The Day After: Edmonton Oilers 2, Vancouver Canucks 3 Discussion | VAN LEADS 3-2

  • In today's Day After Episode, I discuss the #oilers 3-2 loss to the #canucks in game 5 of their second-round matchup. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were held at bay, and Edmonton's Powerplay was neutralized. The Oilers did have a strong start but from the 2nd period onward the Canucks controlled play and scoring chances. Despite a strong showing from Calvin Pickard, Edmonton finds themselves on the brink of elimination heading back to Rogers Place for Saturday's game 6 matchup. The Oilers are hoping this does not turn into a repeat of last year against Vegas where they watched a lead slip away in game 5 and then lost game 6 at home. Edmonton is going to have to play much better if they want to force a game 7. #nhl

Canucks fan here. Great channel Austin!
Oilers are my 2nd favourite team in the league. Mostly because they have (what i believe to be) the best hockey player of all time. He deserves a cup. One of my biggest disappointments of the Canucks' 2011 run is that the Sedins did not get a cup. It's the hardest trophy to win.
It's been a great series so far and it's not over yet. It's first to 4 wins. I think this will be a nail biter for both fan bases.
    Go Canucks Go!

Reason Canucks will likely take this series:
    1) superior coaching with a clear system
    2) Canucks know what they are as a team, Oilers seem to know what they aren’t (no 3rd or 4th line)
    3) Canucks never say die attitude
    4) oilers over playing stars
    5) Canucks number one goalie returning who is a game stealer

Canucks fan here, love your takes. It's funny, reminds me of how I like to dig into the Canucks lineup and get into a state that I like to call "passionately objective". I think this series is so tight, and the fan bases are so passionate about the teams, and we see a ton out there and have strong opinions. But it is based on what we're seeing in the games and from the team.
It's funny cause after last game, myself with some friends and family were talking about how Edmonton looks way hungrier and wants it more. How we don't look like we give a sh**. Crazy the swings from one game to the next. In general I think Oilers fans are awesome and super intense (I've spent enough time in Edmonton and Alberta to witness first hand). I would have been pulling for Edmonton if the Canucks weren't in the mix.
Will be checking out your videos more and subscribing to the channel.

outstanding review. Very interesting. You are correct to sum it up on Holland, but EDM fans & media will tend to not be smart enough to realize what has happened. Cupboards bare, almost no players in development, a big sell out. ... but ultimately the real problem is Bob Nicholson. Always protects himself by hiring of over the hill resumes... that are 10+ yrs out of date, not current and not take risks.. Holland is a nice guy but tends to hire easy & headlines. Some guys have really carried the mail on the team.... but you are right to highlight the 'passengers'.

Hahaha McDavid blaming bad luck bounces, Leon blaming the goal posts for not scoring, HAHHAAH I’m sorry but that’s hilarious and very pathetic!! As for Leon, shoot the puck better, the posts don’t move so obviously the goalie is taking away the rest of the net and as for bad luck bounces, yea it seems like some nights ppl get zero puck luck but you gotta find a way to get past it instead of whining about it after the game, honestly makes them look like a bunch of spoiled little brats that haven’t been getting their way!!!

    • @jordacheamistad3748
      @jordacheamistad3748 14 днів тому

At first glance, yes it looks like McDavid missed his assignment. However, Pettersson and Lindholm were on the ice. I'm an Oilers fan, so I'm not current on the Canucks lineup. It looked like McDavid was covering slot and Miller came in on a stealth change. The broken play at the blue line (where the Canucks were able to block the full breakout and bring the puck back in and gain the zone as Eckholm changed out) lead to the oddman situation that basically lead to the Miller goal. The way Pettersson guided the puck to the left net front makes me think that there was a set play there. Obviously, banking it off the post and to Miller was not planned, but I think he was generally trying to put the puck to the weak side, where it ended up anyways. If there is one takeaway from this series, I think a lot of the Canucks' supposed luck is actually generated from set type of plays that are executed in a fluid manner-in a sort of very situational and not not forced way, that results in the opposition not expecting at all kind of way. It's like they, as a team, react instinctively to what the opposition gives them and they've got sneaky good plays for it. If the Oilers are striking type of MMA fighter that rely on volume strikes, the Canucks are a submission/Jiu jitsu type of fighter. I think of the 4 on 4 goal in game 1 where the Canucks spread our guys out in our zone and started moving the puck more east west. I look at the Canucks coaching staff and others (Sedins, Foote, Tocchet, etc.). These are high pedigree ex players coaching here that have a ton of plays. The Oilers could take a lesson here in terms of offensive play. I know we got 2 of the best forwards blah blah blah, but the rest of the lineup could use more of the juice the Canucks are drinking when it comes to more detailed attacking and counterattacking.

