  • This video will show you how to reset, test and troubleshoot circuit breaker in your breaker panel. I have used screw driver to open penal cover and digital multimeter to test for voltage.
This video is only for educational purposes. If not experienced working on live circuits get ahold of local electrician.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge! So far you are the only one who mentioned that other than bad, outlet or switch their could be a broken wire! Which I think is in my case either a broken wire, short in the wirings due to rain water or old wirings got corroded. Last but not least there may well be chewed on wire due to critters bitting!

2:42 You do not "Got" to put the red on the black or any such thing. The voltage in this system "Alternates" so the push an pull is constantly being reversed. Now in DC if you reverse the polarity, Usually the multmeter tells you "-" a minus sign when you have leads reversed.

How do you determine if the breaker isn't tripping when there is a short circuit or arcing? I had a situation where an old 12awg wire got damaged against a sharp edge in a too small metal box when installing a gfci and the wire melted when I turned the breaker on but it didn't trip the breaker before I manually shut it off. Now that was an arcing situation and not a direct short and this was a standard non gfci/afci breaker. Does that mean the breaker is not necessarily bad? I will probably replace it with a new one but I will still be wondering if it was bad or not.

I would test it to make sure you still have voltage going through when it's on and no voltage when it's off. Breakers are designed to be reset and be reused after short, unless they go bad.

    • @desirdesigns
      @desirdesigns 2 роки тому

You could, but you wouldn't get to know the voltage value. And if you wanted to check one breaker switch, the ones next to it might interfere. So you'd want to turn each of them off to single out the breaker in question.

I have a bedroom circuit breaker which trips when my microwave runs (completely seperate kitchen circuit breaker and room). My bedroom is one one circuit breaker, and the microwave is on another completely unrelated breaker for my kitchen. They all seem to be a kind of GFI Siemens panel breakers. The bedroom breaker works perfectly unless the microwave is turned on, which causes it to shut off. When shut off, the microwave works fine and you cannot tell anything has changed. Any idea what is going on in this Voo-Doo Doo-Doo?

The bedroom total on the breaker is 10A with a computer turned on maximum. The microwave is the only thing on its 20A circuit and pulls about 8A-10A. There is no large load on any circuit. The issue is not overamperage, as it seems to be a false sensing of an arc for some reason..

    • @sangn1696

I'm not a certified electrician but I guess you are having something, a load maybe, in series with the outlet circuit which takes away 70V of the total 120V. Shorted circuit is not the case because that circuit will trip instantly as soon as you turn it on, or you have no voltage measured at outlets.

It came down only on top. I am very afraid of electricity but I have to do this to get my water back on. It may turn back on the way it is but not sure that's very safe. It is 220. Anyone have simple fix for this? Actually I believe it is 240

    • @mikemeaney3017

2 pole breaker provides you with 240v utilizing both phases single pole provides you with 120v utilizing only one phase

Basically, 2 single poles combine to become a 2 poles. However, they are controlled dependently, either both ON or both OFF. There are also 3 poles circuit breaker. They are fairly in common used. Like in the video you see one at the very top.

    Hello all
I have an issue just happened after storm 2 day ago
Electric went out in all area around 1:00 AM but after Electric came back at 10:00 AM less than half the house stuff working and the rest is not working.
I tested the breaker is not working to ground and I found it zero and the working circuit breaker are 123v.
So I tested the 2 hot lines in the main circuit breaker, both of them 120v but when tested the voltage between the two hot lines, I found it zero and even at the meter.
I called the Electric company. When tech came he is nothing wrong and the voltage is good between the 2 hot lines , even he showed me the reading in his voltmeter 245v.
He left and I went to my Electric panel to check the voltage I found 240v between the 2 hot lines.
Then I started turning on all circuit breaker and turning on all lights , as soon as I turned the upstairs bathroom fan Electric went out in tge sane half of house.
Tested the voltage between the two hot lines is zero again even after removing the electric meter.
    The question
Why the incoming power is zero between the two hot lines

Greetings! I realize you left your comment a year ago but I am having a very similar issue. Power went out, when power was restored, many things now don't work. Electric company said that the lines going into the house read 120 and are fine. Says it could be anything from the breaker box to the point of contact (receptacle, switch etc).
I am in the country and the mice have done crazy damage recently. Seems they prefer non food items to nibble on now a days....
Just curious how you resolved your issue and or what you found out along the way. I'm just looking to isolate the issue to save the electrician time in finding the problem.

      Good morning Kerri
It was fixed by replacing the whole defective line from the pole at the top of my house to the electric meter
      When the first technician came.
He juggle the line a little bit then it made a connection at the pole at the top of my house
When electric went down again, I called PECO to report the issue for the second time
Another technician came and got his ladder and tested the electric voltage at the main pole first then it was fine then he tested the voltage at the pole at the top of my house and was fine too. Then we he tested at the meter found it faulty.
Then he replaced the defective line from the pole at the top of my house to the meter
      After that everything is good.
Also this technician said that the other technician was lazy to check all voltages at the main pole and the pole at the top of my house

Anyone skilled in breaker panels/ electrical troubleshooting that can help me? My RV/ camper keeps popping the breaker, all electrical lines work fine, nothing is excessively hooked up (nothing should be using any power), happened when the power went out last week with the storm and was working fine before that, just not ever since. Only one breaker in the RV trips, as well as trips the gcfi outlet that is in the barn. The power to the RV works fine like I said but trips as soon as I plug into RV. I have troubleshoot to the point where I believe I need a new breaker box, but I don't want to spend money on it if it ain't going to fix the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated!
