I haven't seen this movie since I was four years old when it randomly came on the Disney Channel. I wonder how 4-year-old me would feel if he knew the next time I saw it would be 18 years later via Jarvis cosplaying the house in a "UA-cam" thumbnail.

Perhaps mentally scarred?

Should’ve been called ‘Bens dad refuses to care for his own two children for an hour and a half’
More like “bens dad acts like a literal child and Ben has to be the adult for an hour and a half”
For the love of God Mr. Cooper, at least get these kids a nanny, you’ve probably got the money for one.
Isn't that the premise of like 95% of all 90s comedy movies involving a family of any kind? So while this movie might stand out for child neglect now, having that as a title back when it was released, would not have helped it stand out from movies of the same genre at all.
Okay, just gloss over the fact that while she was turning herself into a tornado ready to put on the moniker of Murder House, she was singing the lullaby that their dead mom used to sing to them. That was the creepiest part of that whole scene and really brought it into black mirror territory.
i think about this scene unnecessarily often
YEAH that part freaked my out for years lmao
LEGIT!!
Omg yes!!! So disturbing.... yet I watched this like 20 times
even when i was a kid i found that part very unsettling lmfao
She probably wants to be on time because she actually seems to have a good social life and like school. But she’s a child so it’s up to those around her to get her places on time, and they fail her.
Oh god, why is she so relatable.
@@kiralonely1307 SAME god getting my mother anywhere on time back when I lived with her was so hard. She was late for my own graduation dinner. I left with my family _without_ her because I had to be at the stadium for graduation earlier than she did to watch it so she wasn't ready in time despite my reminding her that we have a schedule to keep and I was incredibly annoyed about it.
@@roselover411 With my mom, it's always either I'm a little slow cause I have ADHD, so I'm a little behind schedule but I'm doing my best to catch up, usually speeding through doing things, but I also have OCD and have to periodically pause to double check I have everything, partially also due to the forgetfulness I get from my ADHD. She sees that as super frustrating.
It's either that or she's behind because she zoned out or is busy reading and it takes her forever to pull herself out of it, which I understand, but sometimes she's having a conversation and puts off leaving to finish it, or puts things on hold to finish a video or something and then when I'm late or slow, she complains I don't value her time enough. It's so frustrating. Like, I am really trying, dude. But if I get aggravated at her when she's slow, she immediately pulls a "you're slow all the time" or "I was BUSY" or some shit as an excuse. She ALWAYS has to be right, good, and the hero in the situation. It's really frustrating at times.
She's had lectures about me not respecting her time enough like 20 times in the last 2 years, while having such a tendency to be late that she jokes she's on "Bryant time" which is my stepdad's last name, and now hers, which Bryant time was a joke before they got married or anything because he's often late to things and usually by the same amount each time. Like he's in his own timezone.
It's to the point that when she says she'll pick me up at one, for example, I generally tell my grandma she'll be here at two. Like, it's that common. But no. *I'm* not respecting *her* time, and she's allowed to be slow and late when I have things on a very tight schedule. *She's* allowed to complain, but if I *dare* to, then it's so hypocritical.
@@kiralonely1307 I did the same thing with visiting my nana. I started telling mom we were meeting at 1 even though we were really meeting at 2 because it was a *surprise* if she ever turned up earlier than an hour late. Nowadays her boyfriend doesn't let that happen. He's got her on a time table and he will leave at the right time to arrive wherever he's supposed to be. Granted, I don't LIKE her boyfriend, but at least her punctuality has greatly improved.
The fact that this poor child is turned into a parent because his father is neglectful and they didn't acknowledge that it's bad because he shouldn't be a parent because he's a child and his father is neglectful but its bad because he doesn't have a mother and therefore as the eldest child he must be the parent
Uhhhhh. Sentence structure 🤙
i think my brain has melted reading this
yeah I love that the dad didn't bother stepping up after his wife died because I guess taking care of your kids is a female thing
@@kaskaskasit's weird tho bc like, they made ben the main caretaker. So it's not like men in their world can't be nurturing, their dad is just neglectful
Imagine if when Ben's dad first walked in, the house went 'beep boop this man is trash' and just absorbed him into the floor
💀
bruh
XD
Image the dad “Welp, I guess I’ll die now”
I read this before watching the videos oh my lord-
I love how the dad says he can't do his daughters hair because he isn't a woman yet his teenage son is literally a stay at home mom
One thing that I noticed while watching it was that it was said at one point that Pat respects your privacy and can’t look into bathrooms, then at the end when they’re making a plan to break out of the house, the kid (can’t remember the name) writes the email to the scientist while hiding in the tub. Very nice consistency 👍
I agree that it's nice consistancy but I thought that privacy protocols would have been thrown out with the safety protocol

