I switched from tandem’s control IQ to Omnipod 5 and love it! Being tubeless is amazing and the system works very well. The algorithm takes a few pods to learn you and continuously learns. I’ve never been kicked from auto mode so that was interesting to hear about. I can’t see going back to a tubed pump.

@Dawn B 222 thanks same to you. I'm so undecided because we keep our pumps for years before we can change them.. Tandem has been good to me, so we shall see my final choice. Still have a year and researching now. I moved several jobs to get out from United Healthcare, which wouldn't allow Tandem pumps. Years later, I got the Tandem. I fought for it hard to let go.

I had an Omnipod and really loved the ease of it and that it was tubeless, but the cannula is a 'one size fits all' type. It is integrated into the pod, so if you don't get on with that cannula, then you need to find another pump. Sadly, I found that the cannula in the Omnipod wasn't dispersing the insulin very well in my body. I was moved over to the Medtronic pump with a steel needle infusion. This has really helped control my levels.
I really do miss the ease of the Omnipod and the fact that it's tubeless. It's only to cannula options that caused me to change over to Medtronic.

This is definitely pretty cool, but I still prefer using the Dash with DIY Loop. With 3.0 you can connect directly to your iPhone. Until Omnipod 5 gives me direct connection to my iPhone without having to carry around an additional device, I just don't want to make the switch. But Loop 3.0 is AMAZING.

I'm doing the 30-day trial of the omnipod 5 and I like the tubeless feature but not a fan of the large PDM. I have an iPhone and since it's not compatible with the omnipod, I have to carry around both the iPhone and the PDM which, for me, is a hassle. I've been on the t-slim for many years and will continue to use that pump.

Hey Danica, as an older person nearing the big five oh I was hoping maybe you could incorporate some more simplified language specifically around the insluin dosage. You say bolus and I've never heard that until I started watching you and I have to google it often to remind myself of what it is. Maybe saying something like 'when you bolus for meal time' would help to contextualize it. Or similarly for long acting saying 'basal long acting'. I dunno, just a thought.

I switched to the 5 from the Eros almost a year ago. I detest it. The algorithm it uses to determine your basal rate stinks, as all it does it take your total insulin use in a day, and divides it by two. That's your basal. But, for those of us who do a lower-carb, therefore lower bolus, diet, the 5 never gives enough basal. I will be switching to the DASH sometime soon. I was looping with the EROS, and my A1C was 5.6, so manual pumps can be used as successfully as the 5. Just putting this here in case some folks are having similar issues with the 5. No one therapy works perfectly for everyone.

I hate algorithms !!!!!!! My son started with the Medtronic 670g. It fought him like crazy and his diabetes was definitely worse wearing that. We were so discouraged that we paid out of pocket to get a Tandem pump since insurance would not allow us another pump for 4 years. If you gave yourself correction insulin the 670 would subtract background insulin. If you took a shot so it didn't know, it would decrease future basal rates because it thinks the shot the pump doesn't know about means the patient is responding to the insulin the pump does know about more strongly so it readjust what it thinks you need for the future. It was way too much the boss. Before it develops information about the patient, it was better. The longer you wear it, the more it takes over. Hated it. That is why we did not go with Control IQ with Tandem. We stuck with basal IQ. My son hates all the alarms . It literally goes off anywhere from 30-50 times a day/night. It tells you and reminds you about everything multiple times. Wish that were possible to turn off.

Could not agree with you more. The guardian sensor was a nightmare and I could never focus on work, studies etc throughout the day and never once got a good night’s rest when wearing it. The target for auto mode was way too high, I hate that I couldn’t fix the sugars myself, and the sensors were not at all accurate. In manual mode, the 670g works well for me but I haven’t been on closed loop for years. I have been using the libre 3 cgm for about a year now and I absolutely love the size, its accuracy (best on the market), better pricing, and every 1 minute updates. Just has no closed loop options yet in the U.S. yet 😢. I’m rambling at this point but I’ve had a similar experience as your son and it sucks.
