Honestly one of my favorite parts about the LEGO movie is the fact that it actually looks like a LEGO movie. The mix of the realistic lighting to literally everything being made of LEGO bricks gives me a warm feeling inside just like when I was young and playing with my bin full of legos in the basement.
It bothers me that this film didn't win best animated feature. It even didn't get animated. This film was absolute genius in its animation, and that's what a best animated feature should be.
The Lego movie was something completely unexpected. I went into the theaters expecting nothing, and got a pleasant surprise when I realized they actually cared a lot for this movie and it was showing as quality. Thanks for the interesting video.
The LEGO movie was probably the most nostalgic movie I have ever watched and this was exactly the reason. They captured the feeling me and my friends had playing (and sometimes filming) with LEGO when we were young. This was my childhood.
Olodus My dad especially loved the sound effects because it reminded him of when he would play with legos, like when the ship would sail away with a "brbrbrbrbr"
Im right with you bro. This movie was so nostalgic and amazing to me. And is now one of my all time favorites because of how much of a nod it is to my childhood.
4:59 i cant help myself imagined 5 kids take a tour on lego factory, the first kid who fell into a trap fell into a lego river and the owner says "Hey! Build the rescue helicopter" etc etc
Yeah I'm starting to do Lego stop motion cause there's barely some so I want to be the person who will last more than others so I just tested if other people liked it so I might do more!
Phil Lord/Chris Miller have a talent for taking a premise that seems like another lazy cash grab based on a preexisting IP, but then transforming it into something much better. The 21 and 22 Jumpstreet movies are great movies especially considering that they could have been schlock like some recent dredged up 90's show movies like CHIPS and Baywatch. I haven't seen it but Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which was also written by the pair, is also well regarded.
Spencer Williams I walked into Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs with very low expectations and walked out more impressed that I should have been. Miller/Lord don't get enough credit in this industry.
ossian Not 2006, but I remember, I enjoyed every single minute of it, this video made me feel nostalgic. Making a 10 second video was for me, very rewarding and satisfying.
I'm born in a year 2000. When UA-cam was created in a year 2005, I didn't pay that much attention to it. But I remember when my big brother showed me a Lego stop motion somewhere between years 2006 and 2007 (I do not remember correctly) It was one of those typical Lego stop motions which had 009 Sound System music and blue screen with white text in the beginning. The animation was pretty rough and maybe 8 FPS. (To think about that video today, there is NOTHING so nostalgic than that memory) Since those years I had always wanted to do Lego stop motions myself. Then in a year 2011 I created my channel and I have since then done Lego stop motion animations. It's something that I'd never want to quit.
You're only 2 years older than my son, I remember watching LEGO stop motion videos back then too (I was just older, lol). Normally I don't click on commenters channels, since their comments always sound like shameless self promotion. Yours however, sounds more like you simply take pride in what you do, and after watching several of your videos, you should! You've done a fantastic job of them, keep it up! I'll go back and watch the rest as I have time 😁
that's touching but you say "I'm born in a year 2000" instead of "I was born in 2000" same with "when UA-cam was created in a year 2005" should be "When UA-cam was created in the year 2005" then with "Then in a year 2011" should be "then in the year 2011" sorry if you think that is mean or whatever but i just had to correct it.
I was born in 2000 too, but I originally watched mario ytps and lets plays, I think I was like 7 when I first found youtube, heck there's a mario video with mario and toads singing bohemian rhapsody that I watched probably a decade ago, I haev yet to find it again, and now I'm 18, man your childhood just flys by
Lego fans have it good these days. When I was a kid in the late 90s/2000s there was almost nothing in lego movies. Now there is a plethora of excellent lego content. I wish I had all this amazing lego media when I was a kid
Stop motion would actually most likely be a lot faster than CG. With stop motion all you have to do is movie around pieces at 24 images per second of video. With CGI, you have to CREATE 24 images per second of video. Actual lego pieces already have dings, dents, and various textures to them. With CGI all of the fine detail has to be created. I feel like animation would take much longer than traditional stop-motion.
Stop motion takes an insane amount of set up and skill. There also aren't that many people in the world who can do it well. If it were faster (cheaper) to do it any other way, they would have.
Matt Bothell but after you make the stop motion you would have to go through digital effect and after effects. Which does take a very long time especially with the talking.