honestly the scariest part of smarthouse is in the very end. in that last breakfast scene it's revealed that they restored pat to like, factory settings or whatever and then shut her down for breakfast. and then angie's pancakes have chocolate chips in them. and they're like "*i* didn't put those in there! what?? then *who did*???" and on a tiny screen ben sees pat's human face wink at him.
this is supposed to be very charming and a nice thing to end the movie on, as if the house wasn't painstakingly reset from an abusive, authoritarian nightmare only to *turn itself back on*.

Don't we?
I don't know, the newspaper people still fling the paper at us every day even after we've cancelled payments
Based off your description, I think this movie is based off a few sci fi short stories. The first is "MUM", which is about a smart house that takes over the life of the lady who programmed it. The second is "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury, about a smart home going through the motions after the family who lived there is killed by a nuclear blast. Fun facts.
We read "There Will Come Soft Rains" in school and I absolutely adored it, the concept is actually so eerie lol

@@emaliepaulin8877 thats because DSL was just barley catching on and broadband was still a good few years away when this movie came out. Dialup was the fastest for internet at the time.
@@michealpersicko9531 yeah but the point is if they're going for a "house of the future" and dreaming up tech advancements, you'd think they'd make it futuristic and past where they were at the time. like, it's pretty integral to the whole smart house thing. but now you can see some of the flaws with the clunky tech being visibly dated while other things were more thought out (like the bedroom walls).
that said, it kind of makes sense. it was relatable for that time and most kids watching it wouldn't think twice about it.

Fun fact! The reason a ton of disney movies have missing moms is because of Walt Disney's lose of his mother. She died of carbon dioxide poisoning in the house he bought his parents so he blamed himself.
love that you said "fun fact!" xD
Wasn’t it both his parents?
Also as far as I’ve heard, it was actually because it’s just easier as storytelling goes, especially in animated form, to cut down on any unnecessary characters. Why design a model for, animate fully, and hire a voice actor for BOTH parents when just one parent can accomplish the same thing and add some tragic backstory as flavor
Youre EXTREMLEY disrespectful and flippant when it comes to death.

I can't believe Ben downloaded her with sexism v_v
I totally agree it’s messed up beyond belief, I see your point there. In a way, Ben was being influenced by his fathers views on gender roles so it’s completely believable in the sense that his character would believably do the thing. Ben’s dad raised him with his own ideals in mind like parents typically do. And who knows if Ben’s mother followed these gender stereotypes given that she married a man like him. Also, her and Ben clearly had some sort of close relationship meaning she was present enough to influence her son with her behavior while she was alive. Still, the movie was completely messed up. It was an original idea that could have made some interesting observations on stereotyping these two genders and their roles but instead was a train wreck of nightmare fuel & s*xism.
Pfft! _Women._ Am I right, fellas??
Dang it! That hurts so much.
To be fair tho, he literally programmed her with what old sitcoms with tradwives to teach her what a “real mother” does and it ends up backfiring on him. Plus I think the house becoming more sentient and overprotective of Ben as if it were his mother isn’t that sexist imo, it’s really for the story’s “don’t overly rely on technology” and “you can’t replace family with technology” message. Idk just my interpretation

Fun fact, computers cannot generate a true random number on their own.
Neither can humans.