That was a perfect example of the ailment that this team has displayed over the years. Just one example: the bubble play-in series against Chicago. The Oilers lost because they didn’t play. They just didn’t hustle and go. There’s no reason for it. Something just comes over them. They’re pro athletes being payed to play and they don’t play. They had that game in the first. Vancouver outplayed them for the rest, but still didn’t go ahead in the score! Perfect opportunity to steal a game if you only play for 10-20 minutes in the second or third period. But no.

Well that was a tough loss. Nurse 2 assists all playoffs lets the guy have time and space to make a play. You cant let players have time and space thats all thier looking for. Van played well but our big guns fired blanks. 5 pps couldn't get a goal probly cost us the game. Cant let the game be settled by a bounce at the end especially when you know the other team gonna push. Gotta put it away early. Now we gotta win two in a row which hasn't been done in this series. I think our biggest need this off season besides goaltending better be a puck moving defensemen. Got smothered most of 2nd and 3rd no clean breakouts. To much throwing the puck away. Cant put it all on mcdavid but his guy scored the winner. Worst game I've seen mcdavid play in his career, missed the net on most of his shots. Im sure we'll win game 6 at home but gotta find a way to win in van. I agree our biggest advantage in this series should be experience but it has'nt showed. nuge, nurse and hyman should show some leadership by doing the little things right.😊SCRATCH nurse, I'd rather lose without him then win with him. derek ryan did alot during the game i felt.

This game was ours but we p!$$%d it away! Early lead. Brown great missed opportunity, "3" shots on "5 PPs", massive brain fart by Bouchard, and bad change and confusion at the bench on winning goal cost us this game. I dont buy into the "OILERS ARE TIRED" mentality. Canucks should be tired too!? If only we capitalized on all our opportunities in the 1st period? we easily win the game! We just needed to bare down and score on those opportunities, and then hang on the rest of the game, exhausted or not! Going into next game, and beyond, how well the coach manages the lines is gonna be key! ..... Imo, last night the 3rd & 4th line were playing really good (exception Cory Perry) and especially the 4th line, these lines should've been given more ice so our stars didn't have to play so much. The Coach needs to solve this issue for the next game. The plan should be to try and score early a couple goals or so and make the 3rd /4th lines play more, especially in the 2nd period where Vancouver seems to start owning the game and have their way! In the 3rd period, the stars can be used more heavily to control the play and put the Canucks away! Anyway, this should be the strategy imo.. Lastly, Perry should be benched!. Its bad enough we are getting hemmed in and hes TOO SLOW to help out! Its like its a PP when he's out there! Put Carrick or Gags in!

The most frustrating experience of being an Oilers fan is seeing specific areas that they can improve their team/game on and watching them time after time making the same mistakes.
I believe that all truly great teams have to experience some adversity in order to push to win the cup, but the Oilers just keep falling prey to the same self destructive tendencies.
We need a WHOLE team effort. If the stars are preforming the bottom 6 take the night off. Also, vice-versa. We need a complete effort FOR 60 MINUTES of the game and not just the first 10-15 minutes. We have had this issue since the decade of darkness and I dont know how they anticipate to change this. Possibly this is the worst TDL/Mid-Season acquisitions I have seen a team put up so far. At this rate, the Oilers may as well replace most of the middle six during the off season. Perry, Henrique, Stecher, Carrick, McLeod, Foegele, Brown, Broberg, and Ceci should all move. Nuge is also on my shit-list but I dont see Edmonton moving on from him.

In my series preview I said that Vancouver could easily take this series from Edmonton, and that it may come down to goaltending. Most fans and analysts look at the McDavid and Draisaitl factor and think that because two of the best players in the world are on the same team that they should be the consensus to win, but this game requires A LOT more than two players going nuclear. Now we're seeing the effects of riding them too much. Canucks have a massive advantage right now.
