    Not even gonna lie, this mixtape grows on u like crazy. At first when I heard it I thought it was wack, maybe because I wasn't expecting it from Gambino. But years later, I think it's great. It really shows Gambinos versatility as an artist.

    this project was not a sell out commercial chasing album it was him doing something different. bino hangs with a lot of rappers so he made some shit with them and he listens to a lot of trap shit so that was most likely the influence. it was an experiement.

    I never thought Royalty was such a huge suprise, Gambino always had that Trap Flow but was a little more sentimental on the EP & Camp. Listen back to the mystery team ep or even just the I am just a rapper mixtapes. Sure they're not as bragadoshis but he's always had that style in his arsenal

    I've been with Gambino since Sick Boi. Donald wanted to play the role and have some fun with this mixtape. He used his current success with BET and gaining new fans through different ways, and his newly made friendships with some of the hottest rappers out. It's not him abandoning who he is. He's just wanting to have fun and play a role because he can. I'd probably do the same thing.

    i think childish gambino did royalty to broaden his fan base a little for his new album because people didn't believe he could rap hard but on his next album he is going to drop more of his style again so that more of his new fans can can hear what he is really about

  • @Krossytetsuo

    Myke has some really good points. Gambino is pulling back from what got him here in the first place because of critics. I feel like it is happening in other ventures in his life like the fact he is leaving Community. Regardless, as a fan you want him to progress as an artist and not be one dimensional BUT we have seen a glimpse of a "old" C.G. on his new track, Centipede. I hope we get a project from him before the summer is over.

    I hated Royalty when I first heard it because it wasn't him, but it was mostly to get more popular with fans and features. It grew on me, just glad he went back to his style on his next album.

    this is why i was deeply looking forward to this review, i love the dynamic you guys have different point of views, and once again i felt the same way myke does. I felt all his lines were not as clever as they were on camp and i hope this mixtape is just a HEY I CAN THUG IT OUT. I loved camp it was one of last years top 5 for me. The features were really well done but he didnt stand out compared to them, toxic was my fav because danny brown went hard. Thank you guys for reviewing this. Nas next?

    I definitely understand where Myke's point. I just think that since Childish Gambino has proclaimed that he is diverse he can put out this type of mixtape. If it was an album I would be a bit disappointed; only because, I would have loved to see the other "sides" of his artistry. Being that Royalty is a mixtape and we've seen what Gambino can do. . . .it's not that big of a deal. I liked the mixtape, but hey I'm a southern chick. lol

    I feel that some of the reviewers aren't letting him have his creative freedom as an artist

    Awesome review, i felt the same thing when listening to this mixtape as C-Town.
    Camp was totally different, slow songs, real stuff.
    The only track which i like on the album was: we ain't them.
    I hope he was just experimenting and not listening to critics that his sound wasn't black enough.

    I will be worried if this style starts to dominate his next project. I think it's cool and fine for an artist to experiment. I can't wait to see what else he embarks on, because I know he's passionate about his artistry and it will be dope.

  • @chicagomycity
    @chicagomycity 12 років тому +2

    I totally agree. I really think he did it on purpose to say I CAN do this shit, just to reel the urban crowd in, then I think he is going to give them his other shit. Like C-Town, said he wasn't getting attention from the broader Hip Hop community. Camp (and his previous tapes) flew under the radar a bit. Sure enough, on my facebook feed all my mainstream music friends were sharing "Royalty"... thats all it takes. He wanted his skills to be recognized. We will see what the future holds though.

    Exactly! That's my issue, if he would have come out like this from the start, I wouldn't have had a problem. Hell, if he didn't stress how unique he was on all his previous works, I might have accepted this transition a little more, but what made love Gambino is like what Myke says, "I can see myself in Gambino's lyrics"....same for me I'm a suburban black kid who lies boom-bap and other genres of music...idk maybe I get too connected with the music haha.