If u think about it, nothing is truly random
they generate numbers where the pattern is so complex they are observed as random which is good enough

Jarvis' rage at how incompetent the dad was at doing Angie's hair is gonna fuel me for weeks
My mom said if I could get 3k likes on my newest video she’ll buy me a professional setup so I could upgrade my content. Please please all I ask is for a like. Please and thank you 🚂 also drop a subscribe!!! Love you and hope you have

Yana Stanimirova Ikr, the nerve of them! Also, their name is controversial at best
I can’t believe the zucc has a whole app just to talk to you
it just occurred to me that maybe this logging into the internet through the phone thing is the reason my mom still to this day is convinced that when her phone reception is bad it's because someone in the house is using the wifi
I think Jarvis is single handedly attempting to bring Community back
I started rewatching bc their pod lol

25:06 I also got scarred by world wars when I learned about them…
18:16 How can they be rich enough to keep their original house on hold while they live in the new one?
The new one is free. I’m pretty sure the other house is fully paid off. And since they only pay utilities and property tax, it’s probably so if they’re only paying utilities for both houses but not using the utilities in the older house. It’s really cheap
I missed most of the Disney channel movies as a kid, but I probably would've found it sooooooo cool... But as an adult? The concept of a house that can shame me for eating too much sugar is my nightmare
GOD that's literally me
From the scanner part I was like oh hell no. A house that's gonna read out my weight and body fat ratio? Nope
The movie was terrifying to me as a kid, but as an adult it's even more terrifying
Art imitating life.
Or in this case...
life imitating art.🤔
This movie gave me nightmares that I was on my paper route and got grabbed by the robo-arm and then, I assume, died. That movie was so traumatizing that I remember that nightmare I had about it when I was FIVE. FIVE!! (Sorry if this is badly worded, my brain just doesn't want to work sometimes)
666 likes. nice!
Peggy Bundy as a homemaking house? what's next, Richard Nixion as a lie detector test?
That's actually pretty accurate to the original skateboards. The symmetrical dual-lip tongue-depressor design was made to accommodate tricks. Same with "marbles", hard polyurethane wheels. They used to use big urethane wheels like longboards use now.
The fact that you had to explain what dial-up is makes me feel really old.
Right? I was like 7 when I first watched this movie 😂
It gets worse, the other day I had to explain what an RCA cable is to someone who had never seen one
why is the "strawberry milkshake" blue????? I'd be a little freakin concerned if i asked for a milkshake and it was the wrong color And texture
I was wondering that also.
Plot twist: it contains the blue goo from tgwdlm because wiggly and the apotheosis joined forces and wiggly snuck the goo in
I always thought it was the color of the glass cause when it spilled it was pink
It was the glass. When she spilled it, the glass was blue.
More concerning than the color as the consistency. That smoothie was definitely pepto bismol ammiright
Now whenever my roommates ask me to do literally anything around the (dumb) house, I simply repeat "Women are born to serve and also bad". I have rewatched this video like 10 times and I love it its so quotable!!!!
17:19 the food is stored in the balls, duh!
Theres 2 types of people
One is brutalmoose- "Oh hey guys this movie existed, a disney channel classic, and its pretty cool"
The other is Jarvis- "this is the scariest horror movie"
People who don't work in IT vs. Those who do.
To be fair, Ian's mildly insane.

Okay this show just reminds me of that story "The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury. Anyone read it in English class? It's basically a smart house, and then there's this nursery that has like cgi moving walls and sound. Skipping some stuff, the parents decide that the nursery is a bad influence on their kids so attempt to shut it off. The children, in fear of losing the nursery and the smart home altogether, lock the parents in the nursery with the veldt scene (like a savanna or grassland basically), as per the title.
Turns out the nursery crosses into real life and the parents are brutally devoured by the lions of the veldt (akin to the zebra the lions were eating earlier in the story).
Ray Bradbury is a great author.
no but i read his other story about a smart house it was kinda fucked up
it was called "there will be soft rains"
Omg I was looking for this story the longest time!! THIS IS IT, THANK YOU FOR COMMENTING THIS!
I read both, amazing stories
Omg this comment just caused a deep memory to resurface wow

Even with the safety precautions, the house still had the ability to strike residents with lightning, and make an uncomfortable few of decisions to keep people in
