When I first heard there was a guitar player calling himself "Bill Strings" I thought, "That is pretty arrogant, he better be really good to call himself that". Well..... Name derserved!
My dad learned guitar, and although he never really became proficient at it, he taught me how to play. I’ve become somewhat more proficient than my dad, but have never gotten really good. I introduced my son to guitar several years ago, and he learned to play about as well as I do. Mostly strumming folk and bluegrass. Then about six months ago, my son started focusing on bluegrass, Doc Watson, Tony Rice, etc., and he stumbled on Billy Strings Dust in a Baggy. He was over yesterday so we could work on his car and his motorcycle. After we got done he pulled out my guitar and started jamming on Brown’s Ferry Blues, and danged if he hasn’t just about got it down! I was amazed at how well he’s developed his speed and precision. Not as good as Billy does in the video, but he’s getting close. Probably a few more weeks of practice and he’ll have it nailed. I’ve told my son a number of times how I wish my dad was still alive to see him play. His pap would’ve been bowled over seeing his grandson playing the songs my dad loved with such proficiency, not to mention seeing a young feller (22 years old) appreciate the songs my dad raised me on. Talking about gratifying!
Billy has came straight out and said that Doc and his own father were his biggest influences learning the guitar. You can really hear that in Billy's playing, I hear Doc's style all through his picking.
One thing I really love about Billy Strings is just how humble he really is. He certainly remembers his roots and is so wonderful with his fans and other musicians. Knowing how guitar music had influenced his life so much and in such a positive way, Billy recently bought each and every current student from his old school a guitar in the hopes that the guitar would influence their lives in a positive manner also. Billy and his band are taking Bluegrass and country to a new level, and I truly believe that one day, Billie Strings will belong to the ages with Doc Watson
It only goes to show that humility is a great way to show your affection for whatever you love, be it music or something else in life, not really concerned about being a Great Music Star, but just enjoying and playing/singing, doing what you really love ❤ , !!!!!
In all fariness, he is not signing during the breaks :) Singing while strumming cleanly most players manage. I'm a big fan of Billy Strings I think he's awesome, a great guitarist and singer.
@@nickeninja You are correct, I was referring to his right hand strumming during the vocals. He never missed a string or rang out bad notes that I could hear. Yea he is incredible, have a great day.
Do not underestimate the amount of time he put into guitar playing. Yes he's got talent, but it would be a shame to put all the efforts the made to get there on the behalf of so-called "talent". He surely spends most of his day playing guitar!
Make sure kids get to listen to it young. They'll learn the new stuff, I think it's crap, but my Mom thought what I listen to is crap, but they will learn to appreciate a wide range of talent.
Билли отличный продолжатель жанра и славный сын своего народа! Америка должна гордиться Билли! Billy is an excellent successor of the genre and a glorious son of his people! America should be proud of Billy! From Russia with love!
RIP the Delmore Bros (Alton and Raybon) writers of this tune. My fave verse? "Down in jail with my back to the wall" "Red headed woman caused it all" "Got those Browns Ferry blues" The Louvin Bros (both deceased) covered most of their songs cept "Sand Mountain Blues" I loved the days of country brother acts. Delmores, Blue Sky Bros, Jim & Jesse, Stanleys and the York Bros to mention only a few.
I listen to a lot of bluegrass and especially Grateful Dead. When Billy Strings kept showing up as suggested viewing I finally clicked on. Amazed at his talent level. I can’t believe I didn’t know about him.
Well, I clicked this by accident with this blasted mouse that has a mind of it's own and I cussed but God damn young man! It is so satisfying to see a man that knows his instrument! You walkin' all over the neck of that guitar like that took this old man right back to West Virginia where I grew listening to that kind of pickin! Right satisfying! I bookmarked you! Keep it up!
Awesome stuff, right?! I came across Billy a few years ago, maybe right before you did and fell down the Billy Strings rabbit hole and haven't made it out since lol.
Thanks Billy . I searched this song because it was a childhood memory. You didn’t play the verse I remembered but that’s ok. Hope to see you again at 4qf. I’m part of the sweat crew
My grandfather and a business partner bought the Browns Ferry Farm in Limestone County, Alabama in the 1920s, and Alton Delmore farmed part of the land for him in the late 1920s or early 1930s. I guess that inspired him to write this song. The farm was right on the Tennessee River. That was before Wheeler Dam was built, and the lake took part of the farm. TVA's Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant now occupies part of the property.
I really love this s bluegrass flat picking.i believe he's the best I've ever heard.but I was very turned off by a song I partially heard him sing with. The F word in it.i immediately turned it off.it really dissapointed me.but I have gone back to listening the best Guitar picker in the world.God Bless you Billy Strings.
been watching him a while now, funny how the first video I seen of his ,Dust in a Baggie, there was a guy mocking him and the music in the back ground(I can't unsee) , Billy is so dam good..that guy witnessed greatness and didn't even have a thought.
By far best new guitar picker around!!!!! I saw him doing a cameo guest appearance at a String Cheese Incident show and he made bill nershi look like an amateur guy is straight fire
Somewhere up in bluegrass heaven, Doc Watson is smiling 😊
exactly
When I first heard there was a guitar player calling himself "Bill Strings" I thought, "That is pretty arrogant, he better be really good to call himself that". Well..... Name derserved!
Thomas Cahill his grand mother gave him that name
Billy and Molly Tuttle are doing for bluegrass what Doc and Merle Watson did long ago.
That young man could pretty much call himself anything he wanted! He makes it look so, so easy.
@@daf827 Very true! Those 2 (among others) are carrying on the tradition.

There is a huge difference in improvising licks like billy does, and trying to play like someone else
Hell yeah man
@@LowdownBoy yea hell yea man
Great family story. I hope your son is still playing.

Thank you! He’s still playing, and getting even better.
It's impossible to overstate the influence of Doc Watson on generations of guitarists.
delmore brothers too, this was one of their tunes.. Delmores influenced Doc, Don Reno, Merl travis, and many other pioneer guitarists .

Can't forget Mr Guitar, Chet Atkins

I love how in a year everyone is gonna be talking about how great Billy Strings is and we will all just be like... Oh we know. We know.
lol yeah, I'm that newbie. I could have been listening to this three years ago... 😢
tired of hard rock, heavy metal etc ... this music makes us live again.
Mo Geof amen.
So true. Saved bluegrass.
It's time
Billy has the Woody Guthrie voice and the Doc Watson's guitar style. What a mix!

Well said! That humility comes from genuine love of the musical tradition, and gratitude for their gifts. Doc and Billy were both cut from that cloth.
It only goes to show that humility is a great way to show your affection for whatever you love, be it music or something else in life, not really concerned about being a Great Music Star, but just enjoying and playing/singing, doing what you really love ❤ , !!!!!
This is on such another level you can't name another guitarist out there who can play this clean while he is singing.

Doc Watson can come pretty close
There are people who play guitar as an acquired skill, and there are people like Billy Strings who play like they are just born to play guitar.