    His wordplay was were there put he added swag instead of what i would expect. In all honestly him rapping over Grizzly Bear was amazing as well the Run this Town freestyle he's capable of do anything he wants. He does have room for experimentation to some degree while he still be himself for me i love all the shit that made him popular All the Shine is an all time favorite.

    I think something that ALOT of people are missing is the fact that Gambino himself said that this is an experiment. He's experimenting working with different artists making different beats. I'm sure his next album will have a lot of elements from Camp with a couple elements from Royalty. Plus, I thing this is Gambino's best project for showcasing that he can actually rap. I mean come on "Fandingo my mandingo, we should do a movie; groupies looking like the Yakuza in my Jacuzzi"

    Thus was a very important tape for me. First time I ever heard Chance, Ab-Soul, Q, Nipsey, Danny Brown, etc... fire verses from RZA, Bun B, and mf BECK. Greatly expanded my music taste and got me thru a awkward transition as a person.

    I get the concept of the name Childish Gambino, but he was ALWAYS Childish from his first album "Sick Boi" all the way to "Camp", and then he does something completely polar with Royalty. The only song he's done this year that was like his earlier stuff was "More than Normal" with Alan Wilkis. Everything else, "Favorite song" with Chance, "Young, Rich, Fly and Famous" with Cyhi, "FDB" with Young Dro, "Think of me" with DJ Premiere were all like Royalty. I just hope you're right about his next LP

  • @theBentley92

    gam is an artist who enjoys pushing and pursuing other creative boundaries (comic, writing, rapping) and he does the same within the genre of rap. He is displaying how easily he can go between alternative rap to the more mainstream sound with ease. It's more of a testament to his artistic range rather than a complete abandonment of his previous sound.

  • @TheMadvillainy
    @TheMadvillainy 12 років тому +2

    I think Gambino was trying to match up to the features on the album. Guys like ScHoolBoy Q, Danny Brown, Bun B, Ghostface, they don't really match the aesthetic Gambino usually has in his song. I don't know if it's a permanent change or not, but he definitely was trying to come across more urban to match the features on the album.

    In my personal opinion i've been a CG fan for four years now and i feel ROYALTY was an experiment that work out in some ways but, also left me puzzle. However, i did enjoy it overall i like some of the productions like Shoulda Known, Bronchitis,We Aint Them, One Up were great. He was due for a feature project so i don't feel like he'll change commercial at all.

  • @TheBlock97

    As a huge Childish Gambino fan I felt that Royalty was a experimental album. On Camp, EP,Culdesac,IAJAR 2 he didn't have any features.I think he wanted to learn from people that he looked up to.I didn't like Royalty as much as Camp, but it was still a solid project. Hopefully he will take what he learned from everyone and put it on the next album.

    "Waka, Jeezy, and Future got the streets locked down, copycats making sure TIP keep that crown"
    On another note, I feel like Gambino did totally change up his style, which I did feel some kind of way about. With this being said, like Feefo said, I believe he did down south better than most other artist, and he isn't even a "down south artist"... Kudos to CG

    I totally agree with this review. I thought Camp was a much better and polished product. However i still place this project in my top 5 of the year mainly because i still enjoyed the tape. The sound was completely different however in my eyes i see this as gambino experimenting with different sounds. Im just waiting for his next project now and see where he goes from there because i only got that true "different" gambino sound on a couple of tracks. Overall good product but he can do much better

  • @TheMusicalInquiry
    @TheMusicalInquiry 12 років тому +1

    I get what Myke and Kinge are saying about him changing, but on the songs that Gambino was alone, or with someone like Beck, he was his regular self. This factor tells me that on his next project, if he's alone for the most part, he'll be doing the same stuff that he used to do, which I am very hopeful for.

