- 3 Large Sweet Potatoes, Peeled
- 1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar
- 1.5 Cups Light Brown Sugar
- 1/2 Stick of Salted Butter
- 1 Tbsp Water
- 1 Tbsp Ground Cinnamon
- 1/4 Tsp All Spice (or Nutmeg if you prefer)
- 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1 Tsp Lemon Juice

My mother and grandmother make them the same way. They are from Birmingham. The salt and lemon are a must for me as well. I don't eat others candied yams because I grew up eating them this way.

That was my problem too! I was putting raw sliced potatoes, sugar, butter, cinnamon, etc. in a foil pan, baking at 350 F for about 45 minutes to an hour. Now I know they must be cooked on the stove top. Got it!

This is how I make my candied yams. I love using orange zest. Sometimes I’ll even use a tbsp of rum instead of water. Really good
