The f16 aged like fine wine. For a plane designed in the 70's, it still really looks futuristic
Fly by wire technology is amazing if the pilot blacked out and was upside down, the computer after a few warnings would flip it back upright and continue to fly, the pilot can also enter in coordinates to the next base and it will fly by itself to that destination.
It looks like a plane from the 70's, genius!!!
That and the F-15. Timeless designs!
Helps that they're constantly upgraded
I mean modern aircraft delay on this Design. Russian jets are pretty much the same, su-27 from 1982 and mig29 aswell from the 70th. I would love to see a F-16 and su-27's in reallife
The amazing thing about the F-16 is that thrust to weight ratio was over 1!
Edit: Wow, thanks for all the likes.
I know that a thrust to weight ratio of >1 has become the norm in military aviation, but as a glider pilot it still amazes me, how powerful these machines are.
Most American fighter jets designed in the 70s have a thrust to weight ratio greater than 1. It’s not something specific to that aircraft.
Technically it can takeoff vertically like a rocket, if we could place it on a launching pad
Is the F15 the same way?
@@gountzas It can, yes. But the F15 does it better.
@@haydenbriggs Better thrust to weight ratio, so yes.
Worked at General Dynamics and helped build the F-16. That plane is pretty much a seat strapped to an engine. It's bad ass!!!!
I have a friend at skunk works in Dallas and he builds the motherboard for the helmets for the f-22 raptor. Said the helmet costs half a million
@@dengmo3625i work at arconic aerospace, we forge large metal rings in various configurations for the jet engines. Just one forging alone can easily cost half A million if not more. When i saw the numbers it made me question my hourly wage lmao.
I remember, I was a salesman for SGI and Apollo computer, and I used to always love the weeks leading up to the Paris airshow and the practices at Carswell Air Force Base!
I did 36 yrs out there myself in the fire dept. I always said the 16 is the series plane to ever crease the sky!!!
@@dengmo3625those helmets r no joke I've never gotten to see the inside but my grandpa was in the Air Force and so we went to an air show and they let him put the helmet on and see the AR tech and he literally cried 😅
F-16 is always smiling! Always happy to see ya!
But I wouldn't want it behind me or coming at me because that smile takes on a whole new meaning 😅😅😅.

Former F-4 pilot I knew when asked why he didn’t move into the F-16 when his unit got it: “I don’t want to be in something that can fly up its own ass.”
Ummmm the F4 blows the 16 away when it comes to raw power and top speeds, the 16 woulda been a downgrade for him on power but a upgrade on maneuverability
@@datUsAfguy099 raw output thrust? Sure. But thrust to weight on a slick airframe? Lmao.
The F16 is ridiculously lightweight with a huge fkoff engine.
@@prfwrx2497 who said anything about the "slick airframe"? Obviously the 16 takes that w, I'm saying from a power perspective the F4 annihilates the 16 everytime..... replying to the original comment saying the F4 pilot did not want to "fly something that can fly up its own ass", when the F4 does and did that everytime that pilot was behind the controls.....🤦🤦 But hey....what would I know right? 🤷
@@datUsAfguy099 what would you know
Yea buts the 4-f is like ur grandpas drag car and the f-16 is a peak f1 car
I remember going to Osan AB about 1991. I was sitting next to a Capt F-16 pilot. About halfway thru the flight, he breaks out a 4” binder. I asked if that was the flight manual. He said well, this is just the emergency procedures! At that moment, I was glad to be a heavy equipment operator on my way to the 554 Red Horse Squadron.
My bosses were red horse,Juan and cesar, best bosses I've ever had.
Semper Ducimus, Dirt Boy!
Would love to see the “tomcat” make a run again. Beautiful planes, made me fall in love with a aviation.
Bring in the super tomcat 21... the alpha model
Agreed, sucks it was decommissioned to keep parts out of Iran's hands.
No top gun made you love the tomcat. Me too.
As a retiring NCO, I was offered an incentive ride. Remembering my days as a young airman, I begged off and asked for a young promising airman from my shop to be given the ride. They did and I’ll never forget the hug he gave me afterwards. I do have a tinge of regret, but I’m still happy with my decision. This is a phenomenal aircraft. The Fighting Falcon!
My father went on 2 incentive rides in his career, and after 26 years of active duty enlisted he still says it’s the funnest non-classified thing he’s ever done.