  • @AstonishTheProducer
    @AstonishTheProducer 12 років тому +1

    I felt like this wasn't as great as earlier projects, but it wasn't bad at all. The features were great, the production was banging, and his rhyming fit well for this type of style. I felt like he did made this mixtape to show people that there's a different side to him, that he can do this type of hip-hop better than most artists these days. Overall, it felt like he was experimenting, and I'm sure Gambino doesn't care about gaining new listeners, he's already made it big with Camp.

    what i think his plan was to give you what people dont really do on albums such as Camp and then put out something that attracts attention to the REAL hip-hop fans then bring them into a world such as Camp so i think he got it under control, but i think he is right about him not having a big audience

    Please, listen to the first track on Royalty. He explains why he made the mixtape, and it actually does have a deeper meaning that seems to pass people by. Donald started from nothing, and now he's something, hence, he's "Royalty". It makes sense why he would made this mixtape. I agree there are some throwaways, but you'll like it more if you learn the concept behind the project.

    Nah, man. I've been literally following Gambino since Sick Boi. I have his mcDJ stuff that was released forever ago. I'm a huge fan of this guy, I'm just not gonna get upset at him for wanting to try something different. Living as a black male in America is contradictory in itself. You gotta fight to be who you are while fighting to be who you are among the people that look like you and fighting against everyone else who doesn't get it. This reflects that dual citizenship of sorts.

    In my opinion, I think Gambino did this mixtape to prove that he could rap on this style of production and content, better than the rappers who do it on a consistent basis, that's what I got from it. I will agree though that his content was far different on this project than what it usually is. This project reminded me of Wale's Back to the Feature where it was very collaboration heavy and it was a bunch of emcees just rapping. If that's what you as a listener are a fan of you'll like this tape

    If a rapper's gonna dramatically change his sound, I've got no problem with them doing it on a free mixtape.
    That said, I thought a lot of the features on this mixtape were either weak or average (aside from Ghost, Danny, Ab, and Q), and I completely agree with Myke that it sounded unfinished. It really irritated me on Bronchitis when the song cut out after 40-45 secs, especially since that was sounding like one of the better Gambino verses on the mixtape.

    The third guy/fifth guy.... are they fuckin' serious? I mean really? These guy's critiques are so subjective. When critiquing music you have to be objective. By the way, don't think that because Gambino "acts nerdy" on Camp that he can't have any other qualities within his personality. Hell, many people think I'm a nerd, BUT in that same breath I have a nuanced swagger that would make most of these guys who think they are "hip" nowadays look like a fuckin' "Goofy" as they they like to call'em. Also, much of what people consider "nerdy" about him actually isn't being nerdy, it's simply him being his own man and following his own dream and being introspective about it while creating new culture. People only call it nerdy because it doesn't fit snug within the parameters of how THEY live life and how they think other people should act or exist. Go take a look at a Chief Keef video... now that guy is goofy. Oh yeah... Gambino doesn't give a fuck about a "black card". Most of the guys who claim to hold one aren't black.... .they're slaves(mentally).

  • @GoliathWarfare
    @GoliathWarfare 12 років тому +1

    Yeah but he still brought that substance in his other two mixtapes, just a more concentrated burst of it on the albums, so we expected it to exceed those two and it didn't. He didn't make every beat, otherwise it wouldn't have said "Produced by" on the side of every track and had many different producers. Beck was great on it too. But many of the songs and his execution of them did sound very commercialized, even though he did it well, he was still talking about general rapper stuff.

    I love anything old Gambino. There was passion and power behind his lyrics. In royalty yes to me it sounds like some commercial stuff that I don't particularly care for, but like most artists Gambino experiments and waits for feedback using these mixtapes. Whether he sold out or not is dependent on what he comes up with in the next few years. Hopefully more of his unique style and less of this mainstream money and bitches crap.

    If you were to listen to the album not knowing CG, you'd probably like it. But since he completely changed the style people hate cus it's "not him" dont let the beat distract you from the lyrics. His flow in this mixtape is the same just changed up to suit the beat. Plus he's always going to be that nerdy Oreo but he's in a different stage in life experiencing new things so people change thus, changing the topic of his flow.

