These drums are just getting more and more popular. Kind of hard to beat for quieter gigs. If I had room in my life for another drum.... The six-lug hole pattern actually makes a lot of sense: you can tune a little lower than you could with more lugs.
I love 6 lug drums, it’s obviously not ideal for certain drums, but anything 14” or below it’s fine, and even on the 18” kick it’s nice.

Never thought to do concert toms, but I did build some toms.
yeah, i saw that vid too ... THEY SOUD GOOD ON MY END WITH HEADPHONES ... my suggestion relates to 'nesting toms' (concert or toms without resonate heads) inside each other will make this set SUPER-EASILY to transport ... that said, the set you built is very nice - ciao, e

Have you ever considered building a wooden version of Rotary-Toms?
The well aged hardwood like poplar is perfect for this application and the sound is amazing!

Brandon! Thanks for checking it out, I’ve been a huge fan of your channel for years ever since you posted that vlog of the Mike Johnston/JP Bouvet camp. I noticed the exact same thing as you about the control you have with your pedal to affect the tone. I actually just rebuilt this kick with a slightly deeper shell to help give it a little more volume and stability on gigs, but it was a great kick for the year I used it like this.
when burying the sound is about minor third lower, but much shorter. Interesting.
Here’s a helpful tip for determining lug placement on a drum.
*If you divide the circumference of the drum by the number of lugs you want to apply, the Answer will give you the perfect symmetrical placement of the lugs on the shell.*
I just happened to be converting an 18x18 8-lug floor tom into an 18x16 6-lug kick drum.
It’s an old standard, but the fewer lugs you have, the lower and more vintage and varied the drum will sound, it works out perfect for small diameter kicks.
So far a custom cut maple shell that I went “Cocktail” on with a 16x14 5-lug configuration is the lowest lug count I dare apply to anything larger than 10 inch diameter.
To be honest I had my doubts about that project, but that kick drum…

I believe a 12” 5-lug wooden rotary snare drum would complement your new kick drum and give you an eclectic range of snare sound options to cover any music you might be playing with just a turn left or right
I’d make the component pieces all new applications of existing concepts and let that unique stain tie them all together.

Killer sound. I just got a Dixon little roomer 20x7 kick and this is the exact sound I’m trying to get out of it. Hopefully a pinstripe batter and a coated ambassador reso will get the job done. Great video!
I use a super kick on the batter and it gives me a lot of flexibility, but let me know how a more traditional set up sounds!
Nice job, you could use a thin peace of MDF as a base The size of your tablesaw face that will keep it from scratching your material (from a carpenter) A brand new blade preferably a finish blade will make the cut cleaner you also can use a hobby knife and score it very lightly with a ruler if you sliced the wood It’s less likely to splinter which can happen when you send finish wood through a dull blade. But no matter what your building touchups are part of it lol really nice job I would’ve maybe added a couple extra Lugnuts probably just for looks but you got yourself a nice little kit there and little , And heck you built itlooks cool
That’s a great idea, and this kick is really the start of a number of drums I’ve built, so fun to look back and see the progress in what I’ve learned.

Great stuff! I have owned Premier Artist Heritage Club Kits, Ludwig Modular (with the 2 skinny kicks) & yours sounds as good for a fraction of the cost and an extra cool factor!
Thanks man! I've actually owned the Premier travel kit as well and it was really nice. I will say, circumstance of me already having a bunch of parts on hand made this project super affordable, I'm currently wrapping up building toms for this kit, and with having to buy more parts like hoops, lugs, etc I can see why it's just easier to buy a kit and not each individual piece. As somebody who does a little bit of it, I don't think you should be scared to try and learn. The craftsmen at these drum companies are in their own world, but you could certainly get started by working on some cheaper drums and modifying them first.

I'm not saying a woman can not learn how to make a drum kit but most would not want to do what you had to do to make. Men love rolling in the dirt, most women don't. Hope you get my meaning. You know what would be cool? A skinny 18" diameter snare. You could easily convert this I bet.
I ended up rebuilding this kick to be slightly deeper, but still a cool idea, but I don’t know where I would find 18” snare wires.
@@malonedrum I don't know either, but I know that A&F makes an 18x4" snare. You might be able to use 16" snares.

Nice, I’ve used that sound a few times before and it can be a cool contrast to typically punchy kick sounds. I love the way they do that on “Deantown” by Vulfpeck. Thanks for subscribing.

I'm currently in the middle of building a 6 tom kit from 10", 12", and 14" toms, cut down to make shallow concert toms/timp toms. Just done the staining, will be doing the spray finish over the coming days. Not quite decided whether to do gloss or satin finish.. Good to hear how many coats you did - I've stained & sprayed a couple of test blocks to get an idea of end look, and knowing that I'll need more than a couple of coats is very helpful!