My grandfather worked on the F 16 project at GD in Fort Worth Test lab,They sent him to white sands where he passed away. I wish he had lived long enough to see the F 16 fly. I got to see the final test on the pilot ejection seat. Great stuff. My grandad was born in 1911, not too much flying around when he was a kid
My grandfather also worked the f16. 👍👍
My brother was at White Sands as an atc.

Dad flew an F-16. He loved it. Most bad ass jet
No not at all there r tons of jets better and better looking not the most badass
My dad flew F-16s too. Nothing better. He still talks ab it weekly
@@christopherzimmet5958 nothing better f35 f22 j20 su57 j10 typhoon gripen su35
Not the most badass by a long shot. Fun fact during the competition for a light fighter unlike the F-16, the F-20 based on the proven F-5 design was more powerful, turned tighter, and was the first US jet capable of AMRAAM.
Worked on an f-16 hated it lol
After my years in the Marine Corps I became a Contract Security Police Officer at Edwards AFB in Mojave Calif. On the F-16 Program and the Air Force chose it over Northrops F-20 Tiger Shark, (20 of them) so they were selling them to the Syrian Air Marshal but the made ONE big Mistake, they tried to bring him through my Gate without a Passport. He was in the U.S. Illegally and I placed him under Arrest. During my time at Edwards I recieved 28 letters of Comendation. I loved it there.
It was also chosen over a lighter version of the f-18. At the time it was known as the YF-17.
F16 is unreal, but not unmatched. The thrust vectoring maneuverability combined with off the charts thrust poundage puts the F22 on a completely different level
I love that its often nicknamed Viper as it was released around the same time as the original BattleStar Galactica
Kind of official now: the latest and arguably final vwrsion is the F-16 V. 😊
Look up dream viper f16
I love the F-16 but nothing beats a colonial Viper.l
As an ex-Eagle driver, I respected the Lawn Dart tremendously. 😂
Thats what I always remember them as. My dad was a jet engine mechanic on 141's, he always calls them the same.
Bomb Dart
betrayal.
Yea I would take a ride in a F15 over a F16 any day. It’s like comparing a v6 mustang to a V8 corvette, the F16 is just cute compared to a F15
Lmaoooo lawn dart is the best thing I’ve heard someone describes the F-16
The f 16s afterburner is BEAUTIFUL
I worked for the 509th Bomb Wing Commander in 1976. One afternoon he told me, (c'mon, we gotta get to the flightline)....we were sitting in the old blue staff car when all of a sudden this fighter came down the flightline at about 20ft high and lifted to a straight up climb. It was my first look at the F-16. I've loved them ever since!!!
My Dad was a Marine Aviator for 9 years and then flew with the Air Force before retiring after 28 years active service. He flew F-4 Phantom with the Marines and then he flew F-4 s with the Air Force before flying F-15s and F-16s. He said the F-15 was fast and a fantastic Air Superiority platform because of it's payload, performance and presence. But in a dog fight going to gun in close , he'd take the F-16 over anything else. He said it's fast and slippery in a fight because it's light and very agile. He calls the F-16 a " Viper " not a
" Falcon " . I've never asked why they were called " Vipers " by their pilots and ground crew rather than " Falcons " . I'm going to find out
Ask Mover, I heard he knows.
They look like the vipers from Battlestar Galactica. The airmen basically renamed it themselves. The brass took notice and made it official.