As someone who spent a good piece of childhood watching fan-made brickfilms and even tried to make one himself (it's hard af) I am truly grateful for Vox to cover this topic. It feels like these millions of photos combined into thousands of brickfilms made by hundreds of ambitious creators were finally acknowledged.
nope, it was based on a real theme. basically, a 4+ theme meant to be a bridge between Duplo and regular System. big figs you can't take apart and all buildings and vehicles were big junks that plugged together with built-in pegs. fun fact: the minifigure of harry potter's hagrid the Half Giant was based on these jack stone figs.
5:25 this is such a great case-study for how derivative works ought to be treated under copyright/trademark law. A fan makes a derivative work and Lego has the ability to shut it down. Meanwhile, Lego makes a work that's highly derivative of what those very fans make and everything's fine and people even seem to think "wow, it's so cool that they made shoutouts to all the fans in the form of deriving (or even using verbatim) their art!" Anyway, it sounds like Lego came around pretty quickly. But not every company does, and maybe the law ought to be structured so that both individuals and companies are always treated equally when it comes to derivatives, by code.
I concur, however I think that parts of why the companies do things like that is that they sometimes have to. As them not doing anything or even allowing when people do stuff like this or the "Classic World of Warcraft" servers could (to my understanding, as a layperson) very well lose them at least parts of the things that protect their Intellectual property. Meaning that if they don't do anything now that could be used against them when they try to use the IP laws against someone who E.G. does something similar but more commercial (As in: If they don't stop Fleay, Warner Bros could potentially make the Lego movie and use Fleay as a precedence in court).
my big issue with that is that most companies out there tend to lose money due to these "fan art" and that "fan art" is using their copyrighted characters or trademarked products such as the lego block. and thats why its illegal, they are making money off somebody elses characters which is still intellectual property of the "lego company" i dont think lego should deny these people that put so much time into this art, but instead promote it and make both parties money. as lego has a huge marketing division im sure this wouldnt be an issue, the content creator would have to sign over 50% of the royalties though. making it a collaboration product as appose to just being a lego product. they have to do this every time they make a movie anyways, just with the film company. but this could make them be able to release more content, in a shorter amount of time, and possibly give more people the chance to get heard out there. sure you can make a youtube channel.... but not EVERYBODY watches youtube.
As the co-designer and programmer of the 3D renderer "glimpse" used on this film, thank you. This is a wonderful way to show people the work we did on this film, and how much love and effort went into it.
When I was 9-10 (maybe 2010 or so) I went to my adopted uncle's lake house and with her daughter we made silly little stop motion stories during rainy days. I came away from that making silly movies with a small camera and then working with my dad on adding sound effects. Those were the good ol' days :D. Maybe I'll upload some of them sometime to my channel.
Awesome documentary - as a lego stop motion animator who's moved into digital animation, I try to hold to the same rules of keeping within the movements that a minifigure can actually make. It made the LEGO Movie very appealing to me back in 2014 that they used that technique!
I need help from anyone here, for years I've been looking for a very special brickfilm but I just can't find it. It deals with a minifigure who was once homeless and was given money, in turn he becomes wealthy and to return the favor he builds a restaurant named "Inexpensive Cuisine". It's a really nice and touching video, it plays classical music and it's just really nice. If ANYONE knows what this video is called please let me know, I've been looking since 2009 I think.
Could either of these be the correct ones facebook.com/natemancini/videos/vb.508282784/162258162784/?type=2&theater facebook.com/natemancini/videos/39740402784/
I actually have a Jack Stone set lying around, specifically 4618 (I had to look up "Jack Stone lego sets" until i recognized one, cause there's no way i actually remembered) something my mom bought for me when i was.. probably 4 years old, since these sets were 4+, i had no idea it was based on a movie.

