[PSO2 NGS] How rare is too rare?

  • There's a huge elephant in the room here with PSO2NGS. It seems a lot of folks have been lamenting the microscopic drop rates of some items, even with boosters. We take a look at how things were in the original PSO, and offer some possible solutions.

    You know it is a bad sign when during the last headlines, the devs mentioned how the new 9 star weapons are being compared to Tisah in the tone as though at least 5-10% of the players had Tisah, and the best responses I got from others was laughter over the absurdity.

      I took it as weapons having unique Potentials like the Tisah. Granted, all the Potentials on Tisah suck balls, but still.

    The problem with drops is when the time certain absurdly rare weapons/armor becomes finally obtainable - they turn irrelevant and outdated, cause at the moment there is cheaper but better stuff along with another stupidly rare and even more better stuff.

    Dude, I remember staying up countless nights looking for an Agito back in OG PSO with my sis. I ended up finding a fake one after weeks of searching but even still I was SOOOOO happy that I did either way. It was the fact that rares were unique and stood out from base weapons regardless. I think this has been lost in the NGS, base game as well.
    I agree with your points here. Rares should feel good to find. They should look cool. They should have a special trait that's particular to that weapon or a really awesome potential. I'd even go as far to say that it should have a guaranteed fixa 5.

    I feel the real problem isn't totally just drop rate. But the fact that there's one or two weapon series per rank in NGS. Not even in PSO did it have only one series per rank. By allowing more series per star rank you give more dips to drop rate depending. And people can feel they are getting something for their time. pso2 base had many series and part of the game was sorting through what was best. I feel not having that and simplifying to one series is the best removes the confusion sure, but it also loses that discovery.

    When a weapon series has been out for about 2 months and there's currently only roughly 2 on the (ship 2)personal shop, I think it's safe to say that it's too rare, especially when you take fixas into account. As funky as getting the Kaizaar series was and all its controversy, I think it was the best step forward for weapon progression and obtaining a powerful weapon, but they were too afraid to try it again and instead opted for "Just farm this one thing" instead. Granted, farming growthments is worth it in the long run because Leciel drops are actually good. idk, like you said, it's just a really slippery slope on what a solid solution would be without it getting misinterpreted by the dev team.

    I like variety in weapon potentials. Things like a Double Saber that widens whirlwind, or a Talis that speeds up Tricky Capacitor gain on single target. But these should be as horizontal as possible, otherwise we will have the same issue as Tisah. The point is to make them fun!

    the main problem its we need alternatives ways to get the gear , Leciel and Dark Falz Aegis did it right .
    the question its why not make it an standard .
    BTW the LTQ drops was an insult , no Defi capsules , no fusers and over all i expected 1 gold sword and armor II per run at least

    This is an awesome explanation and a nod to classic PSO as for the drama iv had to enable streamer mode indefinitely to get some quiet time

    The drop rates in NGS is what led me to inevitably stop playing personally. I don't mind grinds (legit, I play games like Destiny, which when it comes to weapons you can't craft, you gotta grind for those god rolls), but NGS demands so much of your time to avoid falling behind when new stuff comes out.
    I was hopeful they'd continue the trend that they did with Dark Falz Aegis. THAT was perfection in my eyes, it gave players an incentive to play the new UQ and people weren't causing the millionth Great Depression in the game

    I was Yellowboze. Bane of my existence was the Yasha at roughly 1/21,800 from an Indi Belra in the VR Temple, which appear maybe once or twice per stage. XD The rarest thing I remember finding was probably getting a real, honest Zanba from a Sinow Zoa at around 1/1024 chance. Of course, a few rare weapons loved to just keep popping up, so I couldn't help but laugh when the first 7 star rare I got in PSO2 when I started it was a Cross Scar. The curse lived on. :D
    More than anything I just wish we had more options to chase after at any given time. Criticasterq mentioned in his video about this topic how level 6 potentials brought quite a few older weapons up to surprisingly high %, but I've never heard anyone running damage calculations say any of them were actually good enough to compete with the current heavy-hitters. Some probably are good enough for some higher combat, but I have a feeling people wouldn't react too well if you walked into Leciel or Solus with a fully upgraded Greaga. Even just using a subclass weapon part of the time seems to be a problem. I wish options could expand to be more horizontal and inclusive of creativity.
    I still think collection files might provide a way to get rewards out for the vastly different casual and intensely hardcore sides of the player base without having supplies balloon out of control.

    I've wanted regular Health Regan for a while, and while the Health Regen on Revita is lackluster, it's made it the last good Weapon release for me. I currently use a Knuckles/Gunblade multiweapon that kinda lets me fly around the battlefield until I perform Thousand Blows or a Charge Shot and get smacked to the ground. The main issue though is that with Thousand Blows, I could've activated the Photon Art before the enemy does their wind up, and can launch the Chargeshot to try and dodge, but I'm stuck in the animation, leading to me getting hit hard.

