HOW TO TRANSFER RECORDINGS FROM OLD DISH HOPPER DVR TO NEW DISH HOPPER DVR, without a 5 minute intro

- This is the long and hard way. It is best to buy a backup drive, but if that costs too much or does not work, here is how you save your recordings.
you’re the best!!!! thank you sir so much!!!!
Thanks Mia, please like the video.
@@iowaunemployment thank you so much! This helps a great deal. When I called dish they did tell me how to get to the place in tools but not which box to enter tools from. BTW you can click the home key 3 times if your remote is working. Do both hoppers need to be plugged into a power source to do the transfer or just the new one?
@@platinumtreasure You definitely need power to both dvr,s.
Thank you, to be clear, when you are going through the settings, diagnostics and tools are you on the OLD hopper, or the new hopper? Sorry I wanted to be sure.
New hopper.
Hello, thanks for the simple, easy to understand video. I just re-joined Dish Network by having my account reactivated. It’d been paused for about a year. I was able to watch everything on my DVR with no problems until a week ago.
I watched your video and then noticed that the technician had already left the Hoppers hooked up together as you suggested. However, after a couple of hours, I decided to unhook the Ethernet cable from the new one, go through the process, and hook it up again. I never got a “select all” option though. It just ended with the bar of lights on the screen going from left to right. After about 12 hours now, the old DVR, still tells me “event has expired” if I try to select anything.
The new one is showing 76% full, same as the old one, but there’s no programs being added to any folders. Should I just give it up, or try again, or keep it going as it is? Also, the green light on the front of the old one is not on. Does that matter?
Thanks to anyone who can help me out, I did have 5 complete series on the old DVR to watch, but now they’re gone.
Again, thanks to anyone who can help.
I don't have an answer. Just keep trying until you have no other ideas. Maybe backup to an external drive then attach to the new drive.
Thanks for your reply. I did ask the tech about an external drive, but he didn’t have one to leave with me. The shows I had on my old DVR are also on Prime Video or Netflix. And, I will try to buy them on DVD if possible. It’s not the end of the world because I either have to re-record or find elsewhere.
The tech told me the older Hopper was messed up. Before, I couldn’t watch the DVR for over 50 minutes straight without it stopping and trying a complete restart. It was over 5 years old anyway. Things are bound to start failing sooner or later.
As a dish tech just to let you know we only get paid $15 for a service call so staying at your house for 3 days would not be possible.
That is horrible the way you are treated by Dish. They cargo for insurance and expect you to take the hit. It does not take 3 days to do this, more like 15 minutes to set it up.
I absolutely don't think he meant for the technician to be there 3 days while it's transferring but dish should offer sending a technician when customers have insurance to do the hardware switch and set it up to transfer the recordings so consumers aren't having figure out if they are doing it correctly. Sending a technician should be the first option when paying for insurance monthly.
Had 1 dude on Saturday came early before noon left at 3
Guy #2 Sunday got here at 8 left at 1
Both lost everything I had recorded. Brainiacs said they did it correctly.
4 days later still says 0 transfer out of 423. Now wonderful dish is sending #3 employee on Thursday to tell me number 1 & 2 F'd up and lost everything.
Good bye dish acct. blocked no funds available. End of 6 yrs of crappy service.
@@platinumtreasureDish Network doesn't care. Worst thing I ever did was get their service😔😉
Thank you for making this video. My 10 year old hopper developed an issue where it couldn't see/access an external hard drive and later, couldn't see it was getting a sat-signal. Tech said it would have to be replaced and I asked him about the recordings on the old one. I got the usual, "transfer to an external drive" line, but, as I said, it didn't recognize them.
My transfer took the two cable setup and took 4.5 days to complete (86% load on the old hopper). Never had to restart it, it did it in one session. I'll have to recreate the folders I had things separated into, but that's a minor thing - main thing is I have all my old recordings on the new hopper! Why the techs don't either know about this or don't share that info is beyond me - especially since the option is in the hopper's software package!
To answer one question I saw below in the comments - yes, you can record new things (scheduled or spontaneously) while the transfer is in session.
Thanks again!
I have “Dish Protect” ( aka the insurance) too, and I had a tech come out twice he never offered to switch out my Hopper 3 even when I had a replacement recommendation from tech support. On my third call to Dish I am finally being mailed a replacement Hopper 3…. I’ve been with Dish for a month and this hardware issue is leaving a bad taste in my mouth
I have been waiting for 12 hours and it still says 0 of 1,077 events transferred. Should I start over? Thanks for the video by the way.
That is very frustrating. I think that you should start over and see where it starts off the second try. I had to restart mine several times. Each time I did it, more recordings were added.
Doesn't answer the question, "IS there a simple way to archive directly on to a computer, without going through , a half dozen Mickey Mouse steps. " I am fed up with THE DISH NETWorks pricing, and have found a 20.00 dollar, solution instead. AND no one , has the time to burn two or three days, just to copy files. ONCE the videos are off the HOPPER is going away, and I will be done with this. These companies, over -complicate everything.
