    Hi Gary from Niagara waiting on the eclipse...lol. Do you not up-pot to soil for seed starts? Did I understand right that they just stay in the seed starting mix with light fertilizing until they go outside? This is my 3rd year but think I'm making it a lot more complicated than it needs to be 😂

    Hi, Gary! I'm just wondering why you've already started your tomatoes if you're not transplanting until May? I grow them both in and outside the high tunnel. I usually start them in January, and plant them in the high tunnel in March. My last frost date was April 2nd. I noticed even the tomatoes in the tunnel do not put on growth until about late April or May and they don't produce earlier than ones I planted outside or even later outside. I plan to start mine February 15. I'm tired of potting up, and I had planned to keep the plants in the smaller 6 packs. Thanks for explaining the root situation in smaller trays! I guess I'll use the larger 6 packs.

      Great question. These are video props so people can watch and learn before its time to start. Some of the peppers are going into a greenhouse for growing. So officially I would start for a while.

    What you have said here is good information BUT you didn't talk about growing in containers that can warm up much sooner. Last year I had plants in containers in March ---- if I was getting frost at night I put them in the garage then back out in the morning when the sun was shinning strong, it worked out well had tomatoes by July.

      @burntorangehorn 5 місяців тому

      I've done that in the past, but this year I'm using "solar mulch" to warm the soil early, then planting out early and just using row covers to trap heat if there's a frost or cold night.

      Sounds good lets us know how it all works.😁@@burntorangehorn

      True but the timing principle is the same. You would take that into consideration when the soil temp warms in the container but early you put them out, the more you have to watch frosts.

    Gary do you need to transition all seed starts over a 7 day period or just the warm weather ones like tomato and pepper plants?

      All plants. Anything that isn't used to the sun's UV Rays.

    I was wondering would your prop plants thrive if you continued to grow them inside until it was warm enough to put outside or would they be too big? And I was wondering do you have any tips on seed starting flowers or frost tolerant veggies indoors and when you should start those? Like peas beans leaf vegetables etc?

    • @mowerds33
      @mowerds33 5 місяців тому +1

      I start my kale 8 weeks before my last frost date, and transplant them outside a month before my last frost date.
      The flower seeds should say on the packet, for example most snapdragons say start indoors 10-12 weeks before your last frost date.

    • @mowerds33
      @mowerds33 5 місяців тому +1

      I don't start beans and peas inside, they grow too quickly so there isn't much benefit.

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  5 місяців тому +2

      I would have to pot them up so the root system matched the upper growth. Big plants and small roots make for transplant issues. I have lots of videos on both some here and surely on my other channel The Rusted Garden.
