Excellent bro, I was just in the middle of finishing your video and you practically answered my question at the same time that you responded. Lol Be blessed. I wanna see you more bro.
Saw Paoli Mejias back around '10 in the back room of a restaurant in Seattle. About 30 people in the audience, all of us musicians. Astounding! Caught Cándido that same year - still had his chops. A vast list of great players today, young and old.
My best of all time list: 1. Giovani Hidalgo 2. Tata Guines 3. Jose Luis Quintana (Changuito) 4. Ray Barretto 5. Mongo Santamaría Notables: Cándido Camero, Daniel Díaz, Patato Valdés, Paoli Mejias, Pedrito Martínez.

Hi, just wanted to say I love your channel. I use to play first trumpet with an Orquesta called la Optima out of Waterbury CT in the mid 60th. I then joined the Army in 1973 and served for 22 years. Unfortunately after getting out I did not continue playing music instead I became a computer IT Technician and just retired after 24 years so yes, I’m and old guy. I’m trying my hand at getting back to paying music again this time with learning to play the congas. My childhood friend recommended some congas, we use to play together with La Optima his name is Rafael Feliciano who by the way still plays out in LA. He also recommended I check your videos. I remember watching Ray Barreto as a teenager once in Waterbury, CT and then in New York. He was a tall individual that just stood out. I had not seen a Puerto Rican that was that tall and once he started playing his congas it was on real he would pick up the conga and slam it a couple of times on the ground and the crowd would go mad. Yeah, that cat was something else to watch. Let me stop here because I can go on with people that I meet like Larry Harlow, Joey Pastrana some of the greats of yesteryears. Keep up the awesome work y Que Viva La Música. John B.

Hi Eric love your humbleness your videos are great 👍 also I’m 62 yrs old I’m not a musician at all but I’m a junkie for old school salsa I have the upmost respect ✊ for the percussion now Eric just want to make sure I heard you right u took Perdrito Martinez over Monguito /Barretto u differently left me scathing my head that’s like saying M/J or Charles Barkley and another thing for the life of me Mr George Padilla from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 will eat Pedrito lunch this is a real Master en las conga against anyone que viva la Percussion e los músico but like I always said I personally love the Coro’s since I was a kid and Eric Perez as my man says and for my day ☝️ ones out there love you kid from this bori que dios te bendiga siempre your are a B/ful person también tu Familia palante Robert ct born in Brooklyn of course
You are right! Hidalgo is the master of the masters. About me, not my best for now but those why I change my trumpet for percussion in the 70’ : Ralph Mc Donald, Ray Cooper, Joe Lala, Raul Reko and some in Quebec: Michel Seguin, Paul Picard, Jimmy Tanaka. After 35 years of journalisms, I m back to percussions. Thanks for your very interesting videos!!
This is such a hard list to put together. Though I was surprised that no mention of Changuito, Patato or Tata. Also, The guys who are the heavy hitters in Salsa recordings didn’t get mentioned aside from Montalvo. Jimmy Morales, Sammy Garcia, and Papo Pepin are the GOATS when it comes to recording. Nonetheless, putting these lists together are hard! Kudos for putting out your list ✊🏽

@darkeagle Don’t you see that he and I went back and forth here in comments? He agreed with me. And what I mean by mention is to actually put him in the top-5. I don't know, probably he's not as fast or creative as the conga players you've mentioned, but his style is easily recognizable and representative in his band. I'm talking about Poncho Sánchez, it is a thing about the way he tunes his drums, I don't know. I find him unique, not for his technique or speed, but I like very much the way he plays his drums. Díaz is far better than Jafet Murguia in my very personal concept. Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia.
Poncho is definitely up there for me... but one of his greatest influences was Mongo Santamaría... you can hear a lot of Mongo in his playing... so to include Mongo you have to consider those that carry on his style... Poncho was the one that sparked me to listen to other people OTHER THAN Giovanni so trust Poncho’s playing is special to me haha
@@APercussionLife Poncho Sanchez is definitely one you can consider doing a video on. A west coast player, composer and band leader, his drum placement is definitely unique.