    Oh I perfectly understand that, I'm a musician too, I know doing the same thing over again will get boring, the artist has to grow and mature with their music. I liked the mixtape, but the only thing I didn't like was that I liked him because he is different and what he had done with Royalty sounded like any other southern gangsta rapper's mixtape. If I wanted that I could just listen to the radio. I'd like to see him grow and change in a more unique direction, but I did like the mixtape.

    i really liked the mixtape, it was something different from culdesac and camp, its nice to hear old gambino but sometimes you just have to break away from the "i was poor when i was a kid and i am a nerd" style that was in those two and he did it here, this was him on his "ATL" swag and it showed and I liked it, wasn't my favorite, but i still liked it especially "won't stop, unneccessary, arrangement and shoulda known" of course if you were expecting emo gambino you would be upset

    The dude with the dreadlocks is completely right. Childish kept saying earlier on that he would always do him, regardless of what critics said-he had basically told Pitchfork to go fuck themselves in one song. But it's pretty easy to tell from this entire mix tape that he really took the shit talked about Camp to heart and drastically changed his sound to please them. It's a shame that he copped out like that 'cause in turn he's lost that unique flair that all his older stuff had.

    When I first listened to this mixtape, I just listened to it at face value, not thinking about the fact that it's Gambino and not really paying too much attention to the underlying meaning. Then after I finished listening the first time, I thought, hey this is good sounding mixtape... Then I remembered it was Gambino and that everything Myke and said came to me. I could not quote on this album. So basically I liked the album but it was not a Gambino record and I've been a fan since Culdesac

    He made like every beat on that mixtape, and even experimented with other producers and did a song with Beck. Also you forget that Culdesac and Camp were albums .

    I'm kinda on the fence with him. To me, he comes close to being a great musician, but he can improve on his rhymes a little more, and I agree with Mike on using artist like Girls and Grizzly Bear on a beat, I thought those tracks were cool, wish he'd go further in that direction...

    Gambino said himself this was a experiment he hasn't changed he just wanted to try 'black rap' or show he can do that, which he did do better.
    The Culdesac and Camp Gambino will be back!

    Not sure if you noticed, but Ken was in this video as well and actually brought up the point that I cosigned on. Did you happen to see that? Why is everything directed at me like I'm the only one speaking?

    It was, "Wake, Future, Gucci got the streets lock down. Copy Cats making sure Tip keep that crown.", in the line before he was talking about how he was talking to his brother about what Atlanta wants music wise.

    Its not that it had to be the same as his other works, it was that it sounded the same as any other rapper's mixtapes. It was commercialized and didn't have the substance that he brought in Camp and Culdesac.

    Danny Brown, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul... only heard Toxic and Unnecessary but all their verses were killin Gambino's, prob cuz it sounds authentic. Gambino has flow, alliteration, enunciation, and punchlines. Some of my friends like this guy and he def has talent but...doesn't bump in the phone.

    his beats were still inventive to me, prime example the tracks with beck. But most of it is that happy kind of yeah we on top kind of music so i can understand you not liking it, like when you said you prefer sad music to happy and that the happy makes you sad and the sad makes you happy. Anyway i do appreciate that you replied to me and don't get me wrong i like you mike and usually i side with you. I'm more of an introvert but if i'm good mood (also im 17 just graduated high school) i'll put

    Gambino
    2008-2009 - nerdy swag
    2010-2011 - more nerd less swag
    2012 - less nerd more swag
    i liked this mixtape though. thats how his life was changed after camp. more people noticed him, contacted him, etc. he is learning to be a better artist from others.
    this reflects his life after camp, i guess.

    i dont think Myke can judge this because like most fans said, if you followed him you expected the mixtape to be different from everything else. Its not his best work but i still liked it. I can completely understand where Myke is coming from with his arguement but its an experiment and as an artist Gambino should be allowed to change his sound when he wants.
