one, but I do hope to one day become a better artist. Seeing your progress, I would really love it if you had a more in depth video on how you improved your skills over the years.
Just stumbled on your tutorials. Very inspirational and honest. Thank you!
Really inspiring video, thank you so much for showing us a little bit of your past. I have been in a little bit of a slump and didn't know what to do. This helped a ton!
Thanks for uploading this vid Sinix!
It's great to see the transition from anime/manga doodles to cool flashy digital artworks
oh my god, you did improve very fast! i drew like you on the first page when i was ten and like on the second page when i was fourteen, but i haven't reached the art level of your third page and i'm seventeen now o.o okay, canines and stuff kinda work, but i still struggle a lot with humans
What about now?
This whole thing, is me. Every step of the way. Thank you.
If 12 year old me could see this video, he would say the exact same thing.
did anyone get how to transition from 12yo-stuck-in-a-19yo weaboo to a complete art god?? Kinda missed that part
great video
i love learning about the people behind the channels, great stuff
you are such a big inspiration! Your videos have really helped me out. Thank you
Great stuff Sinix, I've been procrastinating for quite a bit and want to get focused on digital art again. I'm fairly new to your videos, but I've really been enjoying them. Thanks again for this, look forward to more.
Thanks for sharing man...your a huge inspiration to me and I'm sure to many many others
i am happy to see you not be a programmer.. i also studied programming and now i am an artist :) btw thanks for your nice videos i often see it while working..
This video is Very inspiring and a bit of a kick in the butt to keep getting better at my skill. I really appreciate that you kept it real. Thanks!!
Thanks for sharing so much in this video. I really needed a mental push to get some anatomy practice in today and this video has given me fuel.
Also I feel like the main challenge to improving as an artist is to get out of what you know and UNLEARN. unlearn everything we have been taught, like heads are circles, limbs are straight, hair is black, etc. Nature is way more diverse than that. and unlearning can be a challenge. dont you agree?
i don't know what to do with these emotions now! this was so inspiring!