I created a stop motion animation back in 1989 with my old lego sets with my dad, we created the Keaton batmobile with batman climbing out of it. Still have the VHS tape somewhere.
It was easy to tell it was animated because of how the arms moved. They would leave the socket constantly and they would move in weird ways. But they didn't bend, but you could just tell
I'm kind of sad that I dropped Lego in favor of gaming. I remember as a little kid I used to be so enchanted with Lego, how they stood out like a "shining city upon a hill" in the toy industry. It's reasons like the ones in the video, how they recognize the importance of their fans' creations, how they give homage to them, that drove me to do a presentation on Ole Kirk Christiansen (Lego's founder) as a show of my absolute appreciation for everything that Lego does. Lego has been - from its conception - a beautiful testament to the impact a company can have on its fans.
I made my first Lego animation back in 1997, I should really try to dig out the original video files. There's a VHS copy somewhere, I think. Sadly lots of my original stuff was lost in 2003 when BrickFilms had a major server crash; stupidly back then (as a teenager) I didn't realise how important backups were!

SunnyVanila I would watch them on Comcast, and at the age I was at, never really understood, and respected the amount of time and dedication
2001 Lego Animation Characters don't even look like Lego People.
i have the guy in the grey with the hat and the jack stone guy. never knew what that was until now
nope, it was based on a real theme. basically, a 4+ theme meant to be a bridge between Duplo and regular System. big figs you can't take apart and all buildings and vehicles were big junks that plugged together with built-in pegs.
fun fact: the minifigure of harry potter's hagrid the Half Giant was based on these jack stone figs.
Foxesppl that's what Lego figures looked like back then
Foxesppl they legit look just like a knockoff brand my little brother has
Foxesppl it is the old design for legos I have one and it used to be my sisters
Anyone remember watching ForestFire101 in early youtube and all his raunchy lego movies?
Brokeguy 808 yo, real talk, his batman vids, those I lived
I don't remember them being raunchy
I can’t believe how long ago that movie came out! 😂
7 years ago... :
And now, the LEGO Movie has turned ten.
5:25 this is such a great case-study for how derivative works ought to be treated under copyright/trademark law. A fan makes a derivative work and Lego has the ability to shut it down. Meanwhile, Lego makes a work that's highly derivative of what those very fans make and everything's fine and people even seem to think "wow, it's so cool that they made shoutouts to all the fans in the form of deriving (or even using verbatim) their art!"
Anyway, it sounds like Lego came around pretty quickly.
Meaning that if they don't do anything now that could be used against them when they try to use the IP laws against someone who E.G. does something similar but more commercial (As in: If they don't stop Fleay, Warner Bros could potentially make the Lego movie and use Fleay as a precedence in court).
wallacoloo ui
my big issue with that is that most companies out there tend to lose money due to these "fan art" and that "fan art" is using their copyrighted characters or trademarked products such as the lego block. and thats why its illegal, they are making money off somebody elses characters which is still intellectual property of the "lego company" i dont think lego should deny these people that put so much time into this art, but instead promote it and make both parties money. as lego has a huge marketing division im sure this wouldnt be an issue, the content creator would have to sign over 50% of the royalties though. making it a collaboration product as appose to just being a lego product.
they have to do this every time they make a movie anyways, just with the film company. but this could make them be able to release more content, in a shorter amount of time, and possibly give more people the chance to get heard out there.
sure you can make a youtube channel.... but not EVERYBODY watches youtube.

Fun fact: Lego stands for “leg godt” which mean play well or have fun
@You Fool I You
Nope its a danish sentence
Yes it definitely means "play well/good) but nothing near "Have fun" that would be "Ha' det sjovt"
@@anders9646 Well you Can tell someone to “leg godt” (even though that would Sound unnatural) but Yesh that was a little bit of a reach
@Just A User I think it does mean “to build” just in another language.
@where is season 2 actually the word “lego” itself does mean “I can build”
I remember messing around on LDD when I was younger, back when the Lego Message Boards were still up.

As the co-designer and programmer of the 3D renderer "glimpse" used on this film, thank you. This is a wonderful way to show people the work we did on this film, and how much love and effort went into it.
This is very well produced and pretty damn interesting video.
Good stuff Vox (and crew).

Just your everyday Heretic cleanser great idea.
OpticsVision Id love to see!

I'm pretty sure it's the other way around.

Oh hey, I think I contacted you about those not too long ago. I hope to see them!
You did indeed :) Still working on it