Yes, my dad said they resemble a Viper if you look at them from the front. I figured that was it. I had no idea that the F-16 was as capable as it actually is until the conversation with my dad yesterday. He told me some things I never would have thought it was capable of.
I grew up in Northern California just north of Beale AFB. I got to watch the SR-71 and U2s Fly over all the time. In fact I still love north of Beale AFB. About 13 miles from the back gate. I still see the U2 fly overhead and fly back into Beale AFB. But the SR - 71 was something to see back then . Northeast of my place up in the Sierra Nevada mountains somewhere the AF and Navy have some fighter thing going on. I see F-18 Super Hornets and AF F-15'S, F-16'S and occasionally the F-22 and F-35 heading up the same direction. Often just a few minutes apart of a flight of 2 planes each. They must have a Mock Dogfight area or bombing range up there. But I think they dogfight because I have never seen any ordinance on any of the hard points on any of the craft. I have seen them fly up there countless times over the last 20 years though. It's usually F/A-18s and F-15 or 16s. But the Gen 5s occasionally but not nearly as often as the Gen 4s
They got the nickname Viper b/c of their resemblence to the reptile when landing.
Love hearing these types of perspectives from experienced pilots
My Dad and I watched F16's take off from EGLIN AFB. He was a retired AF officer and went pretty much wherever he wanted (pre-911). My love for these jets has remained...
I was a vehicle operator at Kadena Ab . One of the best parts of the job was doing aircrew runs. I was fortunate enough to be selected to get an incentive flight on an F-15 in 93, I was 18. I hour flight that I felt for three days after.
Since I was a kid in the 80's, the F-16 has been my spirit animal.
I love the F-16 and I loved working on them! Got to work with a mix of 70's technology and the most cutting edge tech round it.
I'm going to miss them since we've fully committed to the f-35 in the Royal Netherlands Airforce, but I bet I'll fall in love with the JSF as well.
I still don't understand why 'we' will only have F-35s in the future... don't they serve different roles, are they not suitable to compliment eachother??
@@CivilStig the goal of the f-35 is to be the primary aircraft for all types of missions, it’s usage of EW and datalink systems are one of the core parts of this.
For those systems to work at full capacity though, it needs modern tech. Modern tech that isn’t on other legacy aircraft like the f-16. In an age where info is the most powerful tool to a fighter pilot, using aircraft that can’t necessarily provide that info doesn’t make logistical sense.
+less types of aircraft means less upkeep cost
@@CivilStigf35s are multi roles fighters. While they may not be the best in one thing like other keys they are good in all aspects
Those raptors are badass though, Lockheed really showing off what they can do.
@@Damarai_ they are actually better in all modern dogfighting factors. They lose none of the traits from their predecessors that are used in modern dogfighting as manoeuvrability is not key any more.
My daddy flew F86 Sabre. His all time favorite, that he never flew but flew in was by far the 51
It amazing that as these aircrafts get older and a little outdated, they are still incredibly loved and preferred
The F-16 is just a beautiful piece of wonderful aerospace engineering!
I've been told by fighter pilots that the difference between a F16 and all other fighters is, you don't climb into an F16... You strap it on!
Love to the F-16, I did maintenance on that aircraft at my internship and just looking at it it was wonderful every time and wanted to know so much about it
Been working really hard to be able to fly F-35’s with the RAAF. Thank you for helping me!