    Tisah rarity is a mistake, and so is having that level of power be locked behind RNG. It destroys any credibility of any competition in game if only the "chosen" few will truly have a chance at seeing the top hundred.

    Hey bud, no doubt NGS needs seious help. Augments from base pso2 w3ould be nice. And not the same copy and paste event over and over again. Would love to talk to you more on this subject

    Didn't get a Relic weapon to drop till Stia. Didn't get a Roks weapon to drop till after Kvaris, which is needed for a Kizaar. Rugged, I think I have one now? Gunblaze? Yeah no. ~Tisha. KEK.~
    Am I cursed? No, I would hope not. But I'm not going to just bang me head against the wall waiting to get something.
    Probably just continue to build my Primm Rifle. Had it since NGS launched. Still useful.

      I got a relic like 2 weeks after Retem dropped. Never saw rugged or gunblaze when they were new. Still rocking a neos on the classes I use and still doing A-OK!

    I settle with just Verschmelz and 3 regular Octos Armors, no need to pay ridiculous amounts of Meseta for BiS. I beat Solus 3 times on JP with just that setup and 148% potency, so I'm happy.

    Sadly I never got into rare dorp chase thought what we to have the Is equivalent cursed items In D&D but fun one were wepoan stuiped powerful but drawback has silly quirk too instead out right cursing you.
    Like maybe you could have sword were go swinging missing maybe you hut yourself or your allies.
    Maybe a gun that does healing instead of damage.
    Or brass knuckles that huge boxing gloves that have range if a spear when you use them.

    I'm not worried about the units drop rates because the alternative is just as good, hp and pp are things you can circumvent. The problem with 9* weapons are not the Tisah drop rates but the fact that the alternative isn't really good (specially if you play Slayer), and using the new feature to increase the fixa will require more luck than dropping a tisah.

    Nothing wrong with having rare drops like Tisah. Anyone remember farming Nemesis, Raven/Slave, Jupiter Tullus, anyone? I sure as shit remember having almost 1000% RDR and not seeing either at all, personally I fail to see the difference if even the weapons I brought up were in the realm of unobtainum. Having rare drops like that is fine, but there has to be an alternative for others to work towards and obtain(I.E, Neos Astraen, Verschmelz, Kouklophis). I'm gonna be real with you, the moment I hear a weapon or armor drops and it's like chasing a unicorn like the Tisah's? I won't even acknowledge it's existence simply because I know I sure as shit won't get one to drop. I never got a Rugged to drop back in Kvaris, I only started seeing them when they were basically phased out and as common as they are nowadays.
    It's like that meme where you're asked to tell the difference between the two pictures. They're the same picture.

      Yeah I heard stories about rugged weapons when they were fairly new, but like you, I didn't see one until they were being phased out. Yes, I remember Nemesis/Slave from JP ep3 but never got one myself. I had an austere/ophistia katana in late 2015 that I held onto until the day I was kicked off JP.

    The prices are a mayor problem for this games since the begining, they are terrifing for any new player who try to get something for his fashion or gear. No other game abuse this hard from your patience and your wallet. This is horrendous

    I am of the opinion of criticaster and cathy on this subject :) Tissah and Octo Armor variants are not really needed as much with current gear progression, so it's not really worth making a fuss over like other people have. However, it's true SEGA should look into reward system for LTQs and High Difficulty Quests and offer better loot to farm for.
    And well, maybe revise drop rate of some things (I personally think 11th Anniv. SP Scratch Tickets were obnoxiously rare, considering some people actually wanted a lot of items from that scratch... 10th anniv. tickets drop rate felt way better back in the day).
    So guess it would be a matter of balance I guess? Or offer higher difficulty alternatives with better overall loot perhaps?

    The thing with drops and such is the Power Level system. In order to access Dark Falz Solus you have to take the latest weapon, but they choose a rather lame potential for it. Sure I can grind and get it but, it's boring. It's a boring weapon. And the only other option is a horrible drop table. Like really, we need options

    Elitists in this game is real. They will dip out on you if they see you wearing "undesirable" gear or using "unoptimized" builds. It all funnels down to time attack rewards and why we have this skewed one-type build.
    Oh there's nothing wrong with having it but if that's all the game has to offer as difficulty-reward system, it's easy enough to say where the gears are headed no matter what other options are presented.

    Play every day since day one. Never had a Rugged drop. Never had a Gunblaze drop. Never had a Tisah drop. Adding these weapons to the game is pointless with these drop rates.