I think staining the interior of the drums on concert toms would be a nice clean look.
@@malonedrum As it goes, I've done exactly that! Purple in and out. I've also painted the open edge in lieu of having rims. A fairly bright white, so with low light and a UV lamp it will be like The Mysterons have come for dinner :-)

@@shilohstreetpictures2640 the bass lugs were dual ended snare lugs off a Ludwig snare, and the tension rods I just had around so I didn’t really measure

The great thing if these where VST's is if naturally tuned high, pitch tuning it down would still sound natural unlike pitching up.
Do mean like where DW turns the direction of the grain? I’m not a huge believer in that stuff? But I suppose if it helped get more low end it could be a nice way to compensate for loss of depth

Actually I believe it’s almost note for note the groove from Cissy Strut by The Meters, but I know that’s probably Stantons biggest influence for groove/funk drumming, so I see your point!

Yeah, I think plenty of people prefer matching hoops, I like the contrast of an offset hoops. Also, as somebody who constantly recycles parts for future projects, if they are more neutral, I can use these hoops on another drum without refinishing them.

@@dna6380 Not really, honestly I don’t consider myself a drum builder for sale, I make mistakes, sometimes those mistakes are present in my work and I choose to live with them, sometimes I cut corners because it’s my choice. It takes the joy out of building for others when those options fade away to make a customer happy. But if a friend wanted something, and knew the deal, yeah I wouldn’t mind helping him out for a little bit of compensation.

I rebuilt this drum over again with a new shell to get a little bit deeper drum, but if somebody was interested, I could happily build one for a price.

That’s a 13” x 3” Ludwig 70s Picollo snare. I don’t use it a whole lot, but it fits into the skinny kit well. Good luck on your build, are you building from scratch or cutting down an existing drum?
Oh wow! I didn't expect this. Sounds good so far. Tama mini and Yamaha hip gig are both on my radar... That cut down Gretsch looked awesome!!! I already have a Safari. Have you played the Safari?
I owned the Tama Club Jam mini, never was into the safari. Have this shell left over if you ever want to buy it, get the parts and build it out for yourself!

@@williamperri3437 I used the lugs to rebuild and make a deeper shell. So it’s just a shell that is finished with bearing edges and holes for the lugs

I think you captured the sound of this kick perfectly into text.
Yo, sissy strut, you should build a low volume kit. I've had some ideas in the past on how to do that... do you remember about five or ten years ago seeing that snare drum that had circles cut into it? They had big holes. I think something like that cut into the kit as well as some sort of internal dampening system glued to the wood.
Cutting holes in snares like that sometimes actually makes it louder. I know that's part of the appeal of why OCDP was doing it.

nice build! I am about to dismantle a drum set for cleaning.. then re-contruction then sell.. can you recommend an electric screw driver for this task? I'm not sure brand, volts and size. It is a red sparkle olive badge Ludwig kit 12 13 16 22 from late 70s or so..
Thanks for reaching out, any brand/model should be fine, just get one of those drum key drill bits for removing heads. Also, I wouldn’t recommend using a high power/torque setting when putting screws back on, and maybe avoid putting heads back on with a drill until you’re more comfortable with your drill. I only use it to get the tension rods close to making contact with the hoop.

Oh yeah, I’ve played that one. I will say.... I wish this was 1-3” deeper as I think it would give it a little extra rigidity but it’s pretty stable
Hey mike what would you say happens the shorter depth you go? even from 14" to 12"?
Hey Corey, I think that small of a depth change would be pretty unnoticeable especially if you’re doing anything to muffle it. I will say this kick from the video I gig with all the time and it just doesn’t have the presence or volume a similar size kick with more depth has. It doesn’t sound too much different tone wise though. I love it, and I muffle it, so I can’t say it’s terribly different.

What is your opinion on shallow BDs in general? Marching band BDs have always been very shallow, same with funerary processions etc. Bonham's 14x24 kick is proportionately not much deeper than yours. I tend to think that is optimal. What about you?
I think 14” depth bass drums are really great at any diameter (18” - 26”), but I have this weird obsession with cutting out a little depth on as many drums as I can in general.
The old “scotch” style kicks you’re talking about are also really fun in my opinion.
8 ply keller?
Nivej8180 yes it is 8 ply! It’s a Keller Maple VSS. The shells I bought for the toms are 5 ply though

The stuff you happened to have on hand are the expensive parts of the restoration. It's like buying a hood ornament and saying, oh, and I just so happened to have the Mercedes that goes with it.
Yeah, I know my situation doesn’t apply to anybody building this. I do believe if you had a cheap bass drum lying around, this would be a fun mod, but probably not a practical option for most to build from scratch. I built matching toms from scratch and those were much more expensive, but overall I love this kit and used it on most all of my gigs this summer.
@@malonedrum OK, I exaggerate a little, but you get what I'm saying. Those hoops are expensive and the heads? Definitely not cheap. One head cost more than the shell.
@@alanduncan1980 I understand your concern. I think I tried to address this in the video on the cost subject towards the end. I always keep old heads, so I typically have a lot of 18” and 20” heads available. Thanks for your input though, I understand not everyone is in my situation with having extra drum parts lying around.

Sweetwater sales reps are annoying AF. Spam the hell out of my phone after first purchase. Never again.
I can’t say I haven’t gotten some calls from Sweetwater when I didn’t really need them, but I wouldn’t stop shopping with them because they have diligent customer service. I feel like they are the best out there for music gear.

On the original version, I used a style that arm attached with floor Tom leg bracket mounts, and a spur that fits in there, but I ended up switching them to more modern, folding style to be easier to set up each time
