Hey Gary, just coming out of our summer, we had HEAPS of basil in the garden. I've taken cuttings to root and hopefully keep them alive through the winter. We don't get snow and they'll be inside during the nights so fingers crossed!!!

I’ve learned that I have to put the plants outside in the shade for the first couple days. I’ve burnt plants in direct sunlight in an hour.
It does happen fast depending on the intensity of the sun.

I have shelves in front of a couple south facing windows I use for my seed starting, but I also use a set of fluorescent lights on cloudy days and for 4-5 hours in the evenings even on sunny days.
If it works stick with it for sure.

Thank you Gary, watching a lot of seed starting videos. Not sure what I’m doing if it’s wrong. I get a crust layer at the top of the cells. When sitting in watering tray it still won’t change that very top layer. I’ve did some surgical cultivation trying to keep top soft and absorbable.
Some starting mix brands (or improperly mixed home recipes) don’t include a lot of perlite and vermiculite and can develop weird “strata” from compacting that makes them extra hydrophobic. I lost some superhot pepper seeds because of that. Light top watering (don’t make it a habit!) and a humidity dome will probably solve the issue if it’s anything like the one I had.
@@GiantSleepy thank you, that sounds about what I’m experiencing. I sacrificed one seed cell just so I can stick my finger in checking moisture below. I’ll try your advice 👍
Probably too much peat moss. You need more vermiculite. Hard to say without seeing it.

Question- if 4-5 germinate is it easy to split the plants and have individual plants or do they not like their roots disturbed?

Do you need to use a heat mat to germinate sooner?
Only if your house temps are under 60F. They do help for peppers. Use them for peppers and my house stays in the upper 60's.