I couldn't agree more. But you must have a hopper DVR to play them back as there is some type of encryption. Sorry this did not help, it is the only way I found to keep them.
I had reset network to make new hopper to see old hopper. Then it did not give me option to select programs. It is saying undefined contents are being copied. Is it working? I have no clue.
Wow, never heard that before. I am guessing but it probably is working. Please come back and tell me if it copied.
Nothing copied. Connected a HDD and it took 2 Hrs to just format but nothing transferred after several hours.
Disconnect HDD and restarted copy process from tools, this time gave me option to select. After 3 Hrs it says 0 of 112 events transferred. However, now it is giving time estimate of 1 days. Bar hasn’t moved yet. 24 years subscriber with dish and I have to go through this BS.
I wouldn't worry about bar not moving. Give it a day and see what it does. @@skeets9837
But is there any way to transfer from the old VIP receivers to Hopper and keep the shows???
Not sure. Just need to experiment.
Hello! Your video was very useful, however when I got to the "select events to record" part, it said "no events to display". I am using the ethernet cables. I'm on day 2 and it sayd it is transferring recordings but it looks like there's been no progress. It saythe transfer time is "undefinded days" and and "undefined of undefined events transferred". WTH? Should I give up this method and get a terabyte?
Others have the same issue. After trying it a couple times, you need to do something different as it does not work for everyone.
Just a foot note. After resetting both of my Hoppers (unplugged for 1 min) and putting both of the ethernet cables in the bottom ports, I finally got it to work. And, it took about 24 hours to transfer my recordings that were about 50% full. Thanks again for your video!
Do you have to have the new one hooked up to the tv to pull recording from the old one? Or does it not matter? Have a ethernet cable hooked to them
Yes, you must hook to the TV or you cannot see the interface and be able to toggle between modes to transfer.
My Dish Hopper3 DVR required two Ethernet cables for this to work. When following the YT video instructions using one cable, the new DVR could not find the old DVR. I plugged Ethernet cable1 into the upper Ethernet port of DVR1 and connected cable1 to the lower Ethernet port of the DVR2. In addition, I connected Ethernet cable2 to the lower Ethernet port of the DVR1 and connected the other end of cable2 to the upper Ethernet port of the DVR2. I can now see all my recordings on the old DVR. I selected ALL to transfer all my saved recordings. Success! Transfer now in progress.
Awesome advice.
This really helped. Thanks
I just swapped out our Hopper, which is is 6 or 7 years old & I was getting the "unable to find other Hopper" message. This unconventional method seems to be working because some of our content is already showing up on the new Hopper.
So thanks for your comment!
👊🏻
I changed the inactivity settings to "never turn off" & at 7:10 p.m., I set the update feature to 7 p.m. on both. But the old one just rebooted.
🤬
Although the new Hopper is remaining at "1% Full", it seems to be adding content - because the episode totals are increasing - but who knows?
Guess we'll know in a couple of days.

You may need to restart it several time. That works and is cumulative. It does not start over. @@DoyleFM
@@iowaunemployment
Thanks. I figured that, based on your replies to others. I'm glad it didn't start over; in fact, I noticed the ethernet lights continued blinking during the reboot. The old Hopper showed 31% full at the beginning of the transfer so I hope ours doesn't take 10,000 years to complete.
🤞🏻
When you say I might need to start it again, I hope you don't mean going through the process of selecting the content to transfer all over again because we skipped over a lot of content.
🤞🏻
What do you mean by starting again, specifically?
🤔

I plan to order the Hopper 3 in October
It keeps saying unable to find a Hopper connect to one of this Hopper's ports. I connect correctly
Can you shut both off, then turn on the one with the recordings then turn on the new hopper that is to receive the recording. Then start the process. That is all I can think of.
@@iowaunemployment thanks for the reply. I gave up my recordings as I already spent too much time. Maybe I'll try next time.
Got old dish with ethernet but other older one has phone only. guess I'm screwed. And don't have HDD connections for cloning.
I tried all of this and got to the last screen that you showed where researching like the green dot lines going over and over and over but it never ever went to the next screen so I could choose which shows I wanted to transfer.
That is a bummer. Did you try different cables to connect? Do you have an external drive you can dedicate?
I had to reset my new receiver while they were connected and eventually it worked, but it took many attempts.
@@imw8n4u It is a crappy system, but if you tinker it works.
Thank you I looked for an hour on the dish network website and got nothing. I should have just come to UA-cam. You're very clear and very unstandable
Can you record and watch recordings while it transfers
You can certainly watch, but not sure about recording.
How long does it take?
Using a Cat 5 cable it took me about two days. One time it stopped and I had to start over. Just need to start it at night and see where it is at in the morning. I had my DVD about half full.
Great tutorial! With so many “cutting the cord,” do you have any tips for retrieving recordings from external DVR without an active receiver ?
The recordings are encrypted so probably not possible.
So quick question here. I have a hopper 3 which keeps resetting. It keeps going through the setup process. Even the status progress bar finishes no issues.