    Really wish drops were tied to level, and the higher level zones/enemies you faced, the more chance of getting weapons, augs, and units on par with that level. We should not have an auto-sell feature to eliminate trash (outside of gold/silver primm fodder for lvling gear). WE SHOULD BE PROGRESSING, NOT STAGNATING. FARMING SHOULD ELEVATE, NOT KEEP US GROUND LEVEL. And if you do get "rare" drops, like actual rare drops, they should not be sellable on the market... at all. Make them truly and genuinely RARE.

    Its amazing how rare these drops are for weapons lower than 10* .......jesus damn christ wtf are we in for when 10*+ happen fucking 15* is gonna be vomiting nightmare.

The worse part in all of this is that for ever low the drop rate is the fact that items being sold for insane prices non fixa just somehow scary to think this game market place could be its undoing if sega keeps going at this rate...15* being damn near billions vs millions or even trillions.

    I think it's totally OK to have at least ONE or TWO items in the game that are rare and desirable. The entire core of PSO has always been "Wow, what a cool item you got there son!" not "EVERYONE MUST HAVE THE BEST ITEM AT ALL TIMES" ( though hackers in PSO made it that way eventually )
    What you're missing with the PSO1 comparisons is that - you're killing like...maybe 10, 20 of the monster that drops a rare item per run of the zone in PSO1. In PSO2, you're killing the thing that drops your item like 3 times per second. The relative drop rates are probably not that far off.
    There are lots of problems with NGS, but having two items be a little bit rare is not one of them

    Possible hot take here, but I believe SEGA is driving away from unique weapon potentials essentially because they either become mandatory and force you to use them on every loadout or are just plain useless due to balance issues or uninteresting or insuficient gameplay changes/QoL. That said, I disagree with a lot of people's view regarding the game's progression, and think Cathy set the cards on the table just right with a recent video... We DO have horizontal progression, that's what limit breaking is for! For crying out loud, I've had some people swear that they are playing better whilst using a fully upgraded Crystia and Octo Armors with the LC augments.
    Going back to the Arga argument and recent drama... Regular octos are fine and, not to be that copium-filled or jaded PS fan, but if Argas WERE a potency upgrade people would just flat out drop the game. Is it THAT bad it's tied behind bad rates at first? It's clearly gonna go up in the near future, you don't need to have that much foresight and again, its not even that much of an upgrade?
    On a final note, I miss my Rykros Staff... and these gameplay changes these rare 14* and 15* weapons brought are definitely something a lot of people enjoyed. What about reiterating the idea from the very beginning? Why does it have to be tied to a rare drop to begin with? How about unlocking a new system that allows you to use a weapon type in a way that was never seen before and gate it behind content, or titles or hell, GROWTHMENT-type collectibles? I wouldn't mind going on a journey throughout the 4 regions and leciel collecting or fighting special encounters to get a simple but nice QoL upgrade, it definitely ticks off the "power fantasy" part of the game for me...

      Yeah i can see how balancing around that would be a huge nightmare. It's way easier to balance fights around a more homogeneous class/skill/augment system.

    I really don't get why everyone is so surprised by the abysmal drop rates on NGS. Since launch SEGA has been purposefully doing this and they won't stop any soon.
    They can't keep enough players around through meaningful content, unless it's based on fashion or creative spaces, these drop rates are nothing but a method to make sure people will stay around and try to either drop rare stuff or make enough meseta to buy it. And no, as frustrating as that may be, it's not enough to make players truly give up and stop playing, nothing seems to be, the most they ever do is make a video to express their frustrations.

    extremely low rdr demotivates and de-incentivizes players from even bothering to progress. i quit a year ago because my time was not respected

    Nothing in this game is worth farming, 10* series are just next door
    The "fashion end game" meme is real because this model is moronic, who wants disposable gear with that drop rarity? people who buys them have mental issues or too much money to waste if you are a normal person if you get a Tisah the only logical thing to do is to sell it to one of those "questionably sane" whales.
    This game could be at least 50% better if SEGA would give us paralel weapon options like more 9* elemental weapons to make elemental damage gameplay relevant while the content is still fresh and not after a better series is already released and they aren't relevant anymore because they are an inferior series and anything new would do better.
    If weapons like Justitean, Efflugent and Tenebrous came all at the same time and had the same DPS potential it would have been wonderful because maybe you didn't have the "END ALL BE ALL" weapon but at least you could have all these options to do as much dmg depending on the enemy weakness and give us a reason to feel rewarded when we got any of those weapons instead of going"FK I DIDN'T GOT THE BIS *autosell*" (also another reason to not just afk in town)
    SEGA doesn't care about our opinions have you see the Q&A? nobody asks those questions in the west, and if we are counting with JP to do something, we can wait until we die because they are all gatcha adicted they are happy just by getting an skimpy panty or swimsuit for their waifu (and this is really worrying since it is coming from me)

    Gearing in this game is pointless, when in a few months there will be a better option, probably for free, so just get all the gear you need from the seasonal event, and wait for the next content drip.
    Value more your time and dont grind shit.
