Mark Milley, was so shaken that then-President Donald Trump and his allies might attempt a coup or take other dangerous or illegal measures after the November election that Milley and other top officials informally planned for different ways to stop Trump, according to excerpts of an upcoming book obtained by CNN. If someone had told me, even as recently as 10 years ago, that this would happen in the US, I would have told them they were crazy. I no longer know my own country.

When I was a midshipman in the middle 60s I read a book that shaped my understanding of the role of the military to this day. If someone does not understand General Milley, they should read The Soldier and the State. It wouldn't hurt to also review Cicero and the coup attempted by Cataline.

The military pledges allegiance to the constitution, not the president. If a president dismisses an election held under constitutional standards just so he could stay in power, the military has a duty to act. For what it is worth, I commend General Miley.

Well, we did have 81 million voters who came out last November. We need to make sure we all keep coming out, and voting out those elected officials who still support Trump and his lies about the election and the insurrection.
We are still in a dangerous place, but there is cause for hope. And there are some in the Republican Party, as well as those who have left the party in protest, who see the danger. This should be one area where liberals and conservatives can come together and be united.
What’s disappointing is that there aren’t more Liz Cheneys up on Capitol Hill. (I never thought I would be in such strong agreement with her). Here in Massachusetts, we have a moderate Republican Governor who has never been a Trump supporter.
But far too many Congressional Republicans are still part of the MAGA cult, and openly supporting a fascist movement trying to take over their party. They need to remember THEIR oaths to the Constitution, recognize the threat to that Constitution, and publicly disassociate themselves from Trumpism.

There’s an interesting futuristic / science fiction movie titled “The Fifth Element” sort of done in a French farce style written by Luc Besson. Society had devolved to a clueless citizenry, over bearing police, an idiot president and only the military preventing everything from coming apart at the seams. It is interesting to look back at that 30 or so year old film and see that it foreshadowed what we are experiencing in real life.
