I can't see really a benefit, because gradient map does the exact same thing and you don't have to do channel selection. Maybe, by splitting by highlights and shadows, you have more control over the color, i don't know. I find the gradient map method more simple and effective ...
I guess the key here is "gradiant" map while over here we have two separate colors. And of course you can choose the channel which looks better, cause gradient map use your original black and white photo, less contrast, just not as good. Gradient map maybe quick but cheap method
@@AndrewKabaliuk In gradient maps you can adjust the smoothness slider, which will give more or less contrast but I think you can achieve the same result. It's a matter trying them both and see what happens. It's just another method you can use.
@@BrunoTigerFx I think you have more clearly defined 'highlights' and 'shadows' here vs gradient map. I mean, there has to be a reason for doing this right? Although this method isn't difficult either. It's pretty damn easy.
Just my opinion: I don't see an advantage over gradient maps. This method seems more work, is less flexible (gradient maps work with monotone, duotone, tritone, etc.), and also somewhat destructive (because you have to copy parts of the image into the mask).
Why have you removed the purchase option from your website for tutorials? The subscription format doesn't work for me. I would like to hear the explanation from Aaron. I have purchased several tutorials in the past and never shared a single one.