F4 Phantom❤
Hell yeah!!! I was a jet engine mechanic/crew chief for 13 yrs on them and got to fly in them twice ❤

I received an incentive flight in a F-5, F16 and the Blackhawk . F-5 was agile as anything but the 16 was the shit!!!!! Maj “Conehead” Kelly at Nellis AFB you gave me a no bs this is fighter jockey life experience!
I worked over at General Dynamics in Ft. Worth in the 80’s. We would ride a bike along the F16 assembly line. Always enjoyed watching the trial runs and the engine testing.
One of my favorites along with the F-15 , i found out recently my uncle was an engineer in the development of the F-16. And the fact he got to ride in one is a dream for anyone who is a fan. Very nice clip!
I totally agree. Except that flying the F-16 is more akin driving a Ferrari that was engineered with the reliability of Honda. Unlike a Ferrari, the F-16 will never leave you stranded and is always ready to give the pilot the ride of his or her life.
Tell that to al the Viper drivers who had to bail out because their only engine quit!!
Finally some one who isn’t obsessed with the F-22 and actually likes he viper
F-16 is obsolete in a world where a f22 can detect and kill it from 100+ miles out
I love the f16 amd f14 both planes were and are amazing planes.
F16 has a an unstable aerodynamic shapes, that will roll on it's own, but held in place by a flight controller unit that keeps it on a knifes edge, just makes it SO versatile and fast. I LOVE this aircraft, and have been working with avionics on it for 10 years back in the days.
What he talks about was commonly referred to as a sportswagon configuration, where you'd set out without any droptanks and just a couple of dummy tubes on the wingtip to counter the vortexes created there... they loved flying it like that.
I’d love to fly the Po-2, It’s bi-plane, outer cockpit, slow, easy to use (as from what I’ve researched about it) and has some good history behind it
Could never get over the single engine design, double engine layouts just hit right. The F-15 Strike Eagle makes my root fizz.
You are the only normal one here.
@@MidNightRider2001 Bless you sir lol
Same here. I never really liked the single engine look. Double engine is where it is at.
And same with the F-15. It is such a beautiful jet to me.

The 16 has always been one of my favorite jets
I was in high school when the F-16 came out.
It's been my fav ever since. Seeing it go vertical, and ACCELLERATE, at takeoff won my heart.
I dont know much about the tech specs and all that, but for me the Hornet is my favourite. Then perhaps the Strike Eagle, Phantom and Tomcat... the Falcon is way down on my list :)
That first scene is a Dutch pilot on his run on the Vliehors shooting range back in the '90's. They make it a sport to fly as low as possible on their departure on the end of the run. This one still holds first place almost touching the dunes the tower is located between.
👍thats the first thing i thought😎
I’ve always thought the f-16 was the most run of the mill average fighter in our arsenal
Run of the mill is probably not the correct term for the most popular fighter jet ever made, with more airframes in service globally than any other
Cool to hear today. When I was a kid that was my favorite jet. It was the pinnacle of going really fast in my mind. Beyond any car or even a spaceship because you can turn on a time in 3 dimensions. Bad ass 🔥
I was an Air Force Forward Air Controller, Close Air Support, and I'd have to agree with him on the F-16 being like a Ferrari - fast and sexy. But for the purposes of my job, I'd have to go with the A-10. We had a prayer in the office of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", it was a photo of the F-16 Screaming Eagle, the A-10 Warthog and the F-111 Aardvark. The F-16 could make a pass or two, three if we were lucky, whereas the A-10 could stick around, loitering for multiple, earth shattering passes, with the 30mm rounds landing well before you heard them. Well, we heard them, but I doubt if the other side heard much of anything. I once controlled an F-111 during an exercise in Germany for a bird colonel who had showed up at the TOC and wanted to see some air. All we had left for the day were the two Aardvarks scheduled for beacon bombing. They came down less than 200 ft., easily, and, with wings swept back, proceeded to suck every piece of paper, maps. anything that wasn't tied down, into the views coming off of the wings. That Colonel was as happy as a kid on Christmas, jumping up and down, laughing. Damn, I had a fun job.
Fun fact about the fighting Falcon; it accelerates quickest vertically. Living right next to an Air Force base I see them all the time. Hearing the roar of one at full thrust is awesome. It is nice to hear that sound unless you're an enemy. It's the most terrifying sound of it's coming for you. Don't phuk around and you won't have to find out.
If it's coming at them, they never will hear it.
@Eddie Haskell they probably will, but it will definitely be the last thing they hear, lol.
@@eddiehaskell1957 either way all I'm saying is I live right by an AB I see them and am woken up by them at times. Even if it's headed for the enemy some still hear it.
What is the reason why vertical is quickest for the F16?
@@KLucero22 my guy, you'd have to ask Bill Nye cause I'm not a scientist. I can't explain exactly why it does that or how it's done.
A high school classmate who flew the Hog out of flight school but later took a contract with the Arizona National Guard as an instructor pilot in the F-16 while he flew for a major airline. I asked him which plane he liked better. And his reply was: the A-10 was fun with the gun, but the “Lawn Dart” was fun all the time.
how did he become a hog pilot out of high school? thats not possible because you need to be an officer to be a pilot, therefore you need a 4yr degree. Enlisted havent been pilots since ww2, and that was a very rare, limited use amount.
Sorry i think i read your comment wrong lol no prob admitting that
Avionics back shop for the F-16 at Nellis, Kadena and Luke. Was lucky enough to get 2 back seat rides in the jet. While it was mostly a restricted flight for lack of training ( I was not altitude certified), they were better than the E ticket rides at Disneyland. From Luke to Lake Powell, screwed around on the range and two touch and goes, 90 minutes. Speed under 300 knots (requirement), a few outside loops and even let me fly it for a few. A remarkable plane.
I was lucky to fly two times in a F-16. Once with Viper in Cold Lake Canada and when I left the team Air Force Thunderbirds. I also had incentive flights in a F-4E George AFB and a T-33 McChord AFB.
As much as I love the F14, the viper is one amazing machine.
The F-16 is a very awesome jet.
My favorite is an F-16. I grew up around my uncle, and he was an F-16 fighter pilot, and flight instructor. The F-18 comes in as a close second.
I used to work on the F-4 and F16s. That F-16 was and still is the wickedest little dog fighter made.
F-22 is the king.
@@richlo8887 The F-16 was designed to be purely a dog fighter... the F-22 is an air superiority fighter, meant to replace the F-15. Very different combat roles IRL.