Then it just resets again. A couole times i even got a picture but it then just resets again. I think the hard drive is ok just something wrong with the hopper.
When i get the new hopper will this method work using the new hopper to acess the system info screen and doing it that way?
That is hard to say. The old one is worn out. I think it always works better when the old one has been unplugged for a while and cools off.
@@iowaunemployment Thanks for the heads up!! :)
What shows you the progress and completion
It shows on mine but you may need to start the process over if it stalls. It will start where you left off.
Can you transfer from a hopper 2 to a spectrum dvr?
I don't know. Spectrum DVRs are sticky. You would just need to try. Remember, to play a Hopper recording you need a Hopper as it is a type of encryption.
@@iowaunemployment I have no idea what that means by encryption. I have an external hard drive, usb cable and Ethernet cable. I am moving in a few days and the new community makes you get spectrum so now I have a spectrum dvr and in a few days I will no longer have my dish hopper 2 which has hundreds of hours of shows I wanted to keep. Help!
@@jenloveswrestlingwxw640 What I would do is get an external hard drive and transfer all to that drive. Keep an eye out for a used dish receiver on craigslist or facebook marketplace and then use that to play all your old recordings. That is the best I suggestion I have. You have hundreds of dollars of recordings and it is cost effective to hang onto them unless you have streaming on Netflix and all the others that can duplicate the list.
@@iowaunemployment i thought you could only transfer from external drive to and from the original hopper? I have an external drive and its half full and I was hoping to transfer my recordings from there to the new spectrum dvr
@@jenloveswrestlingwxw640 You can go from an external drive to any hopper. I am unaware if it must be the original hopper assigned to you. That is a new twist. I believe you can go to any other hopper to play. Maybe try it on a friends hopper first to test before you buy a used hopper.
Can you use any Ethernet cable? I know nothing about them so not sure if there are different types. Thanks for your video. I've paid $9.99 for tech services and coverage 8 years and Dish basically told me I'm on my own on getting my full DVR onto a new one. I've held off on getting a new DVR for years because of this. I'd love to have the Hopper 3 so I could record 16 shoes at once and not do the daily decision of which 3 shows I can record at once. I feel like they should offer a better solution to transfer recordings to their customers.
Yes, most ethernet cables are the same. You should have one with a modem or router that you have purchased at one time or another. I found mine with my old centurylink modem. They are outdated technology. I would borrow rather than buy. I cancelled my insurance with Dish because of this. I need to do a video on how to do that.
@@iowaunemployment thank you!
Dish sucks. 💩They were here 2 days and still managed to f up my saved movies. Never transferred looks like everything lost.
Dish will be shut off and blocked from collecting anything.
Now they want to send #3 employee on Thursday. Yea just more b.s. as they shut off old hopper already so bye bye saved movies.😠🤡
I am so sorry to hear that. They were no help to me. It should be easier to do. Poor design.
I'm doing this right now as I speak however because dish was hacked it's been a mess anyway I was without dish, & had so many problems with it, it was miserable I was offered a Dish Hopper 3 at a very good deal for compensation I guess but so worried I would lose all my taped programs then I did not want to lose even though Hopper 3 was a great & better Hopper more hours to tape and Tuners Etc., anyway I went ahead and had the technician come out who is very nice and not very comfortable at first because the last two texts were HORRIBLE that being 10 years and 5 years ago, but this technician was a sweetie, anyway it sounds like and watching THIS IS WHAT HE DID, now going on 8 PLUS HOURS and STILL LONG WAY to GO, so thank you for sharing that it may not just be 24 or 48 Hours it may be 72 hours 😉 I was WORRIED about AND forgot to ASK the tech if it WAS OKAY to TURN the TELEVISION OFF, as it was transferring these taped videos, but YOU ANSWERED my QUESTION and I THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH, because I so badly want to go to sleep and was a little bit afraid to LEAVE the TV ON, so AGAIN THANK YOU and God bless you and definitely subscribed and liked and will be back if NEEDED! xx 4/20/23
Unfortunately, the transfer sometimes stops for no reason and you need to start it again to finish the transfer. You will not need to start over, just finish what was not transferred.
I was told after transfer was finished, from old Hopper to new Hopper 3, a message or pop up telling me "transfer was completed" it has been 11 DAYS NOW and I have YET to see ANYTHING SHOW on my SCREEN telling me "all my shows have been successfully transferred!" And it is still hooked up.... I'm afraid to touch it, unhook it, and don't know what to do? Any ideas? Thank you I so appreciate your help... I'm having some other issues with Dish too, trying to access certain apps like Netflix and Prime, SOMETIMES it WILL WORK and let me open the app and sometimes it WON'T and I'm getting ticked off because I'm PAYING for THESE! And I'm unable to access them! They, Netflix and Prime, are taking it out of my checking account Dish is NOT billing me directly for these apps! This is just frustrating LOL.. anyway I'll check back here and see if you have any advice. Thank you. 👍😊