Kelly Johnson told General Dynamics that their design had insufficient internal fuel capacity.

F-16 hangs in my memory from the “ movie Iron Eagle “
Ha! I remember that movie! LgJR was "Chappie" right?!? They stole a bunch of fully armed, fully fueled war planes to rescue their shot down dad! Man, im glad they were so qualified cuz my God, im pretty sure they had limitless air to air missikes, they were just a freakin Hollywood fly swatter leaving smoking holes in the desert in their wake! Man, they even had enough extra room in the cockpit to seat their badly injured, recently tortured and ready to throw in the towel father! Great movie when i was like....8. Not so good at the moment! Haha!
@@theoneway22 Still a good movie! You've just got to have the right mind set when sitting down to enjoy it again! Chappie Sinclair & Doug, a "very accomplished Cessna pilot", went in & saved the day & Doug's dad! 😀👍
Don't forget that the F-16 comes in 2 seat versions, as well.
Most of the jet scenes were fake and could never happen. You can't fire missiles or the gun on the ground. Impossible. Ruined the movie.....
If you wanna know more read about Colonel John Boyd a Korean War pilot who pushed for the ability of the F16 and championed EM theory. And it was projected that the F18 would be slightly better due to 2 engines but test pilots said the F16 won close fights every time b/c of the extra turning capability (buttonhook escape turn).
I remember the very first airshow I went to with my family. Think it was around ‘99 or 2000 and it was at Laughlin AFB.
1st jet I saw flying thru the air was the F/A-18 Hornet, and it just grabbed my attention for a good while. That was until the main event started. Will never forget the impression the sleek white with blue and red accents the Thunderbirds’ F-16 left on me.
Then later on as I got games like Ace Combat or H.A.W.X. I would always pick the Falcon. Regardless of mission.
Now, every time I get to go to an airshow, I hope I get a chance to get a glimpse of this beautiful girl up in the air. Just love her.
Long Live The Bird of Prey!
Has he ever flown the F22? It would be a tie between those for me. I think the additional aerobatic capabilities in the F22 would be too awesome.

According to my grandad who was in the RAF, the best plane to fly was the Blackburn Buccaneer, but for some bizarre reason his favourite was the Nimrod (basically a militarised De Havilland Comet airliner).
In his career he flew Buccaneers, Nimrods, Vulcans, Shackletons and Sea Vixens.
Every airshow I went to in the 80s and 90s the F16 pilots always had the biggest smile.
You gotta love the fighting Falcon
I love the f-16, how they designed it was just so cool
Watched the Iron Eagle movie in the 80's and everyone dreamed to be a Pilot. Thanks for the Video.
Being a plane enthusiast and being born in america really is like being a fat kid in a candy store
